Why is banning the coverage of sugary junk foods for EBT/SNAP parasites a controversial issue?
I wasn't sure if this was appropriate for the Brain Worm dude thread. I have seen some meltdowns regarding this "govern
Men are 2nd class citizens in modern day America
Higher suicide rates, less likely to graduate college, more likely to declare bankruptcy, less likely to own a home, etc......
Men are expected to pay 18 years of child support if a woman births their child, however the man has zero say in whether a woman murders their child in utero. This is a mans world? Right.....
Every time I see the username AlphaSwole, I think of the Swole Boys from Mayans M.C.
People upset about the ban think it's a targeted attack against poor people who just want to enjoy a popsicle once a week. They imagine most people on food stamps use it responsibly, OR are entitled to be irresponsible because of how much they've suffered at the hands of "latestagecapitalism" and see this as a way of clawing back some value they've bestowed to the robber barons.
People happy about the ban assume everyone on the dole is some variation of something you'd see in a video search for "EBT haul" on TikTok or Twitter.
As with any political hot topic, the reality is somewhere in the middle.
I admit I watched a bunch of those haul videos and each one was more disturbing than the last. You're a fool if you refuse to admit that one video of people showcasing abuse of the system does more harm than can be offset by showing 100 people truly benefitting from it. There are people living paycheck to paycheck above the income limits for SNAP and showing them a video of some unemployed woman with 8 kids and no man in sight taking out $2500 worth of groceries that consist mostly of things that would be illegal to sell or probably even consume in Europe is going to get them riled up. Then you have the ones where they're actively taunting video watchers up front. "I ain't finna hear anyone's negative comments on this video. You say some **** you gonna get BLOCKED. I like what I like." Proceeds to buy $500 worth of hot pockets, ice cream, and potato chips.
That's where most of the outrage comes from.
If I were God Emperor, I'd go back to handing out actual coupons for specific nutritional staples. But I've been on that bandwagon for decades, so nothing new there. It should cut down on the people who sell their EBT balance for cash, too. You gotta find someone willing to buy your coupon for beans, potatoes, and peanut butter for 50 cents on the dollar.
As with everything good in life, a few shitty people have to ruin it for the rest of us.
^^the modern Republican in a nutshell, addicted to transparently obvious online ragebait.
Oh, I know it's bad for me to have up as second-monitor fodder. I also know that some of it is literal ragebait for clicks and engagement in this highly cancerous new influencer world we live in.
But not all of it. Definitely not all of it.
You can also find posts in my history where I talk about seeing this in action personally. As I may have mentioned once or twice, I essentially live in the ghetto, and have personally witnessed people selling their EBT for cash outside the grocery store, an paying for heaping carts full of actual garbage with that telltale green EBT card.
So, no, it's not all "transparently obvious online ragebait."
It might make you feel better or even morally superior to think that I'm just a rube being sucked in by propaganda, but you live in a bubble as well.
Why use the euro example? Just about every time people here suggest the euro way conservatives here just flip right over to calling it commie. It's a constant run-around lol
We want to stay true to our euro culture! OK let's do it. Get bent you commie this is America! 😀
Eat the meat, spit out the bones.
European regulations around food, banking, privacy, etc are all pretty great from what I can tell.

sure try GDPR, click 2-3 times per site, everytime, to tell them that yes you do agree to have the ****ing cookies saved. Otherwise it's all blocked.
And they have to ask everytime, can't save the preferences because you can change your mind. All sites, everytime.
People become radical terrorists for less than that
well seems it is :

Since the early 20th century, the federal tax code has grown exponentially longer, more complex, and more unequal. Congress has added hundreds of credits, deductions, preferences, and other loopholes that provide trillions of dollars in subsidies to politically favored industries and move millions of Americans entirely off the tax rolls. Between 1970 and 2023, the number of these tax expenditures—so-called because they can function in ways economically similar to direct spending programs—increased from 53 to 205.
costing over 1 trillion annually .
ever heard of offshoring, tax heaven ,etc ?
And even if it was slightly lower, paying 45% from 90% tax rate due to loophole is far greater then paying 15-20% from a 40% tax rates or w.e it is today .
if those charts doesnt speak to you i dont know what else to say .

must be because they work hard and not because of tax being too low or too many loopholes....
At face value I find the argument controversial because many find sugary junk foods is delicious and people should be allowed to enjoy them.
Reading between the lines it is controversial because it isn't about people buying sugary junk foods. It's about pointing an accusing finger at a politically powerless group and using a stereotype to paint them as worthless cretins in order to score a cheap political point against another political party. Not in an effort to improve someone's diet, but merely done in order to make yourself look powerful and decisive.
Basically, you're kicking a man who is down solely to look strong and show everybody else how good you are at kicking. Which is pathetic.
If you really care about poor people's diet, then start to look at ways to make healthy food cheaper and include nutrition as subject in public education. Do this consistently, and over time things will improve. Of course, this necessitates that you actually care about people and society, so it is not something the people who tweet / post / re-tweet this crap will ever do.

Exceptionally well said!

Nobody is saying people can't enjoy a snack. These people are free to purchase junk with money they actually earn rather than on my dime.
This has nothing to do with pointing accusing fingers. It has everything to do with trying to make a healthier populace and reduce future medical costs for the general population. There is not always a secondary motive.
As for healthy food its already far cheaper than junk food. If these people have time to make "tik tok" videos on their $1000 smart phones they have the internet and the ability to read about nutrition. Even then why does one even need to read about nutrition? Broccoli, chicken, rice, oats, eggs, and the like are food. Coca cola, twinkies, chips, and the like are obviously junk.
I guess when a political party thinks that one population is so dumb they don't have the mental capacity to fill out an application for identification they also think that basic knowledge regarding nutrition is beyond their understanding.
