They still make hardcover editions of all the classics, but they're usually money grabs. "Look how aesthetically pleasing this edition is. [...].

Do you mean those gift editions you find in a lot of bookstores? They are often exceptionally poor quality. Bad paper, cheap glue binding and low quality covers. So you end up with a fragile hardcover cheaply bound with glue, which is really the worst of both worlds.

I suspect they are just meant to look good in a shelf.

I strongly disagree that Great Expectations was an awful book but that's the cool thing about books because everyone interprets things differently and that interpretation changes over the years - unless it's a really shitty book, i guess. Can I start a book thread in politics? Book discussion often get pretentious, with the argument being more about why your own taste is better. This to a greater extent than similar discussion for shows, movies, music or games.

I'm not sure why. Perhaps books are simply a bit more personal.

Over the past couple of years, I have reread quite a few "classics" that were assigned when I was in school and remembered that I liked them at the time. Most of them really didn't do it for me today. A few of them were not only bad, they were a slog to finish. Surprisingly, the two I enjoyed most were White Fang and Call of the Wild. Perhaps this says more about me than it does about the books.

Jack London is very comforting. You should read "The Sea Wolf"

Same here it's a great book. But I've been pretty much a lifelong avid reader. I actually re-read it probably ~10yrs after the initial time in school.

There are def. some authors I've skewed away from after a book or 2 though vs my standard of reading everything someone's written.

Moby Dick is great. But like a lot of long books with philosophical elements, you can't read it 15 pages at a time when you are tired or have had a few beers. You will never finish it. You have to read it in 50+ page chunks more or less every day.

The Last of the Mohicans is still my favorite classic. I read it for the first time when I was too young and it was very upsetting, which apparently carried some lasting effect because as an adult I still gravitate toward upsetting literature… No happy endings in my library.

Yeah, those were the first ones that came to mind. You can still find "regular" hardcover editions of a lot of books like Everyman's Library, anniversary editions, etc., but if you're picky about editing and translations, chances are you won't find what you're looking for. Last year I was looking for a new copy of The Human Comedy, and the only thing at the store was a mass market paperback with very small text, so I went online and that was the only paperback version available, but there was a hardcover version, and it ended up being good quality.

In other news, you think i exaggerate against the left and the left manages to systematically do far worse than what i claim and you guys consider a strawman.

In France, the left is against AC

In France, the left

So we’re just going to pretend that France’s left, perhaps the most left leaning country in the world, is applicable to the left of every other nation?

You aren’t even attempting a genuine start, here.

No, but it's what any other nation must avoid at all costs?

if french canaries start dying with horrible pain in the mine you SHOULD USE THAT TO INFORM YOUR POLITICS

So being actively against everything the french left pushed in the last 60 years becomes morally imperative in western democracy...

And *it is not random* that wokism has been inspired by the writings of... wait for it.. french radical leftist intellectuals!

Btw american college professors DO RESEMBLE french radical leftists much more than the USA do in general. Which is why colleges are such a source of problems for society

Does Italy now have AC most places? Having spent a lot of time in Southern Italy, the true literal enemy of human life was the body odor of the men. Truly a stank I’ve never encountered anywhere else.

I've been to France. Seems like a nice place. Saw no dead canaries.

Italy is slowly (italian times) moving toward AC, with the north as usual as for everything else that works being far quicker doing that (even if it's less needed).

As for why southern italian men are disgusting, i can't elaborate given the way you interpret forum rules but i do agree.

Ah there is other reason you hate people beside their political beliefs that aren’t far right ?

The North v South thing in Italy is quite marked.

It's true that Judith Butler, for one, is a dopey and semi-literate parasite on French theory.

I think there might be an element in play when you have to read some stuff that can make some books more difficult to get into for some people. Other books can definitely still be page-turners in that context though too obv.

Coming into them with no grades etc riding on it can make a big difference.

I'd already read a ton from childhood thru grad school but I think my most productive period was the ~10-15yrs right after where I was making a pretty concerted effort to fill in what I felt were any gaps--to meet my own defn. of what I considered "well-read". But I also mixed in lots of stuff that I wouldn't really put in that category too.
