President Donald Trump

I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?

So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at

Why is soccer so popular?

The speed and flow of movement, the touch and control required, the combination of ground and aerial play, the difficulty of scoring, which builds expectation, and the frequent mistakes which add to the emotional rollercoaster effect.

The fake injuries and flops makes this game unwatchable.

No, they provide an element of comedy and hissable villains.

I suppose it's because most of these countries are poor so the kids can't afford to play real sports like hockey or football.

No, we find those sports tedious. In the 1980s UK Channel 4 got the rights to show gridiron. The ratings were huge -- for the first week. After that nobody watched because they'd found out how stoppy-and-starty and grindingly unspontaneous and depressing it was. Nowhere near as good as watching clumsy builders putting a house up very slowly and encountering dull technical problems.

Lol at him reposting a meme that uses fat face JD in it.

Always thought soccer is popular because it is extremely cheap to play it, easy to play anywhere, and almost anyone can excel at it (tall, small, big, thin don’t matter) shrug.

I've always assumed it was mostly this.

I'm a sports fan, and rank soccer in the running for most boring sport. Used to play it everyday in elementary school, for exactly the reasons that it was very easy to play, got a ball and 2 goals?

Hockey is basically the same idea but much faster and more exciting.

American Football is also pretty dumb IMO, but for a different reason. Anybody not being paid big money to play is out of their mind to play it. It's just completely unsafe. Letting your kids play full contact football is questionable parenting at best.

I assume all of the trumpers are totally fine with wide open cheating at golf now lol

100% a positive thing

Probably happy to foot the $10m cost too.

I think it was Ann Coulter who years ago wrote an amusing article basically making this point.

Don't you just need a ball too for American Football?

yup and the british empire

sports were not a thing until modern times - so they were largely introduced by the brits

by far the most accessible game they had was soccer - it's simple to play, easy rules to follow and understand, can easily be played casually without refs and with a smaller set of people, requires just a ball and some empty space, and doesn't require any special training etc anyone just jump in and start playing having never played before - there's a reason why it's by far the most common game in america if you only look at youth sports despite that it largely disapears once kids are old enough to be capable to "advance" to the other sports

polo requires horses

rugby requires medical facilities

cricket requires a weekend of free time

etc etc etc

in fact since most recreation was on horseback - it's called football not because you kick the ball with your feet but rather it's a generic term for any game not played on horseback

it's football like foot soldier

Could just run around with mallets. Like those idiots that play quidditch.

ie soccer is the abbreviation of association

and soccer or "football" are just shorthand for association football

as again, football is just a generic word so it needs "association" in front of it to have any real meaning

there's a good dozen different sports all with the name football in it

and soccer was by far the most commonly used word for it for most of its history - it wasn't until soccer began to get popular in the us that the brits literally rebranded it using a new word to unamericanize it

so it's peak cuck whenever an american calls it football and says that's the real word for it

I'm always amused when articles in American media about soccer use British terms and usage in the report.

Shoo, you silly little troll.

No.

You need pads and helmets.

And you need two tall uprights for field goals.

When I was young, I played plenty of football without any of that.

yeah the mls drives me crazy

in europe, when they have names like ac/fc/real/sporting/etc it's tied to an actual history

this team started as a club 150 years ago playing other teams no different from a beer league today and from there progressed into the global behemoth it is today

so when a team has "united" in their name like Manchester United it's done to indicate that the squad is the result of a merger of two or more other teams

likewise ac stands for athletic club - meaning they were an organization that played a variety of sports - in portugal this is designated using "sporting"

having "real" in the title means they were granted special status from the king

so all those teams with prefixes, suffixes, and other acronyms have it not as part of "let's have a cool name" but rather it's a nod to their history

you know sheffield wednesday was originally a team comprised of factory workers who used their halfday on wednesday to play games and sheffield united was formed in order to give members of the sheffield united cricket club (which was called united to reflect a merger of several clubs into one) a game to play during the winter months

so those names all have historical meaning

but then in cuck city usa we launch the mls and go "we want to sound soccery" so we chose the disgusting path of blindly adopting that naming convention despite that there's no rhyme or reason behind it

22 teams use FC or some variant in their name

only 8 teams have non sycophantic names

Columbus Crew
New York Red Bulls
Portland Timbers
Colorado Rapids
LA Galaxy
New England Revolution
Philadelphia Union (sounds like its more sycophantism but union here is a nod to being the 1st capital)
San Jose Earthquakes

some teams are extra awful - using not one but two bits of nonsense

Minnesota United FC
Houston Dynamo FC
Inter Miami CF
St Louis City SC

just sad sick stuff - this is the real problem doge should have focused on canceling

Same here. But at the competitive level you need that stuff. (Unless you're playing flag football.)

Inter Miami is my favourite
