78 m people visited the US last year legally.im.sure a few dozen randomly had horror stories and that sucks for them. But we don't have to pretend there's some significant change from that this year.

Anyone staying away bc the media blows those stories up this year should be scared to drive or even leave their own house.

Or in the case of Romanians (and I'm sure Albanians, Serbs, etc.) they don't come in the first place, being denied a tourist Visa or not wanting to go thru the hassle in the first place.

As an aside, now in modern European countries, you don't hand your papers to a person. You stick your passport into a machine, it is electronically scanned, a facial recognition camera beeps and you are on your way quickly with no human intervention.

In Romania, which is not modern, once the custom guy sees your blue American passport, I don't even think they check to see if you match the picture in the passport, they can't flip it open fast enough to stamp it and say Welcome to Romania and wave you through with no questions asked.

Returning to America, they always ask how long I've been out of the country, if I purchased anything, and do I have anything to declare before waving me through.

Sometimes they ask what I did or what I was doing while out of the country. I wonder how "none of your business" would go down, but I'm a good little citizen and simple say "Tourist".

Except for changing planes in Amsterdam. I always get back roomed and patted down and my carry on searched. Twice. Once upon arrival and again on the way to the other plane. Then I get pulled out of the boarding line at the gate and swabbed for explosives/drugs and my carryon checked again.

The last time they said it was random selection but I said no, 6 out of 6 times isnt random. I now no longer switch planes in Amsterdam. Sucks because it was a pretty easy airport to navigate.

So 55 minutes longer than 5 minutes.

One time coming in through Chicago, lines were about 3 hours long. Some old lady stroked out and collapsed about 2 1/2 hours in, so they snaked the line around her and armed security guards came out and stood over her, I guess to shoot her if she suddenly recovered. Took about 25 minutes for paramedics to arrive. Welcome to America.

It is better to leave Europe through Dublin since the preclearance is there and you can land as a domestic flight.
