Wild West: Dealing with Chaos at the WSOP

Wild West: Dealing with Chaos at the WSOP

I took a few thousand off a guy at the WSOP cash. The next day I come in and he sits down, and he says hi to me, and also, he asks what we were playing, and I told him, it's 5/10/25, uncapped buy in

So, then he surprises me, and he said I hit and run yesterday, and that I'm a "Rat"

What are my options here?

I called the floor, and I told him the guy insulted me.

I was in a must move game and I went to the must move table. I won a big pot, and I was going to leave shortly after. The guy on my left, tells me, you just hit and ran (later i found out it was the guy's friend who insulted me to start the day). I was like, no I've been playing here 3 hours. I'm not hitting and running. Anyways you shouldn't judge people at the poker table, it's not good for the game.

I'm racking up and I the guy I called the floor on about 20 minutes before is screaming out "hit and run" "hit and run". Actually, I've never had anyone say this to me before. I've played a lot of poker in Vegas and people generally come and go as they please. This was a little bit wild for me!

So, I'm leaving and then this guy who I took a few thousand off the day before and he was really salty about it, calls the floor and says I went South at the other table. The floor people at WSOP tell me they are going to review the tape. This was absolute nonsense. I don't know if they checked it or not, but what I said was I want to file a complaint on this person.

I had to wait for about 30 minutes. They told me it might take 2 hours for the Boss to get there. I asked if they could speed it up because I'm concerned about this person's behavior (because he ignored the initial floor person that I called over). Then Senior floor guy comes over and he tells me he will give this guy a firm warning he can be banned if he bothers me again, and vice versa I can be banned if I bothered him.

I also wanted to know about rules if is gossiping and making up lies about me at the table when I'm not there. He had just made a wild accusation that I went South, and I can be banned for that, and he was screaming out "hit and run" etc. when I was leaving the table at the top of his lungs. Is he allowed to trash me after I leave the table to the group?

Any suggestions on how I can prevent these types of situations or how to deal this type of an individual in the live poker rooms?

Thanks!

Do you know where these players are from? In some cities or even countries this kind of toxic behavior is the norm. The best you can do is have thick skin and take the high road. You should ask how DumbosTrunks deals with it. He has a thread on PCG and these types of altercations are a daily occurrence for him but from what I gather he does hit and run and rathole and sometimes he’s the instigator of these altercations

Sounds like there is more to this story than you presented. People get upset about losing a big hand. Don't engage with them, just nod and if a response is necessary, say, "yeah, I got lucky on that hand." DO NOT CALL THE FLOOR TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THEM. Especially if you don't want to spend hours waiting to file a report.

I agree with Venice, also depending on which game variant you are playing, and how deep the player pool is, they may recognize that you may be profitable in the game that they have been making money in. If they feel you will likely stick around then making you uncomfortable is a common way (here in vegas) to discourage you from sitting in the games at that location.

Also never discount that the floor could be buddies with players and/or tipped out by certain players, a fair decision is not always possible even though it should be.

Possibly Russia or Eastern Europe. I can't place the accent.

I agree calling the floor wasn't helpful especially at this location because it's WSOP summer cash, and people are coming and going a lot.

what's PCG? Is there a link to the thread?

I was being polite. It's just after the guy blatantly insulted me by calling me a "rat" that I called the floor.

Then when i went to the must move his friend accused me of "hitting and running"

I got up, still being polite. The friend on the other table was yelling out "hit and run, hit and run, hit and run" while I as getting up.

They were probably texting back and forth while i was there after I thought about it!

Toxic situation. I think ignoring them would have been a viable option or just making light of it in this specific case.

Arguing with them just made it worse. The floor was called then the main aggressor got even more aggressive with me a couple of hours later. I had to wait about an hour to talk to the next supervisor. But I can say that they told him if he bothered me again he would be banned.

The thing that "triggered" him was after he lost the big pot when I came back 2 or 3 minutes later, he had around 3500 to 4k on the table. He had just called the floor to try and overturn the hand, but they ruled against him (he waited until showdown to call the floor) this was the 2nd big pot I took off of him in about 5 minutes.

I just said the max buy in is 2500 and he got triggered. I wanted to make sure (a) He knows the buy-in (b) he wasn't going to buy-in deeper than the cap. I was super polite. The whole table had a light vibe except for this guy to be honest.

What did the floor say when you complained about the guy? I wouldn't be surprised if he laughed about it. I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone called a rat, but I've sure been called and heard others called things far worse.

Honestly, this sounds like it was a minor thing which probably only got out of hand because you complained about it. You need to let some things roll off your back.

I would have just said something like "I had to get your money home quickly to roll around in it, but I brought it with me today, so you have a chance to win it back".

You should’ve called him a cheater for trying to sneakily buy in over the max

Yes. I'm not there for a dick measuring contest.

Thanks,

Normally yes. If I do respond it will be in a manner to tilt them even more such that they look like an @ss to the rest of the table. But even though this is ‘innocent escalation’ the floor might wind up tossing both of you.

Only time I would call the floor would be for actual threats or cases where the dealer should already have called the floor.

I wouldn’t completely ignore it, but like a few have said above, there is benefit to letting it roll off, focusing on the task at hand, and finding a spot to get that specific players money. Since I have been playing here consistently, I have realized the back and forth arguing is not as effective as a quick and quiet “please call the floor” to the dealer if it has gotten disrespectful.

Any suggestions?

You seem to run in to a lot of ass holes in the poker room.

Any chance you're the ass hole?

Being called a rat is such a mundane insult.

I'm rubber and your glue

I'm generally not going to ignore it but I wouldn't call the floor over calling me a rat, I'm not a 1940s mobster who might find this term super offensive. I'd be more likely to laugh it off or start trolling them.

Rat is short of ratholing. Would've said not really. Guy might even have been half-friendly. Calling floor is escalation.

Sit at the table a few rounds after winning big, nice gesture. Maybe win some more.

Actually, I was in for 2500, I ran it up to about 14k in about an hour. But after this guy tried to free roll me in a big pot (he challenged a call after showdown), and the game wasn't as good, I decided to leave.

I've played a lot in Vega, that was the first time anyone accused me of hitting and running. I don't like playing with angle shooters or sore losers.

Usually in Vegas, you can come and go as you please. Nobody cares. Apparently, this guy was from another country / culture, and he wanted to impose his beliefs and values on me.

Good point. In Vegas there must be a lot of people hitting and running after winning on the slots or in the pit, so they are used to it 😉

Trying to free roll you, that places the blame on him. So an *******, need to duck. Guy thinks poker is personal.
