Dealers rooting against certain players

Dealers rooting against certain players

Have you ever been at a table where a dealer is openly rooting against you or another player?

For example they shake their head when you table the nuts or act gleeful when your opponent tables the winner?

I’ve seen this happen for various reasons including:

-The dealer is friends with a player
-One of the players is an excellent tipper while the other one not so much
-The dealer has had conflict with a player
-The dealer is racist

What would you do if you encountered this? Ignore, call it out to the table, report to the floor, stop tipping, etc.?

Not go to that room if they didn't like me

I feel like if you see it *that* often...... maybe it's you?

I'd probably do a combo of lower my tips (maybe stop) and report to the floor. Don't care to call it out. If dealer is that much of an ******* that they thinking that's acceptable, that's no point in trying to reason with them.

In the past 5 years I’ve seen 3 dealers who root for or against players. They’re repeat offenders and it’s not only against me. One of them was an old Asian lady who had made racist remarks against my people then rooted against me in a hand.

I wouldn't bother doing anything about the other things mentioned in this thread, but if a dealer makes racist remarks, that should definitely be reported.

I've only seen this happen twice over like almost 20 years.

The reason it happened once was a player who was liked by the dealer who survived an all in bet in a tournament. For whatever reason the dealer liked the player. No tips were involved.

The other was a regular player who had been unlucky and finally won a big pot and the dealer congratulated him as the pot was being pushed (other players were happy as well). I was the losing player in the hand and was really not happy about how the dealer and the other players were dealing with it. But I was new to the game and they didn't know me. I didn't report it because it was a one time event and never happened again with the same dealer (I became a regular in the game).

In a cash game the dealer will likely be thinking that in the moment, with a big pot they could get a large tip (like $5 or $10 or even $25).

If a dealer was rooting the same player on over many different hands I do think I would report it to the Floor (each time it happened) because I don't think I would trust the dealer to not do something that would favor that player (like muck another player's cards). Now I always protect my hand and it has never been mucked by a dealer, but not everyone is that careful.

I agree with chillrob that if a dealer was being a racist openly at the table I would report it to the Floor.

A racist remark I'd respond with, "Excuse me, did you just call me a XXX?" I'd let them either walk it back or call the floor.

However, just simply rooting for an opposing player is not a big deal. The most common case I run into is rooting for a short stack that just went all in with a "good luck, all in."

All of you have been at tables where the dealer is doing this in their head. They just aren't supposed to let out any clues it's happening.

Depending on the severity, it might be worth calling them out or potentially talking to a supervisor, but you'd need something concrete for that. Going to a floor and saying a dealer smiled after you lost a hand will just make you look bad.

Or "rooting" for an interesting runout. Maybe it's not for the specific player, but some card that gives the underdog a shot (especially on the turn).

A while back, dude gets his AA called (inexplicably) postflop by KJo. Second player had to go running KK, JJ, or diamonds. I made the comment that A would be an interesting turn.

Not rooting against P1, just for something interesting to happen. Of course it hit.

The only time I've ever openly rooted against a player was when the player is a friend of mine and I was trolling him.

When it's a player that I truly dislike I try to keep it professional.

I see it happen, but it doesn’t bother me really. Maybe because like Reducto said, I already know they are rooting for certain players. It’s just a matter of politeness that they don’t say anything. It also undermines their ability to control the game, as now if they make a mistake or there’s some kind of close floor decision, people might feel extra upset at this dealer.

Personally I don’t do anything in this spot, just ignore it. They have no impact on the cards that come out whether they’re rude or not. If you get tilted by the comments dealers make that’s probably a mental game leak you should work on.

The only time I might say something is if it’s the spot they’re rooting against. Then I might stick up for the spot with a simple “dealer, please stay focused on running the game”. They usually get the message after that. Normally though it’s the spot that they’re rooting for, in which case they’re actually helping you by subtly encouraging the crazy play of the action player. A happy action player is always good for you.

Only times I've seen it is when some regular that's friendly with the dealer gets 1-outered on the river by someone that should have never been in the pot in the first place. I've seen the dealer chuckle to himself after this happens the third or fourth time.

Seen it often in different scenarios, as long as it’s not over the line, respectful, and most importantly doesn’t influence the game in any way, not much you can do about imo.

At the end of the day, dealers are humans too, they might be friends with someone, or like/not like someone etc
