The "LOLCANADA" thread...again

So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

Canada got duped. We avoided electing an outright Trump sympathiser, but we still elected a prime minister who will align our policies with the United States. Despite all the anti-Trump rhetoric and celebration of the idea that Canada was independent and had no desire to be like the US, we are now passing Maga-inspired legislation.

The newly elected Mark Carney government tabled a border bill that will give law enforcement sweeping powers in obtaining citizen’s data, and will align Canada with the US’s refugee policies. Bill C-2, or the Strong Borders Act, is presented as a border security bill. However, its reach extends beyond border applications to nearly all legislation.

In alignment with the attack on immigrant communities in the US, this bill is anti-immigrant, and in particular anti-refugee. The legislation changes the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to grant the minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship extensive powers to cancel immigration documents, and to suspend or cancel intake in any immigration stream if a high number of applications are pending.

Yikes, latest nanos poll has that unelected non-MP guy down to 26% as preferred PM while Carney soars to 51%. These are the kind of numbers that ensure a stable minority for hopefully a couple years - unless they solidify so much the liberals want to try for a majority. If the cons were smart they’d dump their non-MP leader, but they probably won’t.

That plaid jacket could only be Canadian.

Carney keeps making master strokes in a way that feels actually eerie and scary in some sense, it has been a while since I saw such political savviness and smoothness on the job from anyone especially someone groomed by his career to do other stuff.

it's a one of a kind, generational opportunity for Canada or so it feels, having an actual smart and skillfull mastermind at the helm in a world where most countries have midwits when it goes well.

a cloud of doubts remain for me because I know too little about Canadian politics about his team, the people around him (which I don't think he was able to personally select too much).

given the tragedy of Trudeau government i fear those people are utter trash like Trudeau was, but maybe Carney was able to select the good ones among them and others from outside. I don't know

What scares me is his out of the control spending 4.4 billion to Ukraine were is all this money coming from

Will see if his first deficit is less than a 100 billion

Yikes NATO meeting next week and they are talking of bumping the number up to 5 %
Not a chance Canada can afford that

ya it might go to 3% we can't afford that 5% is probably just a number thrown out so they can settle on 3%

Well no it looks like 5% though 1.5 % can be infrastructure still its a number I just do not think Canada can afford

well its 5% by like 2035. so what will happen is we will sightly raise it untill trump is out of office then go back to status quo. I suspect this is what most of nato will do . Canada will certainly only match what other nato country's do at most so we will have a nice game of chicken for the next decade and I'm ok with it.

5% is not something I believe we can do without drastically lowering quality of life. Were not the American juggernaut that gets to launder petro dollars for free. We have a thing called healthcare that will certainly have to be pushed aside for such a military.

Canada really had no choice but to agree its kind of a non story

you can also do what Italy and others are planning to do, which is to find accounting gimmicks to claim some significant expenses you do for other reasons are actually defense expenses.

Looks like Trump is owning Carney

Let’s wait the end result .
Maybe the gain will exceed the lost shrug .

This particular vein of right wing politics in Canada always trying to perceive every action of Trump as pwing their hated libs is...expected.

Please tell me were we have got a win?

increased tariffs
Nato % up to 5%
Trump got him to drop the digital tax

So Far no wins for Canada

U always complain Canadian were bad because they didn’t pay enough for military nato .
Now they pay more u say they lost ?

Fwiw the digital tax never was in effect anyway .
Nothing prevent Canada to implement it later if trump don’t play ball shrug

Nah I thought 2% was reasonable 5% is ridiculous (yes I know 1.5% is infrastructure) now its like a Justin Trudeau promise it doesn't kick in till 2030 so maybe the strategy is to wait out a Trump Presidency

Nope Carney says he will remove it entirely . I didn't thin k much of it anyways

Exactly my point. This sort of black and white "wins vs loses" mentality, underscored by relentlessly lapdogging trump as the "winner". As Carney says, complex negotiations and all...

Weird, I thought we were elbows up! In a huge trade war on the brink of mass pain and suffering and Carney was going to fight back again the big bully Trump.

Yes. That's what is happening. Canada is experience significant economic pain due to your hero's ridiculous bullying trade war. Carney - thankfully - is fighting back in seemingly pretty competent and measured ways that seem to be staving off the worst case scenarios.

This whole bit where conservatives (whose own unelected leader uses pretty much the same language about fighting back against trump) have such a hissy fit that Carney used a hockey metaphor is hilarious.

Lets not forget Carney promised to have the inter provincial trade barriers down by Canada Day . Now he has made a bit of progress

Though I would admit having Carney deal with Trump is 100 times better than Justin and 3 times better than Pierre I suspect

More to the point, if Poilievre had won we would be deprived of trumpkins whining like this:
Looks like Trump is owning Carney
Trump is making both your countries lose.

People who think otherwise should stop listening to Trump-sycophants. They speak for no person's benefit but their own.

Had a good laugh at Timbit Trumpkin

The difference is I’d be saying the same thing about Pierre . Unlike you I’m not blind to a PMs shortfalls or failure to deliver on promises

You forget also I said I was wrong about Trump being better for Canada while you still think Trudeau was a great PM

The problem is you should never have been wrong to begin with.

by weeeez

Well I am not voting for Trump and said I never would if I was an American. Though he seems to be delivering on his promises even if some are terrible

How do you explain anyone that voted for Trudeau three times? Trudeau has done more to destroy Canada than Trump has
