You are right if you talk from the center, but for some people the two candidates are disgusting for different reasons than those who evaluate from the center.
There isn't only one axis for everyone.
There is also the party machine behind in the specifics of the USA.
For example a person who considers mc Cain a lot better than the unknown quantity of obama in 2008, but is liberal leaning wrt judicial decisions, can vote Obama because he will pick liberal judges.
Another person in 2016 might be turned off by the grotesque antics of Trump and admit he looks like a worse person than HRC but the fact he will have to pick a key SCOTUS judge immediately, and perhaps others later, motivates him to vote Trump if he prefers the judicial philosophy of the right.
Also the game isn't played only once. You can signal something by non voting, for example that both are too far away from you.
That might motivate someone in the future to move a little toward you and your fellows, if there are enough people like you and that gets captured in polls.

in this case I think it is definitely being misapplied at least.
I prefer to make the more positive case with the conditional thrown in. if you have a preference and don’t vote, you are helping the person that you disprefer over the one you prefer.
and I would bite the bullet and say that you should vote for the 99% Hitler over the 100% Hitler.
