It seems most of the weaknesses of democracy in a racially/culturally diverse nation that Lee Kuan Yew noted are becoming amplified. And maybe the only real solution is some sort of benevolent monarchy, which is essentially what Singapore is.
Don't get all the "this is why we have Trump", "imagine not being able to beat THIS guy!" stuff. Trump crushed all the Republicans and then beat Hillary in 2020, lost to Brandon in a close one which likely would have gone the other way if not for COVID, and then rolled Kamala.

Combine that with the country-club Republican fascists who will come along because of taxes and the cultural right with their single-issue abortion voters and the rest... and boom, two-term President and the most consequential figure of 21st Century American politics.

Social media is the establishment. Nothing has changed but the names and means. What has changed is that unlimited money is allowed in elections. This is what enabled Trump and why Trump won. It's why: Palantir is cataloging all our data. Private prisons are overfilled with whoever ICE can snatch. Starlink is being forced onto rural USA. NASA is being replaced by SpaceX. The list is endless.
We can re-enable democracy by removing all money from public elections. This would be very cheap and cost effective.
