I'm not sure I subscribe to this purely descriptive approach to definitions, but it's an interesting discussion. There has to be some sort of threshold beyond which it's pointless trying to be prescriptive and retain the original definition, like with "literally". But somewhere in between there has to be room for "this word means x but a common error is using it to mean y".

I might be mistaken on this but my gut feeling is that the bastardisation of the meaning of "literally" predates social media by a fair bit.

It's not my main job, but I'm a technical advisor company looking to wind down and sell inventory but needs fairly expensive electrical components turned into finished assemblies (battery solar charging stations w/inverters) We've literally already done all the work, have complete drawings on how to assemble and test everything and we're supplying the expensive components. It's insane how bad these small contract companies are at writing proposals. No matter how cheap they are you can't even trust them to receive and store crap much less assemble and test properly given how poorly they communicate. It's dumb to send tis stuff to Mexico just for this but that's what we're looking at.

I'm sure you know this but plenty of words have evolved into meaning something very different from their original use.
With something like begs the question I guess I think of the way it's commonly come to be used as just an alternate defn. A huge chunk of the people that use it the other way probably couldn't tell you the actual meaning if their life depended on it but in the convos they're having when it's used the people involved both "know" what the person means 😀
