Social media these is filled to the brim with bottom-feeding pundits from all over the political spectrum who pretty make a career out of monitoring breaking events and then flooding the feeds with politicized takes and conspiracies. What we also see more and more is brazen use of half truths combined with fabrication. It works particularly well during dramatic events, as these often put readers / viewers in an emotional state where they are less critical.
The conservative media eco-system during the Biden presidency managed to falsely portray the federal aid response during to a natural disaster as a conspiracy about the federal government being there to take people's land and bring in more immigrants. As a result, some people refused help and even threatened responders as result. Thus they risked their own lives, the lives of the responders and the lives of others (by complicating aid efforts). The Trump campaign and Trump himself also spread these conspiracies, which I guess is just one more example of how morally bankrupt modern day "conservatism" and its leadership has become.
When you can exploit social media to make people load their rifles and threaten responders trying to help them during a hurricane, making your readers believe in half-truths / fabrication about a political terrorist should not exactly pose a problem.
And the best part is that there is no price to pay. The media cycle moves so fast that the next shiny story will be there long before the curtain closes, and nobody will really care that you deceived them... most will likely never know.

There was a hit list in his vehicle which was of Democratic politicians including US Senators in at least three states, and others linked to pro-choice activism.
