But my mental picture was something like the USSR after WWII buildings draped with Stalin's portrait, thousands crisply goose stepping to brass fanfare etc. If people knew what it was going to actually look like I think they woulda just laughed and moved on.

The same goes for meticulously kept parade uniforms.
