77 vs maniac + lag, preflop decision

77 vs maniac + lag, preflop decision

1/3 7 handed

Just sat down.

V1 is a maniac fish, opens super wide, will call 3bets with nearly whole opening range besides premiums. He's well known to the whole table for his spewy aggro plays.

V2 is a young asian guy, plays laggy style. opens/3bets light. Views hero as aggro, hh from last time, V2 limp in sb vs hero in straddle, tried to trap oop with 9t2r w/9to just x/c 2st,xx river, I asked why he slowplayed, he said I'm probably trigger happy from the way he saw me play.

Actual hand#1
Effective stacks 300, just sat down, this is the very 2nd hand.

V1 opens to 20 in mp, V2 in Btn calls, Hero in bb with 77? call? raise? fold?

Hand#2
1 orbit later, Effective stacks 270
V1 limps in utg, V2 in Mp opens to 20, Hero in btn with 77???

Hand 1:

Call closing the action to set mine. With no FE vs either player, 77 should be a pure call imo. Don't know about V1, but sounds like we can take V2 to value town with a set that he'll never believe.

Hand 2:

I probably call here, for the same reasons. If V1 never folds, what are we accomplishing by opening up the action for V2?

Maybe I'm playing this too passively, but 77 seems too in between for me to want to 3! in either spot.

Hand 1: Happy to setmine getting 15-1 IO closing the action against this lineup, because we are likely to get paid if we hit. V2 on BTN has capped himself on BTN by not 3b, which given his description he would 3b with anything premium. Call.

I'd rather fold than raise. I would fold against competent TAGs here.

Hand 2: Prefer to raise here IP. Hopefully we take it down without a fight. Or V2 may be disbelieving since we are on BTN and call us light. Calling leaves up open to raises from blinds and V1 xr.

I think getting 15+:1, and non-short stacks, and without a crapload of dead money in the pot relative to stacks, I'm fine with just sigh ~setmining.

If I was sitting at my normal shortish $200 stack and saw like 3 or 4 action players putting in decent dead money then I'd be more for shoving.

I ended up calling on both. Missed both and folded on flops.
But afterwards, I think maybe start out aggro early on in the session to get paid later on in the night. We usually have super tight image.
Even though our 77 is very light as a 3bet, but their range are very wide as well. If we have squeezed the first one, doesn't matter if it goes to showdown or not, then on the 2nd one, lag will think we're FOS again might 4bet light and get it in with his whole opening range.
Anyhow, they both played pots together almost every hand for the first 1-2 hours I was there until V1 moved to 5/10 that was starting.
Then another crazier maniac took his spot and spewed off chips to the whole table.

First is borderline call for setmining. Second is a fold for me. If you want to raise for image, just shove. Otherwise the hand is mostly unplayable postflop.

You've described mostly preflop play, so a lot of this depends on postflop play. For set mining in general you want:
- about 15:1 implied odds on your call (if you're sure you can get stacks in if you hit, you could go maybe 12:1)
- passive or smaller raise preflop
- aggressive and crazy postflop

You aren't really getting the first two, and the last one is not answered, so these are not great setmining opportunities.

For maniacs, you are simply going to have to commit to playing with stacks sometimes. This is high variance poker. You can combat this by buying in for the min and shortstacking, then waiting for top hands and shoving. You can burn several short stacks that way but you'll be on the +EV side. Double up and then start playing poker.

What these large raises do is change the dynamics of the game. Blinds become irrelevant. Everything is shorter stacked (effectively) with lower SPR scenarios ruling. Play premium high cards and stop playing nonsense like 75s.
