Not sure where to put this, but I think it’s pretty crazy. Texas passed a law in the early 2000s that let undocumented kids qualify for in state tuition. Not free money, not scholarships, just they would pay the in state rate. Rick Perry lauded it. There was an attempt to rescind the law this past year- which failed. As in, not enough state reps supported repealing it. So after
This is interesting.
1) so forum shopping is actually blatant and has huge consequences and should be fixed / reduced somehow. And that's true both for people interested in avoiding legal outcomes that facilitate leftism and by people interested in avoiding legal outcomes that facilitate nut rightwing stuff.
2) At the end it was still elected representatives that made the call so democracy isn't violated. But it's a power struggle between the local legislature and other individuals elected individually. We see that replayed with executive vs congress at the federal level a lot, and at the state level you have even more different nexus of power (the AG could be not aligned with the governor and actually eyeing for that role) competing with each other.
There is no "best solution" to that and at the end it will be up to the population of every polity to find a balance they agree with, same as how pardon rules were changed dramatically in states were abuses of that power were obscene in the past.
Q1 imports were frontrunning this. That was bad too. Who said it was good?
The China faucet has to be turned on or replaced but it can't be replaced so this indicates very bad things. We know bad things about about to happen because JD Vance just blamed the Biden administration for not keeping up with supply lines.

It can't both be bad lol that's the point.
Taking drastic action to front run uncertainty isn't "good"
Maybe you think macroeconomics is a binary vacuum?

I think you can either think trade deficits are good , or that they are bad, or that they don't matter that much (I think that), but you can't both think frontrunning a lot of import is bad but then importing less when tariffs are higher is bad as well lol.
it just can't be.
It's amazing how much monery something like Mcdonalds is making and I don't get it. Are there any fast food fans in the house?
Everytime i go to home depot, there is a line of 40 vehicles extending halfway through the parking lot for the drive through window. I walked in to home depot and was there for prolly 25 mins and when i left the same vhecile was probably 50% closer to the window. I get it, it was lunch time and peak hours but it looks pretty consistent and would be way more than enough for me to find another way like brown bagging it or something.
Is it just an addiciton now? Because a quick number crunch with what i pay for a giant bag of fries, beef and buns, I can make those burgers at a small fraction of what they are charging - not to mention probably go to costco, and come home a cook it before i even reach the window sow wtf is going on. Maybe its just this locatin but i've heard that its everywhere.
It won't have that addictive McD smell though.

i don't eat fastfood almost ever but j do eat takeout of stuff sometimes.
in general for me and for most people i talk about it's because of convenience with timing and cleaning the kitchen and so on. + a lot of people aren't that good at preparing food in general so for them it's either eat badly (taste-wise) at home or buy prepared food.
and you simply can't buy any prepared food regularly that isn't fastfood unless you are very rich so fast food it is most of the times.
now the 50 min queue, tbh that's something I don't think is normal, but maybe it's different in the USA.

Almost like its not about the deficit at all
Most producers and manufacturers use JIT inventory because it removes uncertainty. Produce what is needed when its needed.
The increased imports are an indication of the level of uncertainty. The reduced imports are the culmination of that predicted uncertainty.

Part of what makes Latin America great is that you have street food options where you get all the convenience of fast food without it technically being fast food.

JIT as known increases risk as well. Covid, wars etc
It's not the future. The future is local print on demand based JIT. Tariffs provide a big boost to this although like most serious economcs we're talking years/decades not days/weeks

You can get 2 double cheeseburgers and a lg drink for like $5 if you use the app properly. But LOL at going through the drive-thru. Order ahead with the app and either go in to get it or get it curbside. Drive-thru is for noobs.
And sadly, yes, I am a fan. I don't do it very often, but it's a guilty pleasure of mine.

JIT is used to minimise cost not risk.
I said uncertainty, not risk, and while there is risk in uncertainty, there are also costs associated with uncertainty
Understanding risk is about predicting outcomes which is the opposite of uncertainty

Actual addiction to junk food is certainly a thing, but that is tied more to dopamine than it is to flavor. Eating disorders in general is a complicated topic, and one surrounded by such toxic discourse that it is mostly useless to discuss in a political setting.
Addiction used in a more colloquial sense, as in referring to simply eating a lot of junk food, is in most cases not addiction in that sense. What you see there is simply a result of junk food being manipulative by design. It uses combinations of salt, fat, sugar, flavor enhancers and various processing (to remove the tastes and textures we typically like less) to make a product that ticks as many evolutionary / biological boxes as possible for making us crave it.
The people who do those designs are very good at their jobs, as is evident by the success of snacks and junk food in general. In addition it comes in quick and easy servings that require little to no effort on the customer's part.
Combine this with the fact that the people generally struggle with or reject the idea that they are strongly influenced by instinct or biological drives, and you have a stellar recipe for corporate success. There is even an industry in the other end that earns enormous amounts of money by "fixing" (in reality it earns more money by selling people solutions that barely work, so they get repeat customers) people and making them "healthy" again.
As for your observation, it isn't hard to construct scenarios where junk food comes off as irrational. It isn't really a product that is predicated on rationality to begin with.
And no, I'm no food zealot and people can stuff themselves with whatever they want as far as I am concerned. However, I think everyone should be aware of manipulative practices of design in junk food and snacks, and also have a general idea on the gap between what your body needs and what it is offered. The unfortunately reality in many developed nations these days is that an average diet is no longer healthy for people with an average level of activity.
Yeah but sometimes after 7 pints the big mac is just perfect.
Man can't live on vindaloo alone and a donner can be hard to find.

Yeah, we are biologically wired for survival in a world that no longer exists or demands it.
The last time I ate fast food i posted in this thread that I threw up afterwords with headache and sweats and I've been on a strict diet and rigorous workouts for two years now. I think i've had fast food 5-10 times in the last 15 years and maybe twice in the last 10 years. My body rejects in like an allergy.
What we’re seeing is a perfect storm of calorie dense, nutrient poor food becoming the norm, activity levels tanking due to sedentary lifestyles, rising depression and anxiety leading to disordered eating, and the old normal becoming the new excessive. People are weaker, more fatigued, and more detached from what real health looks like.
Mix all of those things with Mickey Ds purposefully flavor engineering texture and chemicals to boost bottom line and you've really got a successful recipe for disaster. But it's okay because we've got Ozempic now.

Creepy little doom gobblins like this one certainly don't scare anyone. Real courage is what the soldiers of the IDF are doing. Going tunnel to tunnel looking for hostages and taking out Hamas.
I'm not shocked you fell for this publicity stunt.
You’re scared by the dark, scared by cities in your own country and scared by little girls.
It’s all classic incel stuff. Now go back to paying people to spend time with you.
The White House says his return has nothing to do with his mistaken deportation and say he's only come back to the US because "a new investigation has revealed crimes SO HEINOUS...only the American Justice System could hold him fully accountable"
No comment would be better.
