Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Great films new to Criterion this month. Ripley films, huge collection of Johnnie To movies, along with a collection starring Gene Hackmen.
If you don't have Criterion's streaming service, you're missing out.
Highly recommend To'd Election and Mad Detective. There's also a few I haven't seen yet.

Do you need cable for this, or can you stream these on a laptop? (I made a good-faith effort to get this info off their web site, but all I get are requests for my credit card number...)

I stream them to both my TV and Chromebook. Should be able to download the app and open on the laptop.
Also, a few Alan Rudolph movies this month.

Me too. Was underwhelmed and think that the driving crooner and Brian’s hat are two of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. I think my expectations were way too high.
Bring her back (2025) is another film by the Philippou brothers that builds on Talk to Me and is better than Talk to Me with a great performance from the cast particularly Sally Hawkins but just like Talk to Me I really don't have any interest in seeing it again. Just shows its impact I guess. Would recommend.
Anything from these two brothers in the future is a must see but let's hope they stay as independent as they can be and away from US studios.

Sinners (2025)
Wow. Amazing film. Blends its drama, musical and Horror elements seamlessly and it doesn't skimp on the horror either. Excellent performances, particularly Michael B Jordan & Delroy Lindo.
Easily one of the best films I've seen in several years.Ryan Go ogler knocked it outa the park with this one.
And considering I'm from Dublin, this scene along with its song was a huge and very pleasant surprise.
yeah, Jack O'Connell as the Irish vampire leader should get a best supporting actor nom...he was incredible
I loved that Coogler drew on the Irish heritage of the vampire to have that different angle from where he was coming. Just one of so many brilliant tweaks that added another dimension to the film
About Endlessness by Roy Anderson
I love Andersson's films. Not much seems to happen but who cares. Anderson never moves the camera, and each tableaux of a scene lasts only a couple minutes.
The film captures bits of life: a man on a bus full of people cries, saying I don't know what to do; a priest dreams he's carrying a cross and realizes he has lost his faith (the priest's story is the only one that plays out in more than two tableauxs); three girls walk towards a small cafe and start to dance; Hitler appears in a bunker as explosions thunder.
Most of the scenes are unrelated yet tied together, often with the sound from one scene carrying over to the next. Talk about deep space and depth of field. You'll find yourself looking all over the frame, spotting someone walking in the distance.
I guess for Andersson life is sad, terrible, or happy, filled with joy and pain. In one scene a boy tells a girl about the first law of thermodynamics. He tells her energy can't disappear and she could come back as a potato or a tomato.
Tomato she says.

Yeah I enjoyed that too. The movie's score was very good as was the acting and cinematography. Just the writing let it down.

I am left wondering, if the script knew what a tomato is... I thimk so.
The idea of a tomato wanting to come back as a tomato is simply glorious!
then again... I guess I could just spend my hard earned dollars plugging myself into some random 'Vampire' movie.

He was awesome in it and his character was surprisingly layered as opposed to some generic villain. I'd like to see him get the nom- the Oscars seem a bit snobby when it comes to the horror genre, but hopefully they make a rare exception here. I grew up listening to Rocky Road to Dublin and have heard many different versions but I gotta say this is one of the best, I really liked how it blended Irish folk with soul. Jack O'Connell really showed his range with this, he was great in Eden Lake as well.

quite a lovely movie with an EXCEPTIONAL soundtrack/score. There are no Aliens this time, but there is a deep underscore of modern ruling class ideologies and criticisms thereof.

He & the other two were certainly one of the best fictional musical acts I’ve ever seen in a movie or on TV!
Of course, Joey Lauren Adams tends to make things better. It's one of those that's not great, but pulls me in each time.
Joey & Parker Posey became insta BFFs on the set of Dazed & Confused, even were kinda snobby & mean about it, stayed close for years after, but it all fell apart one Sundance when Parker didn’t show up for one of Joey’s things.

Reminds me of some of the great character actors over the course of time. Guys like Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Tommy Lee Jones were cutie pies when they broke in, if you can believe it.
