I find it strangely liberating because I have zero expectations to live up to when I'm there. In Japan, I get the whole bench to myself on trains because nobody can guess what they'll catch if they sit next to me.

I always used to ask people where they were from when I was playing poker. I loved hearing their adventures as tourists or immigrants. Now, when I ask that question, they can become extremely guarded, as though waiting for an attack. it puts me in an awkward position--the only people who seem to love America as much as I do are immigrants, and now they won't talk to me. I've become more of a misanthrope than Zeno.

Countries definitely go through cycles of political polarization and depolarization. I remember the US scene being a lot more chill in the 80s and 90s. Remember Reagan Democrats?

I mean, there were still plenty of shrill radicals and reactionaries, but their numbers were fewer than today, and their voices were marginalized pre-Internet.

I'd kinda agree with most of this part if you replace Asians with Chinese, that's a big difference (here, let's not complicate things too much incl. both mainland and taiwan). But even there it's not that easy, everyone's a little different. And when you talk about not needing to have your guard up in (most of) Asia, you forgot to mention three very decisive points

- The education system (to simplify it a bit peeps are indoctrinated from a very young age to follow the rules rather than having their own ideas)
- The religious background (obv talking mostly about Buddhism here)
- And finally ofc the effin gun and other weapon laws, that correlation is superhigh

Totally disagree on that, if anything it's the other way around, there are stories of love and compassion and caring for the weak all around. Ofc there are also a-holes and bad people and whatnot. Here just the first random thing that came into my mind.

And yep you can find this even a lot in China, I don't have the time to search now but it is totally regarded as honorable to care for anything weak and vulnerable, it's still a largely Buddhist-influenced society. Yes, there are also more than enough A-hole Chinese, just like Westerners.

You know one of the smartest things I read recently was that if Chinese and Westerners would like to understand each other better, every Westerner should read one of the major works of Sun Yat-sen and every Chinese should read 1984. Obv that is never going to happen.

I think we're over it, though I'd argue that we hewed closer on average to sociology than politics; it's just that the latter tends to seep into everything these days.

I had a good night on the slots; throw another $500 or so on to the hoard—or in this case, chip it away from the credit card debt hill. It's been a good month for me. I might open up a few more hours for poker and bump up my buyin...we'll see.

I've always been impressed, and maybe a bit put off, that this single—a huge and enduring hit—was so blatantly written as a succinct and efficient process by which groupies at the band's live shows are identified, parsed, corralled, separated from their dates, given clear guidelines and expectations for their future performance backstage, and requisitioned for their tacit consent for same.

The songwriters, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm, make this recurring booty call seem fun and naughty, rather than just a just a cold-blooded transaction. From this I believe that the boys would have a fine career in upper management, if they weren't already rock stars.

I've been pondering the change in mindset that's prompted me visit the casino (i.e. get to work) regularly over the past month, and I've concluded that it breaks down into two very simple and primal concepts, concepts that have been hardwired into my DNA across hundreds of millions of years. They are as follows:

(1) The others are out there scooping up the Yum Yums.

(2) Those are my Yum Yums!

This concept works well for the slots; with poker, on the other hand, the Yum Yums are always out there, more or less, so why not take a day off, or perhaps a week or a month off, one day at a time, always telling myself that I'll return tomorrow?

With slots, scooping up equity is only part of the deal; the rest of it is denying equity to the part-time riff raff, and sending them home broken-hearted so that they think twice about making the trip again, or bragging to their friends about the easy money.

This, I believe, is the main utility of the Asian Syndicate. If the worker bees are traffickees, then they won't cost much to position on the floor nearly 24/7, scooping up the Yum Yums and fending off the crumb-bums.

The Asian Syndicate coverage, while good, isn't total. And I have a niche where I can play poker when the slots are bad. I don't have to sit and cool my heels and wait for the Yum Yums to grow back. And I don't have to go home, broken-hearted.
