99 vs a min 3bet

1/3 9 handed

Villain just sat down not too long ago. He's young white guy. He is first time here. He wanted to do things like Mississippi straddle on btn which wasn't allowed here. I asked where does he usually play at, he said home games with fds.

Effective stacks 500

V straddles for 6, Utg(lag) opens for 20, 1 caller, Hero in sb with 99 decides to flat.
V clicks it to 40???
All call
Hero? call? back4bet?

Imho the lag in Utg probably would've 4betted with TT+/Ak+ facing this small 3bet. So we're only worry about Villains range?

A guy that wants to straddle every time he’s allowed min clicks? With 2 callers in between there’s enough in there to jam and live with the result. I expect 3 folds a huge % of the time, sometimes one of them calls with 2 overs which is a fine result.

As confused as I am by his preflop play, I don't play for big stacks with a middling pair until I get a better idea of what is going on. So I would ~setmine, hopefully get to see what he has, and then adjust accordingly.

honestly depends on lag and field caller and new kid. kid could have AA here, lag and caller seemed capped. This can be a backraise at some of my games but only if UTG is a button clicker. price is too good to fold now. hate calling the 20

I would squeeze pre. $20 isn't a huge raise over a $6 straddle and I am guessing the LAG is significantly wider than optimal.

I don't know if the back-4b represents anything (Are you ever flatting the SB with a big hand? IMO it's extremely face-up as a pocket pair) but it's probably better than putting in $40 to play a guessing game OOP four ways.

The back jam isn't face up as a pp. It could be AK or AQ.

I either flat and basically set-mine/evaluate or raise to ~$250 and expect them all to fold or shove, we hope w/ worse. As stated, UTG and caller are capped. V is a gambler -- get him to gamble.

No way I'm folding.

If it's 40 total and you have 20 already in I think calling is the default play. You could reraise but need more info on what he makes it 40 with and the backraise looks sus.

Ok we back jammed, Villain snapped with AA

Ouch. How long had he been at the table? What did he want to do besides Mississippi straddle (which I love, BTW)? Had you seen him play any other hands?

(My husband plays like a loose maniac for small pots, but it gets him called when he has the goods every time in big pots. I usually get more action at NLHE when I ask about straddling or when they find out I'm waiting for PLO. Maybe this guy was hoping for the same.)

Doesn't surprise me. Sometimes you see click-back 3!s from fish that are AA/KK. Here he could be trying to induce someone to do what OP did. Better from his point of view to 3! normally and check a big pot, as often everyone just calls to click back. Sometimes those click backs are nothing too. I remember shoving QQ short stacked over one of those and taking it down.

Not sure why we'd even consider back raising here with 99. Yes, we're probably ahead of the flat callers, but we may not be, or may not be ahead by much, and may not be ahead of V. We're probably not folding out many hands unless we go huge, and if we go huge and get action we're almost never ahead.

Just flat call and set mine.
