THE BEAUTIFUL BUDGET

I don't think it's very beautiful, from what I've heard about it.

No need to increase the military budget, let alone a la

I am using the term Evolutionism descriptively, not derogatorily. That said, I sometimes do use derogatory expressions sometimes when referencing Evolution, to wit:"

He can use the same terrible excuse.

Fair point!

Although I wouldn't call it a terrible excuse --- or even an excuse at all.

Note well that there is no such thing as "trickle down economics." That was a term of derision used by Supply Side detractors.

What are u talking about ….https://www.investopedia.com/terms/t/tri....

Its kind of like "The Big Bang Theory", it was originally created by detractors as a derogatory name for the hypothesis that the universe has expanded from a tiny volume to its present size. The name stuck, even as the evidence piled up making it the most likely explanation for what happened during 13 billion years of the universe.

The name "trickle down theory" was created in the same way, as detractors of Supply Side economics wanted to frame it poorly. The problem is that a) "supply side economics" is poorly defined, and b) "trickle down" makes it into a straw man that doesn't actually address its claims.

Supply side has basic claims such as there are optimal tax rates that generate more revenues than higher and lower rates because they are at the sweet spot where they promote investment and more employment that creates new industries, businesses and jobs, where higher rates would discourage as much investment, employment, and as much new economic activity (as well as tax avoidance) that ultimately generates less tax revenues.

"trickle down" doesn't really address the claims honestly. Like one of its claims is that workers can be discourage by high marginal rates into not working as much. It also doesn't advocate targeting the tax breaks at the wealthy, one of its main planks is lowering capital gain rates which everyone can benefit from. The wealthy benefit more, sure, but the tax break is universally available.

The truth is that increasing investment increases productivity and economic output, and raises median incomes. In fact, its the only way to increase productivity (outside of eliminating productivity sapping laws/regulations), and increasing productivity is the only way to increase living standards. To increase investment requires attracting capital from those who have it, and unfortunately that's primarily the wealthy, so on paper any effort to increase living standards will disproportionately benefit them.

The common claim that Supply Side failed is that deficits exploded after Reagan implemented it, but that ignores the fact that deficits are product of two things, not just tax revenues but also spending.

Spending as a percentage of GDP exploded during Reagans terms, primarily because of increases in military spending.

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/FYONGDA188S

Tax receipts plummeted the first year of the Reagan tax cuts, but then steadily grew back to higher than the averages of the 60s/early 70s.

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=ockN

So clearly the claims that tax revenues would fully rebound were false, but the strong economic growth and partial recovery of tax revenues during the rest of Reagans term is compelling evidence to support the idea that reforming a high rate tax system with large loopholes into a fairer lower rate system can boost economic growth and median incomes.

Maybe you should give him your arbitrary list of which terms of derision are acceptable.

"Evolutionism" and "Evolutionists" are derogatory terms invented by creationists.

Evolution is just science, those who study it are just scientists, though they may specialize in biology, paleontology, etc.

And research demonstrates it as the most likely explanation for the diversity of life on this planet with an overwhelming amount of evidence. Its so accepted that even Young Earth Creationists appeal to evolution to explain how the tiny number of species they believe were on the mythical Ark during the mythical Flood expanded to create the many millions of species we have today.

Can you name some other contexts where republicans are so willing to place their faith in hopes and dreams? We could do all kinds of neat stuff if the only metric was dubious feelings about the future economy. Usually they're climbing out of their skin ranting about how we can't afford anything.

National Healthcare? Why not? trump just lit the fuse on the greatest economy to ever exist in the entire universe...potentially. We can afford it 😀. etcetc..

You are talking about politics, I’m talking about economics.

If you want to talk about politics, all I have to say is the current structure of our political system means both parties run large deficits, in order to direct funding to their supporters.

And if you want to afford national healthcare, may I suggest we do what Europe did? Cut military spending so low it’s not adequate to defend us from realistic threats, and then have another wealthy country transfer 1% of their GDP every year for 80 years directly to within our borders in aid, bases, troops, and equipment necessary to defend us since we no longer will do it.

Not according to wikipedia. (Not that wikipedia is infallible.)

I, of course, also believe in Natural Selection, but not in any form of Darwinism.

That said, all recorded observations in history have cats having kittens and dogs having puppies.

Advocating for policy about who gets what&how doesn't fit into the definition of politics? I think it does 😀

I have a question, I don't really understand the medicaid aspect of the big beautiful bill

the CBO score says it will cut by up to 800B/8m people over 10 years but the only change for it seems to be work requirements? How does that square? Most people on medicaid work or get exemptions for elder care/disability.

I didn't read any other changes to it from the bill but if the requirements are only going to affect a small # of people, how are the #s so big?

I know in Missouri/Georgia they tried work requiremens and people just didn't fill the paperwork but 800B/8M people comes from just not knowing how to comply or being able to?

The estimate savings are 700-800 bln over 10 years with estimated 8-10m people losing coverage because of working requirements and increased frequency of eligibility verification yes.

What surprises you about that? A medicaid enrollee costs more than 9k/year.

There are approx 80m people on medicaid and a quarter of them are adults without children who aren't disabled . Those are basically all people who got into medicaid with Obamacare expansion of it.

The savings will come from people missing out on forms and stuff yes.

Or failing to work for various reasons.

You have to remember people are horrible in general, and low iq low income people are even worse. In their world filing a form is as hard as it is to you to buy a Lambo.

They change addresses without reporting that, and so on.

But yes maybe the data you were missing is that medicaid is exceptionally expensive, close to 10k/year/person.

Yes that means that taxpayers are on the hook for 40k/year when a family of 4 enrolls.

My villain arc definitely began during the year I worked as a debt collector right out of high school and talked to untold thousands of deadbeats who had every excuse in the book about why they couldn't pay their $25 bill for an ER visit at St. Joe's, or their public library late fees. Those were the two clients that fed a majority of the database I worked from.

"I'm on disability, I don't have to pay."

Mother****er, you're 20 years old and we both know you're not disabled. I can literally hear you playing basketball or whatever the hell is going on in the background on this cell phone you can apparently afford in 2001. I don't care what scam you're pulling with the social workers, but taxpayers paid 99.9% of these bills for you and there's $25 left. Pay up.

I still feel disgust when I think about that job. Every bleeding-heart lefty should have to work as a debt collector for a little while. That'll cure you of your empathy for people with a victim complex or undeserved sense of entitlement real quick.

Deadbets scamming peanuts is just the tip of the iceberg here we were actually mentioning people not capable of getting free expensive stuff they are given because they can't deal with life basics like reporting their address to authorities that give them free stuff or filing forms.

Both parties and the nonpartisan CBO agree that something like 5% of current medicaid enrollees would lose coverage just if you ask them to refile more often proving they still have eligibility.

And not because they lose eligibility but because they won't file. For something worth 10k/person/year for their household.

Cell phones in 2001 didn't cost any more than cell phones today fwiw. Less actually. Maybe a 1995 cell phone would set you back a bit but not 2001.

Inso0 wistfully reminiscing about the happier times when he got to take the bottles of newborns' mouths to cover their single mothers' late library book fees is rather on brand. I guess now he only gets to write letters evicting them, so he can't witness first hand those sweet, sweet tears rolling down their cheeks as they pack up the last of their meagre belongings.

And yet we have a president who has a history of not paying his debts.

Yeah, **** Trump and his business plan.

This was before Obamaphones. If I'm reaching you on a cell phone, you can pay the bill I'm calling about.

Unfortunately d2, our screening criteria keeps those single mothers out of the property to begin with. In more than a decade, I've had to evict precisely 0 people for nonpayment. Any notices we send are for failure to abide by the other terms of the lease. Holding band practice in your house, setting the dumpsters on fire, bringing in unauthorized animals, etc.

Maybe but cell phones were already ubiquitous long before 2008.

when there are only 2 parties, with similar amounts of people voting for them, both parties are being voted by A LOT of low IQ/low willpower/lazy/otherwise-deficient people, necessarily.

You don't ask why poor people voting democrats should care about SALT deducion caps, do you? or subsidies to let the middle or uppermiddle class install solar in their houses and buy EV, while they rent low quality housing with no panels and they take the bus?

Or why poor people voting for democrats should care about forfeiting the student loans of people who went to college if... they themselves couldn't afford to even think about going to college?

btw it's not the "republican base" who are horrible low IQ people who can't fill out forms.

It's medicaid expansion enrollees. Which mostly don't vote, and when they do, in many cases vote for democrats as well.

Those are all incredibly simple questions to answer

SALT is a republican agenda. Solar panel subsidies reduces demand on the electricity grid which lowers prices for consumers. High income earners spending more taxable income helps everyone, including the government. Sending 1$ to the government does infinitely less for the system than spending 1$.

And "not being able to afford college" isn't a thing. Poor people can get Pell Grants for enough money to cover tuition and moderate living expenses. I know because I paid for college this way.

It's medicaid expansion enrollees. Which mostly don't vote, and when they do, in many cases vote for democrats as well.

Hot take: I don't care which party you vote for, but if you need income to live and can work to acquire said income, you should work.

If you're too ******ed to hold a job at a private place of business, I support Uncle Sam paying them money to scour their shitty neighborhoods and fill trash bags.

Uncle Sam shovels a **** ton more money to the rich and corporations that they do able bodied folks on the dole. But that's ok, right?

We received WIC for a few months back when it was actual coupons for milk, eggs, bread, peanut butter, etc. My wife was in her final year of college, we followed the rules and got out of the program when she finished, and I've paid that back a thousand times since then.

It should be a stop-gap. Not a way of life.

Possibly not, but there's always a big difference between giving someone money and letting them keep the money they already have. Most corporate welfare programs are the second category. Individual welfare is the first.
