Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.

my dear MovieDate with Kate with proper WTF reaction to this scene during the movie. for anyone who has never read Stephen King's novel....
Spoiler
the guy on the left is in a DOG suit and he torments Danny with glowing red eyes anytime Danny tries to leave his room at night. The guy on the right was a former owner of the Overlook Hotel way back when...
I like the movie "Hurry Up Tomorrow" just out. Critics panning it. One of the biggest discrepancies on Rotten Tomatoes between viewers and critics, like 71-13. Of course the people going are The Weeknd fans. I didnt even know it was about him.
It tells the story of fictionalized The Weeknd musician, going insanely into his rock image and chemicals. Losing it. A pyromaniac groupie kidnaps him, ties him up, gonna burn him alive if he doesn't talk honestly about where the theme of his song's are coming from (pain, angst, fear, abandonment, etc.). Bytch is serious, she has a huge cannister of gasoline and is on a mission. He's self-medicating off the charts and destroying himself and hurting everyone around him, and she's trying to "help."
A little bit reminiscent of the Freddie Mercury movie, showing it all from inside the rock stars head who is just ultra tripping out on the adulation and chemicals. Mercury said he couldn't tolerate the "in between moments," thus his need for the high, and this is a similar theme. They just had to be in the hyped up moment.
Anyway, he comes clean, she unties him and then sets the place alight for good measure. Tripping, loud, frenzied, psychotic type stuff all throughout.
Paddington in Peru
Enjoyable if not as great as Paddington 2.
Love the references to other films: The Sound of Music, Buster Keaton's Steamboat Bill Jr. , Indiana Jones, Fitzcarraldo, and Apocalypse Now. All the Paddington movies reference other films, such as The Third Man and Modern Times.
Unfortunately, Paddington in Peru does not include the great Sally Hawkins as Mrs. Brown.

1978 (2024)
Set against the backdrop of the world cup final between Argentina and Holland, four torturers for the Argentine military dictatorship pick up a quartet of suspected young dissidents only to find out they most certainly aren't who they seem, in this grim and nasty Horror, that actually comes across as a bit of a rip off of the Turkish Horror Baskin. (2015), as broadly, the premise is somewhat similar and the FX/makeup/overall look were almost certainly influenced by. I still thought it was quite effective though, albeit not for everyone.
Time After Time (1979)
Malcolm McDowell's HG Wells chases through time David Warner's Jack the Ripper after he high tails it to 1979, in this somewhat slow moving but interesting enough film. The naff badly aged FX only add to the overall charm.
Shepard & Dark (2012)
I didn't, give a shlt about the truth then, and still don’t.
43 years of friendship: The golden age of letter writing!
Johnny married the mother, and Sam married the daughter.
Destiny: You are the culprit!
A few rules to live by:
- Keep driving, even if you forget where you’re going;
- Never stay more than 30 seconds after you realize you don’t want to be there;
- Spend all your money, then get some more!
Another interesting documentary without an agenda. Wait until you are in your 60s, then check it out.
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Gotta say, apart from some quite nice cinematography I found this really meh. Sussed what the deal was half way through and was then just waiting for it to end and the conclusion wasn't very satisfying either.

Stepford Wives
did it much better.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Streaming at home: Dick Dale and the Deltones!

Slot cars!: You don’t put bourbon in it or nothin’?
Batusi? Trophy!: Drinks! Music! I’m going to take a piss!
Five long years he had this watch up his ass!: Give me one of those cigarettes you’ve got and I’ll tell you all about it!
Buenas Noches, Butch!
Kangaroo! Pop Tarts!: That’s how you’re going to beat them, Butch!
Maynard => Grace!
I’m 30 minutes away and I’ll be there in 10!: I’m a race car and I am in the red!
A moment of clarity!: Modesty Blaise!
Three little Fonzies!: You are the weak, and I am the tyranny of evil!
What if there were an alternate universe composed entirely of plots and of characters and of scenes from old Hollywood movies? What if you called it Hollywood Land and made a movie called Pulp Fiction about its most despicable characters? What would you have? A Mean Spirited Movie! My kind of movie! Fan fiction at its finest!
I saw it when it came out and I streamed it today and my opinion of it has not changed a bit! Use headphones and blast it! Check it out!
Friendship (2025) is brilliant. Funniest film of the past decade.
Uh, I left MI: Final Reckoning thinking there were no crazy stunts, because I assumed all the hanging off a plane and wing walking stuff was too insanely dangerous to be real. Stupid me. Maybe it's the Scientology driving him, as that is some insane dedication to the craft.
Even by the standards of this franchise, the plot is overblown, ludicrous, and basically a series of MacGuffins. Half the scenes seem to be an excuse for Cruise to show off what a ripped bod he has at 62.

Darned if that isn't a helluva an idea for a flick ... notorious Hollywood types all throughout. Why not "Pulp Hollywood" by Tarantino?
This could be a Pip...
Its impossible to replace

That preview seems to be a big departure for Aronofsky...
Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning
Good fun and a nice end to the Cruise-led franchise. It's utterly ludicrous, but then, aren't all the MI missions?
Some incredible set-pieces that are only lessened by their familiarity to previous MI movies like Fallout. The big weakness is Esai Morales' bad guy Gabriel, which was the same in the last movie. Still don't understand his motivation beyond "world domination," I guess.
But I loved the whole franchise from beginning to end (except 2), and it was really cool for this one to bring back great character actor Rolf Saxon as the CIA guy whose office was famously breached by Ethan Hunt in the very first MI movie and was subsequently assigned to the remote Arctic. He's got a big role in this one!
And I love how they use famous faces for small but critical roles like Angela Bassett, Nick Offerman, Janet McTeer, Holt McCallany, Mark Gattis, Hannah Waddington, Tramell Tillman, and Shea Wigham.
But man, the Russian sub sequence and the bi-plane chase were both incredibly tense.
I think the last two films both suffered some from trying to top Fallout (good luck with that), and it might've ben a better move to go smaller instead of bigger, but these movies are still pure, popcorn fun. And Haley Atwell might not be Rebecca Ferguson, but then who is?
lol and if you post a review on Letterboxd for MI: The Final Reckoning, you get a fun little easter egg.
Let me guess... its not actually the final Reckoning
Mmmmmm....Rebecca Ferguson.

I always felt this way. I was hoping Cruse would stay in his man cave and macgyver all the solutions remotely. a young Scarlet Johansson could be his girl Friday.
Hanna and Her Sisters
One of Woody Allen's best films. I love the bit when he decides he should be a Catholic and brings home religious iconography, a loaf of Wonder Bread, and a jar of mayonnaise.
Also when he questions belief in God, asking his father why Nazis exist. His father responds with What do I know about Nazis? I can't figure out how to use the can opener.
