It's definitely not as bad as sports. There were elite scientists and mathematicians doing finance since the 80s. There has been slow steady progress on the theory side and obviously massive computer hardware fueled advances that would not be possible with state of the art stuff in the 90s. Sports sort of tops out. Don't think you're constantly pushing the limits of hardware and algorithm run times in sports.

How did this become a political issue for Republicans? I don't really think of those things as party issues, but if anything I would have expected those measures to more likely be supported by Democrats.

It is common, and has contributed to both the suburban sprawl in many metro areas, and to the housing shortage in the biggest west coast cities.

Stuff like single family home zoning was written as a way to keep segregation after it became illegal to do it outright snd above the table. But now it’s just making building more difficult and expensive and also not really helping keeping minorities out.

I honestly don't know, but I suspect that corporations buying up homes contributes more to the housing shortage than anything else. I'd like to see the stats on how ownership has changed through the years.

I live in a suburb of a big west coast city. There is a big city owned empty lot connected to the local grade school next to my house. I guess the city is investigating selling the to private developers. And my neighborhood has already banded together to try to block this, doing meetings and stuff.

And this is a fairly "blue" upper middle class area. In a couple weeks pride flags will be flying above every third house. But new building is just crossing a red line, especially if there is a risk it might be high density housing that might mess with our safety and house prices.

As someone who bought recently and has (probably too much) personal wealth equity tied up into my house, I can certainly empathize with this sentiment.

For goor or bad, the US has a social covenant that Euros just dont really understand. We are extremely permissive of our governments insistence that we facilitate tremendous levels of destructive, antisocial behavior among the lowest classes of society (drugs, crime, filth, violence); but only on the condition that the rest of us can build communities to insulate ourselves and our kids from this behavior. And this is done in part through zoning laws and making it extremely expensive to live in said communities.

And if you are upper middle class (or higher) and you want to live in the middle of the madness, you still can. There is plenty of expensive high density housing in cities like NY, Los Angles, Chicago, etc. Where you can send your kids to heavy security private schools or quasi private magnet/charger schools. Many Americans just choose not to do this.

I lived in Austin where there was pretty strict zoning. I bitched about it back then, but looking back I don't think I hate it. It keeps some schmuck from building something other than a home next door to you. I kinda like that.

Airbnb had changed my outlook on the whole thing. I had one above a condo I lived in and one next door to a house I lived in. It was beyond horrible. I'm fine with the gubberment restricting land use and I really wish it was even stricter for short term rentals.
