President Donald Trump
I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?
So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at
Tax religion!
I don't think the idea of NEA grants is for rich states to subsidize the arts in poor states. I think the idea is to subsidize the arts throughout the country. Generally speaking, I don't think that funnelling money through the states would do much to solve what lagtight perceives as the problem. If you think that the NEA is subsidizing some sort of art in California that yo
I think crossnerd problem would be easier to fix if it was decided locally.
I think donations should never be deductable from income taxes. But taxes should be much lower and only fund what is *indispensable* for the survival and existence of the state.
HAving higher than necessary taxation, but with loopholes to deduct when you use the money "in the right way", just gives power to the disgusting paper pushers who write the budget
The first grant listed was for $20,000 for a "performance piece" in San Francisco(!).
San Francisco is one of the richest cities in the country and is well known for its thriving arts community. Are you suggesting that a rich city like San Francisco can't find even 200 donors at $100 each? This is silly imo.
Who do you think finds these donors? That is a salaried full-time position on staff, and their job is exceedingly difficult. It’s not actually that easy to get a lot of people to donate to the arts, which is why every performing arts center practically throws them an honorary parade at the end of each season. We let our top donor conduct the orchestra for one piece of the end of season concert. (I still don’t know if he knows that our conductor is actually behind a curtain and we’re following him, not the donor…)
But no, it’s not that simple. If it were, every major theatre and music company in the country wouldn’t be struggling right now.

Id be curious how much that position pays for. Things like this are great but need funded privately.
I don't think who does or doesn't get funding should be predicated on what my opinion of good art is.
If San Diego wants to have some "performance piece" that I find objectionable, at least the folks in San Diego should be the one's paying for it imo. It's really none of my business. That's up to the taxpayers in San Diego.
Taking it down to the municipality level doesn't seem local enough. We probably should solve the problem at the individual city block level. I certainly don't want my tax dollars going to some community theater that is three streets over from my house.
It's an abuse of the subsidiarity concept. Subsidiarity is about not having overriding authority. It doesn't mean funding can't be offered.
An analogy with families is that parents are the ones who decide on a child's phone but that doesn't mean the grandparants can't help fund a phone that the parents are happy with.

In my opinion the Income Tax itself is problematic.
A National Sales Tax would be less problematic in my opinion.
(Mike Huckabee once proposed what he called the "Fair Tax" which was a National Sales Tax, but low-income folks would get a full or partial rebate on their Sales Tax paid during the previous year.)

Sounds like a great idea to me. Thanks for introducing that option which I hadn't considered.
It pays significantly less than the same job in other industries. Nobody is doing music full time to get wealthy; we’re doing it because we love it and believe in its societal value.
I love music and believe it has societal value as well. But it doesn't necessarily follow from that that the federal government should have anything to do with its funding.

I don't see how your parents/grandparents analogy is helpful.

i suppose this is ironic but yes that's how it should be for some stuff.
that's what brought you the palio di Siena, a competition among neighborhoods.
but piazza del Campo has to be maintained by the municipality.
and the carnival of Rio ofc, with each neighborhood financing it's team.
but the sambodromo has to be maintained by the municipality.
and the condo swimming pool is financed only by... the owners of the condo building.
but water pipes serving the city have to be managed at the city level.
it's like for every specific thing you can, given enough time and wisdom, realize (sometimes through trial and error) the unit size , but the idea is that what's going to work best is the smallest unit size that can work

What would be the end result and advantages ?
people would still end up paying and government still needs money one way or the other shrug .
The stupids can't understand that the libtards they hate so much have their best interests in mind far more than the grifter they grovel to.

how is joe normie interest furthered by:
1) increasing the tax on gasoline (which is what a lot of liberal states do)
2) pay for illegals healthcare (which is what some liberal states do)
3) having higher sales taxes (which is what liberal states usually have)
4) dumbing down school curricula to "decolonize" them (which is what many liberal states do)
how is joe normie (when white or asian) interest furthered by:
1) targeted public money directed to further minority groups outcomes
2) explicit and implicit discrimination against whites (positive discrimination of some minorities) in public hiring and college admissions
how were joe normie interests furthered recently during covid by:
1) mandating masks to his toddler children
2) mandating covid vaccination to them even if healthy young adults
3) canceling student loans to people who had them if they hadn't
