But seriously, I could have sworn there was such a procedure as you describe, but I could also see it being a low-priority item for law enforcement or whatever government agency supervises such a court order. Even while reading this thread, I did a quick Google search. This result came from the local law library, or at least local to where I'm sitting right now:

What I now wonder is whether or not someone gets issued a court order to comply with a court order. Then if that doesn't happen, a court order to enforce a court order to comply with a court order. And so on and so on...

It would be LESS low-priority if the court was getting a cut of the money.

The sad part is you win a lawsuit - great, now you have to collect which is a whole other ordeal. If he owns a home you can lien the property - if he doesn't then you're basically screwed. Even if he does own a home you can lien the property but can't collect from it until the house goes to sell if ever, forcing them to clear the title.

Idk what‘s going on the us, but in my country (Austria) it‘s quite easy to collect debts.
You sue somebody for amount X and the party can object against it. You meet in court and settle the case and normally for a payment plan. If the sued party is late on payment then there‘s a penalty moneywise and if they can‘t pay or are not willing to pay the prosecutor collects the salary directly from the employer. If this doesn’t help, the prosecutor comes to their home and collects stuff.

Yeh if that person works in the US you can garnish their wages but a guy like this works for himself and probably doesn't even own property. If you don't own property you can't lien it - you're basically screwed.

The story about Brad Rudderman, and how some of his losses were recouped in bankruptcy court, gives me pause. Way back when I won quite a bit against him in a game much larger than he's used to playing, but he was super splashy, had positive energy and took losses like a champ. So I give him credit where credit is due.

The issue is that each state has their own laws that determine what you can and can't garnish, if certain income or property is protected from being used to pay off judgments, etc.

So you need to navigate the methods of your particular state after you've obtained a judgment to collect on it, including liens, garnishments, etc.

Of course, with someone like Maurice who doesn't have a traditional job, getting a wage garnishment (which may or may not be available in whatever state this is in, or may be limited/restricted in scope to only a certain percentage of wages, etc) is going to be difficult.

I believe when Ivey lost his case against a Casino it was able to snatch on to some of his tournament scores, but I don't recall the full details of that, and it may have been limited to some locations but not all. And of course it also requires the person holding the judgment actively pursuing these remedies to recoup their money.

I'm not sure what totals Maurice owes to which individuals, but it appears whatever those totals are, they haven't been enough for anyone to go mob style on him and initiate acts of violence.

He likely targets people he expects will not go that route, and perhaps for sums of money on an individual basis that aren't worth it to those individuals to pursue violence.

That being said, he's also had some big scores where backers have claimed they should've received a cut, which could push someone over that edge eventually as he has proven himself to be a strong player capable of taking down some big wins in the mid-level circuit events.

But looking at people like Russ Hamilton, Howard Lederer, etc. who all ran off with much larger sums from many more people, they've managed to live their lives free of true justice and retribution that the poker world loves to fantasize about.

So most likely, we'll just be repeating these discussions in the future while Maurice continues to be a scumbag and people continue to back him, hoping their the exception and actually get their cut when he does well.

Collecting yes. If you are trying to hurt the scum forgive the debt and send the IRS the proper form and it becomes taxable income. IRS plays with different rules.
