It's very interesting and it says something about you that your response to this is pointing out specific policies of elites that are unscientific and demonstrably counter-productive even after a cursory glance at evidence rather than any social commentary about the distinction between experts/elites and how they are both socialized and responded to differently. Having had a bit more time to digest and think about this: I don't fit in with this employer because my own training and education was way more heavily focused on becoming an expert rather than becoming an elite. This place is trying to do the opposite. Every school I've worked for prior to this focused on experts over elites, with the previous one taking this to almost comical extremes to where things like art/music/sport were ignored entirely. Granted, if you can't meet the basic academic standards of acceptable grades on CIE exams, your amazing socialization of prospective elites/children of elites is worth very little. But to their credit, this school does an amazing job at translating elite white culture to elite Chinese. I'm just not sure the customer was even asking for this or could implicitly distinguish between differences in education between the two categories.

Another involuntary gut response I had: This distinction between elite and expert is one of the many things I wish I would have known as a teenager as it would have radically altered how I lived my life. It was implicit knowledge for many people from higher socio-economic backgrounds, but these were things my own family and extended family were just oblivious to. I feel like I was just so oblivious in general to how social status works in human societies and thought the only hierarchy was based on "competence", which single mother raised teenage me assumed was just a function of deference to authority figures and compliance with what people in your school system wanted you to do.

My head of high school application would have never been considered if the school didn't kinda need an "expert" as opposed to an "elite" for the position due to such dire circumstances.

Elite: MBA from a school everyday average people have heard of and implicitly respect. Few technical skills, immense pedigree and probably crushes the job market.

Expert: Master's program in econ and mathematical finance at a niche largely unknown university that is only ranked highly for that specific masters that nobody has even heard of. Narrow range of technical skills for a handful of specific purposes.

The expert/elite spectrum is an interesting thought problem, but I don't think it is really useful in creating useful life heuristics or frameworks for decision making beyond what is readily apparent to people with atleast average intelligence.

I thought it would be fairly interesting to point out situations where elites have essentially taken a random stance on issues that are reasonably well solved regarding pets or banal public health issues and point out how Yurop is just as backward ass and anti-science as the rest of the world, despite their best efforts to pretend otherwise. Some elites may be more or less truth seeking than others, but when we look at people we recognize as notably "anti-science" in leadership positions it may just be happenstance of their coalition building. I wouldn't consider all of Yurop scientifically backward, but somehow they have a variety of policies that make zero sense when considered from the context of "what would experts in this field say". Then again there are other issues where a scientific argument is used as a smokescreen for other end goals. (IE the health risks of chlorine bathing chicken vs the obvious economic benefits of keeping Tyson tendies off the Euro market)

Another relevant example of the elite/expert issue is at tech companies. There are a handful of ICs globally that receive the compensation of a big tech VP. But the IC is almost always one of the foremost experts in their specific field, while every tech company has dozens of VPs (or more). Surely we can't believe that random Jimmy the VP is worth as much as the world's foremost expert on newSQL databases at Gewgle? But somehow Jimmy has not just convinced all the other elites, but all of the experts as well. Maybe I'll mull this idea over a bit more as I go for a walk. But it seems vastly more interesting to reflect on various aspects of life where this is readily apparent than anything else.

This is a big difference between the incelosphere of the west where they (often correctly) internalize the problem. "Women's true selection criteria are skull shape/facial features, height, and race. Mobile technology has just reduced face to face interaction and the romantic unions produced by it seem less stable and strong by definition of increasing the optionality of both parties. Even beyond dating apps, just having more digital interaction and more time spent in the online as opposed to the real world reduces in person socialization overall, moves status games we play IRL online in what appear to be very destructive and mentally unhealthy ways, and cause just way less formation of romantic unions and pair bonds. 2. Urbanization, population density and living in high rises. It's probably something deep in our animalistic brains that just kills the urge to reproduce when we are packed in like sardines. 3. High levels of income inequality.

Beyond that, it's really quite an individualistic problem with respect to each country. The things that drive fertility collapse in North Korea are completely separate to what drives fertility collapse in Italy overall.

A few more notes: I'm an educator. I've watched several friends who were kindergarten teachers lose their jobs and watch their employers shut down because of low enrollment because there just weren't as many people being born 3-5 years ago as we'd hoped. I'd be blind to say this won't affect me in another decade when suddenly the number of high school kids is 3/4th of what it was today. What will this do to demand for people in my profession, salaries, and job opportunities? Could this potentially get me to expediate a transition into a fitness related career? The more unfavorable dating market conditions are, the less babies being born. I need those babies to be born now to have continued employment in 15 years. My experience only "counts" in places like the middle east, African continent Myanmar, China... it is largely worthless in the most desirable places to live like Thailand, Latin America, or Switzerland.

I don't interact with the gacha elements and just liked playing a well written and fun single player turn based rpg.

I'm onto Clair Obscur Expedition 33 (single player, no gacha) and it is one of the most interesting turn based RPGs I've ever played.

Few thoughts:

1) I recently came across something about folks who are white supremacist adjacent. This would describe folks like Guy or me, which I found abjectly funny since despite society likely functioning better if we moved back to OG democracy (land owning white males), I believe both of us should actually have a voice in society. It was a weird mix of paternalism and cognitive dissonance that we are unable to think for ourselves and can't accept that my similarities to rich yuppie white people are vastly greater than to the poor black people in the ghetto.
2) A lack of integration is a real problem. I'll likely never learn the local language to a passable level, but is that actually integration? Can the townies ever really fit in with the mainstream educated urban culture? When you're visibly a member of "not here" what are the limits to societal integration especially when it comprises an ethno nationalist component?
3) The urbanism thing is pretty wild. I live in a walkable pedestrian area, I ride public transit and I plan to leave cause it kinda blows ass. There is a theater nearby that hosts world class companies/troupes or whatever its called. Never went. Probably never will. In a weird twist, when I actually interacted with a bunch of the "elites" who ranted about the benefits of 15min cities, shockingly none of them actually live in anything approximating a 15min city, despite there being a variety of places where this is achievable. That said, there's dozens of pages of just my own posts on the subject in just the past few months, and they are often disorganized stream of consciousness Finnegan's Wake gibberish. Your interpretation is completely wrong. Men age out of the sexual marketplace much more slowly than women; a shrinking population means fertile aged women represent a much smaller % of the population. The problem then becomes self reinforcing. Historically, men died earlier and often due to war, less safe working conditions, violent crime, etc. Modernity has profoundly improved human flourishing in many ways, but combined with low birth rates, fertile aged women represent a diminishingly smaller % of the population overall, leading to sky high "implicit" (or sometimes explicit) prices in marriage and sexual marketplaces in which an increasingly large % of men do not meet the minimum threshold. The main "thesis" that got me to finally stop blaming feminism was that this increased scarcity is ultimately more responsible for female advantage and societal changes than changes in the legal system, technology, or culture. And this is evidenced by Japan/Korea where there's relatively little political feminism or even active cultural patriarchy, yet they're facing the same or even more severe gender hostility and mutual romantic frustration. So no "back in the kitchen, roll back DEI" is a troll rather than any real solution.

Why is this important for China and ww3 risk: You have the above problems compounded with 35 million surplus males in the marriageable age range. You have a much stronger cultural pressure toward marriage and having kids to "carry on the family legacy" (Mike Tyson would be disgusted). You have a population prone to nationalism, pride, and saving face. You have an unfinished civil war (sorry, western media lied. Taiwan isn't a country exactly). You have changes in the structure of government going back to around 2017-18 that has made the country less of a "totalitarianism but with checks and balances" system to a "autocratic dictatorship" system, removing a lot of the intertia and potential internal resistance to a Taiwan invasion. You have a collapsing housing market and potentially very hard to fix structural macroeconomic problems. You have a relatively more nationalistic leader in charge who is around 70 years old and the clock is ticking on him "leaving a legacy" as the glorious leader who finally had the strength to reuinfy the mainland and Taiwan by force.

If men in this country were doing something they gave a **** about, could see their material well being increasing over time, had somebody to stick their dick into, and had kids to provide for and hope that these offspring would inherit a more prosperous future, it would be impossible to convince them to go storm the beaches of Taiwan, especially given that even a very dumb person realizes that casualties from both an initial invasion and starvation across the mainland would be in the hundreds of millions. But when they have nothing to hope for, no wives, kinda shitty upward mobility, a broken social contract on education moving one into the middle class and gaining social status, western foreigners both in their country and overseas being much more popular with their women than they are (in their perception, in reality... maybe not on average, once income and height are controlled for), and a fairly effective media machine reinforcing what they already believe about westerners, and convincing them to go to war over Taiwan becomes much easier. Macroeconomic conditions turning very negative, income/wealth inequality, a perception of low economic mobility, and low trust in government and institutions rationally predict protests and revolutions. But if you can mobilize the population toward a foreign enemy (America and Co conspiring with separatists forces in Taiwan to humiliate the Chinese nation), you can redirect that energy toward something more "productive" (from the perspective of government and the elites).

Biden said in very clear terms he would support Taiwan in the event of an invasion. This would cause a high probability of WWIII. Much more likely than it initiating over Ukraine/Russia due to Ukraine relatively much lower strategic and economic importance to the world economy. I'm unsure what trump's position is or if it even matters because it's likely that enough of the US government would figure out a way to start a war and get involved.

These things are incredibly obvious to me which is why my initial post was more vague and coded. Technically I should probably refrain from posting it in such explicit terms, but I realize a typical British guy is not going to be plugged into the America/China geopolitical situation.

That said, I more or less agree that mainland China's claim to Taiwan is legitimate. The place has never formally declared independence and this is an unfinished civil war from 75~ years ago. The USA should absolutely stay out of this and suffer a few years/a decade of much lower semiconductor output. That's exactly why they're building a TSMC factory in my home state...
