President Donald Trump
I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?
So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at
Non-profit doesn't mean an organization makes no money. It means that "profits" aren't distributed to owners (in fact there are no owners) but are retained by the organization as an increase to net assets. Not making a "profit" is a sure way for an organization to fail.
I thought what you were describing here is "not for profit". I read something distinguishing the two and it seems like what was said there, though it is a bit vague.
I was wondering about the possible benefits of being a tax exempt non-profit, which I had never thought of before. If a company makes no profits, wouldn't it owe no taxes anyway? I guess they could be exempted from property taxes, but those are paid on a local level, so I don't know why the federal government would control that.
it's about you being allowed to donate to them and deduct that from your income before paying taxes.
they get funded by gross income not by net income.
that's a fiscal cost, which the state pays because of a purported positive externality generated by the entity you are donating to.
so the state generically has a right to determine what constitutes a positive externality for which the state is willing to give up income tax receipts.
that is done with legislation usually, with the executive enforcing the legislation. the legislation is horrendously complicated as most fiscal matters usually are in the USA and elsewhere and it has room for value-judgementa related to provisions that limit the amount of political speech allowed by those entities.
ofc opinions can vary and ofc then courts have the last call
Narrator: he does not get tired of not knowing what he's talking about.
There are many types of non profits that aren't 501(c)3 organizations. Do you ever get tired of not knowing what you are talking about.
jfc we are talking about wiki aren't we? and we are talking about the gvmnt trying to remove that fiscal privilege from wiki not something else.
chillrob wasn't probably aware of this given he was thinking in terms of imagining fiscal benefits related to profits made by wiki

I don't think chillrob's question was was about Wikipedia specifically, but if it was, you are still wrong. Non profit status is about whether or not the organization pays income tax.

no, they specifically have very clear barriers to entry with very clear things they can’t do with their tax exempt status to ensure the government isn’t abusing tax exemption to skirt around the first amendment.
we don’t in fact want the government to decide what does or does not promote social welfare by using tax exemption as a cudgel.

the purposes are different, so you just have to be clear about what your purpose is. for a for-profit business, being able to make profits and divide them among the shareholders and members is a good thing. for a nonprofit, that’s not allowed to happen so they are easier to pass from one set of stakeholders to another without worrying about their mission being compromised, since no one that joins is able to directly benefit from revenue generated.
Also just as a point of clarification, who exactly ever in the history of anything said that nonprofits have to be unbiased? In fact being unbiased about topics is usually completely against their mission statements and their reasons for forming. Wikipedia may say they are attempting to add certain things to remove bias, but they will always have certain biases that can’t be re
Yeah, stuff like the Discovery Institue that pushes intelligent design nonsense is a nonprofit ans is pretty explicit about their bias. Meanwhile, wikiepedia has 10s of thousands of articles like this on SO(3) that is completely correct, well written and pretty much the only place a rural or someone else in a low education/performance culture could easily access such a readable intro to an algebra topic. Of course that in itself is probably a negative for conservatives as that kind of basic learning just makes you more likely to not be a conservative.

apparently the cockwomble went into one about this, and ordered an investigation into why the polls were so low.
Profound lack of self-awareness, as usual.
It’s not that he doesn’t know how unpopular his regime is. It’s that he’s using bullying tactics to try to shut down negative reporting and polling.

Governor J.B. Pritzker yesterday:
He called on Democrats to “stop wondering if you can trust the nuclear codes to people who don’t know how to organize a group chat. It’s time to stop ignoring the hypocrisy in wearing a big gold cross while announcing the defunding of children’s cancer research. And time to stop thinking we can reason or negotiate with a madman. Time to stop apologizing when we were NOT wrong. Time to stop surrendering, when we need to fight.
“Our small businesses don’t deserve to be bankrupted by unsustainable tariffs. Our retirees don’t deserve to be left destitute by a Social Security Administration decimated by Elon Musk. Our citizens don’t deserve to lose healthcare coverage because Republicans want to hand a tax cut to billionaires. Our federal workers don’t deserve to have, well, a 19-year-old DOGE bro called Big Balls destroy their careers.
“Autistic kids and adults who are loving contributors to our society don’t deserve to be stigmatized by a weird nepo baby who once stashed a dead bear in the backseat of his car.
“Our military servicemembers don’t deserve to be told by a washed up Fox TV commentator, who drank too much and committed sexual assault before being appointed Secretary of Defense, that they can’t serve this country simply because they’re Black or gay or a woman.
“And If it sounds like I’m becoming contemptuous of Donald Trump and the people that he has elevated, it’s because... I am. You should be too. They are an affront to every value this country was founded upon.”
Pritzker called on Democrats to be “bold and our ideas fearless…. And we must deliver on that agenda for working families and for the real people who truly make America great.”
“I understand the tendency to give in to despair right now,” he said, “But despair is an indulgence that we cannot afford in the times upon which history turns. Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now.
“These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace. They have to understand that we will fight their cruelty with every megaphone and microphone that we have. We must castigate them on the soap box, and then punish them at the ballot box. They must feel in their bones that when we survive this shameful episode of American history with our democracy intact—because we have no alternative but to do just that—that we will relegate their portraits to the museum halls reserved for tyrants and traitors.”

trump keeps the dream live. He is already pushing us in the right direction. Currently spineless starmer thinks he can deal with the orange one but hopefuly trump will do his stuff.
Shame we haven't time for an election for trump to help with like he has in canada
Someone tell the White House that Bezos hasn't run Amazon for a few years:
If the bond market doesn't bring Trump to heal, messing with Amazon Prime pricing and delivery times just might.
Trump's already been brought to heel - unless his amazing 4-D chess strat is fooling everyone.

To put the video in perspective, we should probably compare the ports during "normal traffic". Let us for simplicity's sake ignore bulk traffic and only focus on container traffic, which is easier to count:
Some quick research said that Shanghai was the world's busiest container port in the world and Los Angeles the 17th busiest, measured with of 49 million TEUs and 8,6 million TEUs ("twenty-foot equivalent units", referring to containers). Long Beach port has a similar number as Los Angeles port, and since they are so close together and both shown in the video, we should probably count them together for a total of 16.6 million TEUs (combined they are about the 9th busiest total in the world).
If we then also ignore average differences in ship types, we'd expect Shanghai to have about 3 times the traffic of the two ports shown in the video during "business as normal".
I also checked a maritime traffic website to compare the ports, and due to my geographical location the time in LA / Long Beach was early morning and the time in Shanghai was late evening - which should be comparable. The traffic monitoring showed about the same differences as was shown in the linked video.
The remaining question is of course to what degree these ports are more or less exposed to traffic affected by tariffs, which I haven't looked into.
I don't know if the purpose of this post was about anything other than me learning some stuff, but I thought I'd share anyway.
One good thing Trump has done has been to get Canada back on the correct track.
