Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Good taste is (to a point) good taste, whether it’s movies, food, art, you name it...
I think of having 'Good Taste' is having a level of sophistication, education and experience.
I dont think it is really possible to just 'buy' your way into having good taste... that description is just a cultural appropriation. 'Good Taste' is independent of financial wherewithal
Good taste is an appreciation for the finer details thru comprehension and experiential perspectives.
It's kind of like the way when an observer passes judgement on someone that constantly uses proper 'Manners' in public... the lessor view is to think that the person is just trying to elevate themselves by acting in a sophisticated method... When in all actuality, using 'Good Manners' in public is a way of showing RESPECT FOR OTHERS.

Not really. It is mainly seen through a typical liberal academics prism - which I also studied in - and not really accessible for your common movie-goer. Which is fine. And something I accepted years ago. But let's be honest about the nature of this thread.

Marvel films crop up in this thread, so do foreign language artsy ones. If there's more focus on the less mainstream films, that's because there's plenty of other places to talk about the blockbusters.
no it wasn't...it was a lot of fun. BP2 was terrible, I'll give you that.

I think most of us here have pretty diverse tastes in films. Is it possible to like or appreciate Satantango and When Harry Met Sally, City Lights and Three Colors: Blue (even Derek Jarmon's Blue), Bringing Up Baby and La Region Centrale, Bad Santa and It's a Wonderful Life (to name two Christmas movies)?
Maybe we avoid a film because it gets a bad review here, but we might also see films we never would have if it were not for a great review here.
I don't think you're a film snob, Dom. I don't think I am either, even if some of you might disagree.

I want to see it too, especially since I live in RI. The story reminded me of high school when we moved from an old building into a new one. I found a narrow passageway behind the boy's bathroom that led to a space no one knew about where we could smoke pot without being detected by anyone. Never got caught.

I think film snobs are basically pretentious douchebags. But I know what I like and know what I hate. So I can filter through this thread pretty well. I love movies and watch as many as I can. I especially love older movies and movie history. I love reading the thoughts of all posters on this forum. Most likely consider me a lowbrow movie watcher rather than a sophisticated film viewer. Thats cool with me 😀
And I don't think there are lots of film snobs here. Remember that guy Clovis that used to post here? He's been gone for a while but he is one I would put in the pretentious douchebag category. Most here are movie lovers like me even if our tastes differ. Plus I win every movie draft. Look it up!

Good post, John (except the signature bit). Seems as if I heard an interview with Roger Ebert many years ago. When asked why their review show was so popular, he said that he thought it was because they tried to review a movie within the context of what it was trying to be.
So, something that might not be a great movie from a technical standpoint, for example, still might get a thumbs-up because it succeeded at being a good action flick (or whatever).
agree bp2 was worse - couldn't even finish it

How about a movie review! Last night I watched the recent Companion (Max). Ehhhh. It was a fantastic premise but for whatever reason I don't feel it really delivered. Not sure why? I don't want to give any spoilers here because its best if you go in clueless. It had its moments but was basically disappointing.
I just saw Eephus (2025). I would guess that you have to be familiar with American recreational baseball play to really enioy this movie. Which I am and I did. It chock full of baseball jargon, colloquialisms, vernacular, humor, and lore. Two aging middle-aged recreational baseball teams, somewhere in New England, play the last game of the season and probably the last one of their lives. They know that the field that they have regularly played on for years is being demolished the next day by the park service and not to be replaced. The movie consists of the events and conversations they have with each other during the entire game. In that way they reveal some of their personal lives. The legendary MLB pro player, Bill "Spaceman" Lee makes an appearance as a relief pitcher at the age of about 77 . He is famous for his version of the marvelous Eephus pitch which baffled some of the greatest hitters. It may have got its name from a hebrew word (eef us) meaning "zero". The pitch is a "nothing" ball. Not a lot of dramatic events happen in this slice of Americana movie. It is just insight into how you might act with your best buddies when you know that a favorite pastime in your life is ending forever for you.

It means exactly what it means ; it would be the equivalent as stating that the poker world is full of ego. Now you could also dismiss the latter as also being an empty statement if you wish, but I have spent enough time in the the liberal arts world and the poker world to have an informed perspective on both. Regarding movie "snobby' level talk, I appreciate the group. Wish I had the direct quote, but Amy Nicholson is a writer I looked up to a great deal when I got into writing/podcasting and in an article she mentioned that to become a better writer, young people should increase their life experiences. Put yourself out there, meet people, fall in love, get hurt, find a new profession, apply for a job promotion, expand your appreciation of art by watching a variety of movies, etc. That resonated so deeply with me. When I revisit older movies that I haven't seen since early adulthood it's a completely new experience for me. I love that so much.
As much as I love watching French arthouse films, I also enjoy dumb **** like Michael Bay movies. I understand they're dumb. I understand they're for knuckleheads like me, but I'll keep watching them if he keeps making them. I went on a recent Michael Bay kick just to test out whether I've outgrown them. NOPE. Still love em
