There isn't a single Leftist or progressive in the entire Democratic party in congress. Bernie and AOC and the like are not Leftists so don't feed me them. No one who votes to give weapons to Israel is a Leftist or anywhere close to Left on the political spectrum. On the material issues of war, healthcare, and the levers and gears you need to keep our government accountable to the majority, there is no real difference between AOC, Pelosi, and Lindsey Graham.
Many people are trying to erect a third party. The Democrats, who just let Trump do whatever he wants like they are a Down Syndrome summer camp, have no lack of imagination or agency when it comes to destroying 3rd parties. It's nasty.

It’s actually a very contentious issue between more pragmatic people and more idealistic people.

what proto, fascism is something that requires modern state capacity, it is not synonymous nor analogous to just authoritarianism. All stripes of ideology slaughtered people.
No i am not in favour of a leader slaughtering his own citizens, i am not a collectivist, there is no "us" to lead to glory no matter how you want to define glory.
You need collectivism even to have the basis to start thinking of the people of a cohesive unit to be led to goals or outcomes. Ie you need your own ideology, which inevitably ends in large lakes of blood every time.
Only by putting the individual above the collective as the only source of inherent value, disregarding the notion and "us" can exist , be defined, and its welfare used as the outcome for policy, you can try to avoid massive bloodshed.
As long as you defend any form of collectivism the slaughtering of masses of innocent is the inevitable outcome, you just have to hope is other innocents and not your own specific group.
And fascism is just one of many thousands of variants of the same theme, while individualism and a denial of collectivism is a rare thing that happened very sparingly because only special, superior individuals can reject collectivism and trascend that specific natural pulsion which is the main source of moral horrors throughout history

Yeah the whole moral panic over DEI is heavily muted by how unqualified and just plain bad so many of these conservatives are for and at their jobs. There was some National Review editor I heard on NPR who practically in the same sentence went from bashing Harvard for DEI hiring then switching over to complaining about how Harvard is not doing enough to seek out and promote culturally conservative faculty members. That the only qualified particle physicists based on merit are anti right wing is suddenly not acceptable. Clearly there is some implicit bias either at Harvard or in the particle physics community working against conservatives that we must actively work to correct!!

Defense contracting is dirty AF, the companies suck, the industry sucks, and people probably die all the time because of how much it sucks. No argument there.
Doesn’t make it ok to give Elon billions to make a vapor ware “Golden Dome” that he will then RENT to American gov or Thiel access to literally ever tax payers personal info for god knows what reason.
