The "LOLCANADA" thread...again

So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

Another page from Trump's playbook: ignoring the courts. Poilievre is being shockingly irresponsible here. He is pledging a first-ever-use of a prime minister notwithstanding clause to ignore the courts on something the courts have already ruled violates our Charter. It's a sympathetic move, he wants to appear all tough on crime and allow for consecutive life sentences for multiple murderers. Easy political points, so tough on serial killers that obviously everyone is against. Except Harper tried it and the courts found it in violation. Promising to use the notwithstanding clause on this is absolutely outrageous, this is why we have courts to make legal determinations against this. Just because people might be sympathetic to the cause of being mad at serial killers doesn't mean you should overturn the courts. And its purely symbolic, such serial killers are effectively never seeing the light of day regardless of whether the possibility of getting parole after 25 years exists, it is very unlikely such people would actually get it. So a symbolic stomping on the Charter.

Trump would be proud.

That not withstanding clause works well for Quebec all the time so why not on an important issue that liberal judges will not allow
Carney is pledging tough on crime as well. Not sure how he does that Personally I would like to us bring back the death for many repeat offenders

Carney apologizes for the buttons but refuses to fire individuals involved

Very Trump like no accountability

I think I misunderstood.
Is polievre really saying he would use the notwithstanding clause ????

Yup.

Shockingly irresponsible.

Never done by a PM before.

Kind of like accumulating more debt than all the PM 's before you . Only done once

cool whataboutism bro.

A big part of why the polls are the way they are right now.

I have accepted the fact will get another Liberal Leader . As much as Quebec has a separatist party. I wouldn't blame Alberta and Saskatchewan on leaving Canada . I know most of BC would like to go as well but Vancouver will always have all the say in that province .

The Conservatives needed a Peter Mckay or Rona Ambrose to lead the party

Carney has run a great campaign doubt much of it is true but will see

I know you don't really care about engaging on this repeated claim but I do want to reassert that its not as bad as you seem to think. It's not good, but its not some huge outlier either. Here is a quick graph from the Fraser Institue, who hate Justin, that may add some needed perspective:

I mean, they should have run someone actually like Mark Carney. As in a center-right pragmatic guy who is going to work on being genuinely fiscally conservative without all the social war, anti-"woke", flippant partisan attack dog BS. Like just a kinda boring guy like harper who was going to steer Canada away from the excesses of Trudeau, cared about climate enough to do at least something.

But they gave that space to Carney who was able to take a free step to the right without hurting his popularity with the left and (hopefully - if the polls hold) will now win.

That's a good comparison longitudinally, but you can also just compare over the last 10 years where over the covid era basically every country took on a tonne of debt.

Please stop with the covid excuse he promised to balance the budget prior to COVID and in his last year he outpaced his 60 billion projection with a 100 billion than tried to buy votes with a stupid GST break costing 1.6 billion

You've just learned that
1) Compared to prior prime ministers - on a percentage basis - it isn't that big
2) Compared to other countries in the same period - it isn't that big.

And yes, COVID is a big chunk of the total debt accumulated.

You can be mad if you wish at the 2024 budget if you must, but then you should vote for Mark Carney for a realistic chance at getting it smaller as Poilievre's policies blow it up even worse like completely unfunded larger tax cuts.

U don’t seem To get why it was allowed to provinces and it’s actually not Quebec at the beginning that ask for it , for passing the new constitution to included the charter .

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_....

The clause was a compromise reached during the debate over the new constitution in the early 1980s. Among the provinces' major complaints about the Charter was that it shifted power from elected officers to the judiciary, giving the courts the final word. Section 33, along with the limitations clause, in section 1, was intended to give provincial legislators more leverage to pass law. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau at first strongly objected to the clause, but eventually consented to its inclusion under pressure from the provincial premiers.[6]

The clause was included as part of what is known as "The Kitchen Accord". At the end of a conference on the constitution that was poised to end in deadlock, Jean Chrétien, the federal justice minister, and Roy McMurtry and Roy Romanow, both provincial ministers, met in a kitchen in the Government Conference Centre in Ottawa and sowed the seeds for a deal. This compromise caused two major changes to the constitution package: the first was that the Charter would include the "notwithstanding clause", and the second was an agreed-upon amending formula. They then worked through the night with consultations from different premiers, and agreement from almost everybody. However, they excluded from the negotiations René Lévesque, the premier of Quebec. He refused to agree to the deal, and the Quebec government declined to endorse the constitutional amendment. Chrétien would later say, of the notwithstanding clause, "Canada probably wouldn't have had any Charter without it."[3]
In exchange for agreeing to the Notwithstanding Clause, Trudeau declined to remove the federal powers of disallowance and reservation from the draft Constitution.[7]

U can blame Quebec for w.e to using it but that idea wasn’t from Quebec at all , they weren’t even at the negociation table .

But keep carry on ….

Could of been worst .
You could of lived in the U.S. for the debt issue !
If it’s so bad here in Canada , Imagine there …

Fwiw .
Polievre could do something else if he really want to “help” judges to render harder decision,
just change the law about 25 years = life .
People live much older now .
I mean if we were already talking previously about increasing the age of earning our Canadian pension from 65 to 67 for example because people live longer ,
why shouldn’t we increase Prison time to 35-40 years when we condemn someone life imprisonment ?
It’s the same argument…..seem to me the life imprisonment should have more weight in being done first shrug .

But I get polievre love the attention and media punchline to try to make him look tough .

Polievre looks more like Jen than anything else …

I don’t get it .
Big amount of debts in Canada .
Probably world recession coming .
Trade war with the U.S. coming
Market in turmoil
The Canadian dollar going up in value already for couple days /week ago by itself .
Inflation keep dropping
Unemployment trending higher

Canada banque decides -> let’s make our Canadian dollar stronger by not reducing interest rates ????

Wtf am I missing ?????
Feel we’re back in 2021 , BoC making big mistakes …

Inflation still well within target boundaries and a lot of uncertainty in the air. Better to keep the powder dry.

Some good news and good optics for the USA to digest

You already forget how bad it was just last week ?
Anyway , I’m predicting it to be a big mistake .
Hope not but will see .

Ps: dry powder ?
We are still massively high compare the last 10 years +

FWIW

I was more stunt then them but seem I wasn’t the only one on the BoC inaction.
Imo the principle that if trump rolls back his tariffs everything return to normal in an instant is dead wrong .
Trump made lot more damages then what the BoC seem to acknowledge…

I blame Trudeau 😀

This visual is so awesome. They make her put on a Hijab, while they put their bare feet all over the furniture. I guess she should feel honored they deigned to speak to her at all.
