In the spirit of the books and movies threads, here's one to talk about what you're listening to lately and what you hav
believe springsteen and steely dan to be the two most popular musical acts i was never really exposed to in my life
Springsteen has been the soundtrack to my life - I liked and appreciated music before I heard him, but one summer night in 1984 there was a pause between the regular tv-programs of the Norwegian NRK (which was the only channel we had so everyone was watching) and they did something pretty unheard of in those days - instead of filling the break with the typical European cartoons (no disrespect to them, they were awesome) - they filled the pause with a music video.
It seems trivial but back then it was really monumental - we had a vcr and just having a music video play was enough for me to hit record just to eternalize such a moment.
It didn't get completely eternalized as that tape got worn out. And that would have happened even without Courtney. Probably.
Thankfully, youtube hasn't worn out yet.

I got into Springsteen thru Clarence Clemons. The 60s killed off the rock saxophone so I was really happy to see him have a gig.

Pretty sure it's Helen Forrest. Here's a song from her final album (which I had), recorded in 1983. What a voice.
My friends are amazed that I know the lyrics to these jazz standards.

I agree. It's strange to be cruising this thread and get knocked out of my socks by a song recorded in the 1940s.

That's a pretty narrow definition of love imo. For example - I love this song and there was no "challenge of dealing with another human being" involved.

I'm hooked on harmonies! I just love harmonies and there were many great ones in my 60's/70's wheelhouse. This one is particualarly interesting since it is only harmony. Just John, Paul and George singing together the entire song.
The best harmonic groups ever? Obviously Beach Boys #1.
Other greats? The Beatles (see above!), Mama And Papas, The Hollies, Crosby Stills and Nash, Simon and Garfunkle, Everly Brothers. I even dig the old school stuff like The Andrews Sisters, The Four Freshman, the Four Tops and the Four Lads (4 works!) and a huge Temptations fan. Queens Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the greatest harmonies ever.

Yeah vocal harmonies. Are there any other kind? I always thought the definition of harmony was multiple voices. The again Philharmonic Orchestras don't have any vocals at all. I can't sing for **** (anymore) but the Acapella Choir in High School was the nuts. I love the Pitch Perfect movies too!
A harmony is two or more different notes in a movement that combine to make a chord/chords... 'to harmonize '
a chord is generally three notes.
Also, a harmony is generally the main 'musical theme' within a written piece of music... however a piece of music does need a harmony or theme to be musical.
A harmony can be different than 'to harmonize'... voices, instruments and percussion can harmonize... some might even say timing can harmonize when you take into account a piece like Steven Reich's 'Piano Phase' piece.
