Poker Trips 2024 / 2025
This trip report follows on from my WSOP trip report here
GG WP. K9o with 11 bb on the Button is just about a push according to SnapShove (K2s+ and K8o+).
Not sure if this is a spot that I would have taken personally, but maybe I should to avoid entering final tables with 4.5 bb 😀
I think it's definitely a shove. Not a spot we feel awesome about...particularly when called because we're rarely getting called by worse, but buying another orbit is really important at this stage
Seems to be about as borderline as borderline gets, which to me is probably an argument for folding if we like our edge against the field.
has KTo as the worst unsuited Kx we should be shoving from the BTN for 11BB, but then we have to think that most players are not going to call wide enough against us in live MTTs, which means the spot is probably +chipEV by a thin margin. If it was a mistake, it's by a razor thin margin and nothing to dwell on too much. It’s 100 percent a shove given the table dynamics DT describes. Aggressive table has meant we’re rarely finding RFI spots, especially from the button. We have two players to get through and the 2.5 bb in the pot represents nearly a quarter of our stack. We’re never going to open/fold to a shove to leave ourselves 8.5 blinds and then pay the blinds and ante. Folding button in this spot is suicide since it’s a 5 blind swing. How often are we picking up better than K9 the rest of the way? Shove and don’t think twice. BB picks up JJ here and that’s poker.
Another great “trip” report, David. Thank you for sharing the details of these hands and your thinking. Looks like a great room down there (although how about a little padding on those chairs!), and what a structure for a $500 tournament!
I agree that the AQ hand was probably the turning point/misstep. In hindsight it’s just hard to find a hand we’re ahead of (AJ and ATs are all I’m really coming up with), so we’re definitely behind his range, and maybe we don’t want to take a flip at that point in the tournament…but maybe we DO! When he shows up with 99 in that spot and we outflop him, we’re primed for a deep run. In other words, maybe it was a crime but more a misdemeanor than a felony.
It’s impressive how well a mixed game specialist like yourself handles himself in the NL street. It seems to me as though you played exceptionally well and just got ground down by the deck…which is most of tournament poker.
Really interesting to see the feedback. Hold’em is not by best game so this helps me thanks.
The K-9 was pretty borderline but I still think it was just a shove.
Would like to invite discussion on the A-K I folded to a 3-bet that I briefly touched upon on day two.
Stacks were 80bb effective.
I open for 2 bb from late position.
Villain 3-bets to 13 bb from the small blind.
I didn’t really have any info on him at the time so I just went with my gut but after playing with him a lot more think maybe it was a mistake to fold.
What should be the play here? Call and see a flop or 4-bet?

In original post I *think* you described yourself as MP, but here you have it as LP. If it's LP, sb is probably more likely to read your open as an attempt to steal and play back at you lighter. Either way, the massive 3b sizing seems weak to me. In OP you put him on AA, KK, or QQ--and he may well have those holdings!--but I wonder if those hands will 3b so large, especially since sb has an excellent chance of getting heads up with you. I lean toward a 4b but in a vacuum, given your Spidey senses going off, I don't mind a flat since we're so deep and we have position. Folding seems like my least favorite option, but live reads are definitely a thing and need to be factored into the decision.
Thanks for the sweats both with this tournament and the WSOPC ones. As a NLH player fun to read your mixed game HHs.
On the bustout hand...taking into account ICM being ITM, K9o becomes one of our raise/folds, and we jam the offsuit Ts. The risk premium isn't huge (3-4%) when we're still a-ways from the final table, but we can have more non-all in raises with 11bbs (and even shorter) in ICM vs chipEV.
A sim I looked up in GTO Wizard at 10% of the field w/ 11bbs vs a 30bb SB and 14bb BB has us jamming 25% of hands and raising 2bbs with 11%. We jam all our offsuit Tx and better (and every offsuit Ax) and raise/fold the offsuit 9x.
Appreciate the ride alongs DT, it’s gonna be a great summer
As far as the AK hand, I think we can just flat this, being deep and IP
I would have let the A-Q hand go. I don't want to play for 1/2 my stack with AQ. I definitely push K-9 from the button with 11 BB left. I would have called with AK and seen a flop in position. I really enjoyed the TR. Well done!
Pretty nice little mix series coming up in Phoenix.
Mixed games certainly seem to be getting more popular. Seems there’s nice little series pretty much every week.
Borgata has a week coming up in May, then there’s Chainsaw’s series at Planet Hollywood and some nice mix tournaments at the Wynn ahead of the World Series starting.
I have to pick and choose because if I went to all of them I think I might run into visa problems.
I did actually look to see if there was a maximum number of days total in a year that someone can be in the States on an ESTA but couldn’t find any such number.
All it says is it’s good for multiple visits up to 90 days at a time.
If anyone knows please let me know.

It’s 180, my friend basically does two 85 day Vegas trips a year just to be on the safe side for cancellations etc.
Can your friend be all our friend? We all need more people in our lives who do multiple three month Vegas trips per year!
Right? But I don’t envy him, playing mid stakes PLO for a living must be soul crushing. His last 85 day trip all he did literally was wake up, play 12-16 hours, sleep. I love poker but there are limits haha
