I saw it earlier today, liar.

You may have seen a measles tracker.

What's temporary? 6 months or 10yrs?

Closer to 6 months. We will see countries come to the negotiating table sooner than later.

by campfirewest

Don’t know, but after Hawley Smoot tariffs it was more in the 10 year range.

Couldn't they just have sent all of the boomers one of those mork n mindy egg things instead? Totally optional :p Seems a lot easier than letting them take out their sadomasochistic fantasies on everyone for their final decade 😀

I'm just pointing out that when the numbers don't support the narrative the news agency supports they take down the ticker. Fox supports Trump but a tanking stock market is a bad look. CNN was in the 'we are all going to die from COVID' camp but when the numbers started going down they took off the ticker.

Doesn't this seem...expected? People are still occasionally dying from Covid. Do you think they should still be giving constant updates on that now?

I still have no idea why anyone thinks the system was broken, unless they just eat up anything they're told by people with an agenda. It seems to me that the system has worked pretty well for a long time, and things were going particularly well right before the presidential election.

First time in nearly 30 years, apparently

Fwiw it seems fox takes it out from time to time (multiple times a week).

here's some facts check:

can't vouch for it.

I have to repeat I'm not a fan of tweets.

Which system? If you mean the USA as a society some things were and are utterly broken compared to the American past itself.

Housing prices, obesity, and overdose deaths are the primary objective example of stuff that is going worse than ever in American history by a large margin.

Lowest ever fertility as well

Well nothing about these tariffs is going to do anything about obesity, and I don't even know what it will do about overdose deaths, even though that was the reason given to have the emergency powers. And those gave been going down anyway. Neither has anything to do with trade deficits, which seems to actually be the thing Trump is unhappy about. (And personally I cheer overdose deaths anyway).

Housing costs are mostly too high, and I suppose closing the trade deficit could lead to less housing being bought by foreign investors, although a law against owners from another country would be a better idea to fix that.

The general economy is what had been going great. Near full employment with pretty low inflation, which had been slowly dropping along with interest rates. The US hass had access to lots of inexpensive foreign made goods which would have been considered incredible luxuries 50 years ago, if they existed at all. Our health care system is too expensive and inefficient, but the expensive things are mostly new medicines and technology that didn't exist when it was more affordable.

I don't want to go back to the 1950s, or whenever these guys think America was great. And I certainly don't want to work in a dangerous factory for 40 years.

Well then you disagree on the solution (or if you are like me, you disagree the role of the state is to "fix problems"), still your objection was "why does anyone think the system is broken", i listed some reasons why someone rational who cares about those things might consider the system (ie society as it is today) broken vs the past.

Anyway yes the economy had been doing good/great *but with growing pockets of problems*.

Example, maybe you weren't aware of this

Delinquency rates for FHA mortages (these are people in worse-than-median conditions generally)

15-years high

Autoloans and credit cards delinquency rates, 15 years high

Do you now see why the disconnect between median people, and a majority, which has actually been doing good or better, and growing pockets of discontent, is actually justified by reality?

As for healthcare and what is expensive in healthcare, do you really think it's only technological cost inflation? a simple talk of 30 min with a physician grew just by inflation since 20 or 50 years ago? a bed in a nursing home?

I don't think it's technological cost inflation. Americans pay twice as much per head for healthcare compared to other Western nations because of profiteering in a commercialised system. And the 2008 global financial collapse was caused by US mortgage defaults on the part of borrowers who couldn't keep up the mortgage payments because of healthcare costs (in most cases simply prescription charges).

after Lutnick insisted the tariffs are going in without delay that was a big blow, unless something changes on that front, another bloodbath tomorrow in equities is to be expected

lol at the bold. It grew and continues to grow because of insane regulations, ofc if you don't know how much you are going to pay and you are covered for more expensive treatments... make insurances cover the cheapest treatment and everything else is out of pocket, let's see if "commercialised systems" go astray....

What makes things insane is to have private providers being paid with "other people money".

And btw we know that's true: aesthetics surgery prices where you pay everything out of pocket (you know, actual capitalism, real market, for profit) grew INSANELY LESS than the prices of stuff you consume and other people pay. I wonder why...

Simple changes in regulations would fix a lot:

example of a very easy proposal: any provider of healthcare cannot legal ask for any money if the price wasn't trasparently and expressily notified before. Simple as that. Yes keep ER out of it and deal with it in another way. Every single other price has to be 100% clearly identified and no surcharges without signature can apply ever for anything.

Then insurances cover the lowest local price for that, and the provider has to tell you covered price + surcharge out of pocket, then you choose your physician/lab/hospital for your procedure, drug, whatever.

Solved.

You seem to be under the very mistaken impression that "commercial profiteering" and "regulations" are mutually exclusive.

If providers / manufacturers / sellers are are the only ones being heard, expect a lot of "caveat emptor" and legislative hurdles that make new competition unlikely.

I am not, regulatory capture being basically always inevitable is one of the major reasons to be against regulations in general as a concept EVEN IF on paper you thought regulations could exist and be enforced to "improve" the situation according to your preferences, the fact that you have to assume everyone is corrupted and willing to always use it's legal powers to further his own interests structurally as a feature and not an unlucky event should be enough to be against any and all heavy regulatory frameworks for everything.

But you guys aren't so i am proposing second best regulations that could achieve improvements.

In my model of the world it would be *illegal* for the state to mandate anything at all at insurance companies, illegal for the state to regulate the production sale and consumptions of everything including healthcare (*insert some exception for nuclear weapons and the like if you want*).

Illegal as in "completly and trasparently forbidden in the constitution without any exception being allowed even in emergencies including war".

But the current legal framework is that you guys love, the state having almost unlimited power to regulate any minutiae of healthcare. So within that system, mandate extreme price transparency, make it illegal for anyone working at any level in the public regulatory role to ever be employed by the regulated and so on and on

How many times can Trump say he’s considering using the
U.S. military to seize Greenland before we start taking him seriously?

In short, the message was:
“Nice island you got here ... it’d be a shame if something happened to it.”

In his address to a joint session of Congress last month, Trump said, “One way or another, we’re gonna get it.”

at his news conference Friday, Vance unintentionally admitted that Trump’s ego is driving this process
