I call villians river bet and he mucks, am I in my rights to ask to see his cards?
I did pay to see them, so to speak. I have been playing for many years and have never had anyone ask, so I assume he has
Foxwoods is one of the only rooms in the US that has a rule requiring the last unmucked hand to show at showdown.
Borgata used to have this rule and it led to one of my favorite hands ever... I know I played it badly, that's not the point of the story:
2/5 UTG makes it $15
4 callers to me in the BB with 2h -3h and I call
$90 in the pot
Flop 4h-5h-x
I check orig raiser bets $75 one caller, and I call with OESF draw
$315 in the pot
Turn x (no help for me)
I check, orig raiser bets $300, other guy folds, I call.
$915 in the pot
River is another blank... I think about bluffing but decide to give up and check, villain says "You must be calling me with something" and fires his cards into the muck and I was forced to show I was playing the board.
The guy looks at my cards, looks at board and screams "F***!!!" so loud the whole room stopped, he immediately racked up and left.
You seem to have this mistaken belief that peoples' motivation for playing poker is on a continuum from "only cares about social interaction" to "only cares about winning money."
There are numerous reasons why people play live poker, some of which have nothing to do with "socializing" or "winning money."
You have mistaken what I actually believe and it is odd because I have never said anything that would lead a rational person to think how you have characterized my thinking.
In this situation I am talking about social interaction because those are the people who show cards after the hand is over, but that doesn't mean I think there are no other reasons to play poker. It is silly to think that.
Furthermore, let me blow your characterization out of the water: I think some people play for both monetary and social reasons (as well as others).
I think selectively showing your cards after the hand is over has nothing at all to do with socializing.
Had an interesting spot at the casino last night during a cash game. I called a villain’s river bet, and instead of showing, he just mucked his hand. I was awarded the pot without having to table mine. All good there—but it got me thinking: since I made the call, am I within my rights to ask to see his cards? I wasn’t trying to be rude, just curious about what he was bluffing with. Anyone know what the official rule or etiquette is around this in live poker?

I mean once it’s in the muck you can’t see his cards. If it’s still identifiable sure you can ask but it’s considered bad form, as he is giving up his right to win the pot by mucking. Also generally his hand will still be live if you ask to see it so if there’s any chance he misread his hand then you are screwing yourself by asking him to show.
My advice is to just let it go. It’s a rabbithole you don’t want to go down and could potentially turn the table against you. Some people thrive in that kind of environment but personally I prefer to keep a low profile.

Wasn't this my original post? lol
mod: yes, this is the latest in spam tech. they just steal and AI/restate other posts so that they sound reasonable in the context of the thread and then add in spam links.
I know it can be hard to tell sometimes, but if you see a post with a link in it and it looks spammy, please report it and don't respond to it. It just makes more work for us to have to clean up, e.g. after VideoPro (one of the site admins) deleted the spammy post above after it was reported earlier today (the one you guys are quoting, which you can no longer see because it's been deleted now), I then had to go in to both CRD and your quotes of their posts to delete the link out of them as well. I will sometimes just delete your reply posts as part of the moderation, which is easier, but it's still more work for me.
