Why was she detained? I never heard this story.

The former actress-turned-entrepreneur from British Columbia secured a three-year U.S. work visa last spring and had been living and working in Los Angeles, her mother told CBC. However, after visiting home in November, Mooney discovered her visa had been revoked when she attempted to re-enter the United States.

Mooney said she later returned to the Mexico border with a new job offer and the necessary visa paperwork, but because she had already been flagged, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers denied her entry back into Mexico and detained her instead.

Source NEWSWEEK

Now clearly the next two weeks was excessively restrictive and unnecessary but the crux of the matter is that she KNEW her VISA had been revoked. but it appears she reentered the United States via Mexico -

Again I am NOT trying to justify the excess in the some of the reported treatment but NONE of this occurs if she clears up the PAPERWORK prior to reentering the United States. Moral of the story - make sure you follow the rules of whatever country you are visiting no matter who you because bureacracies dont care who you are.

However, after visiting home in November, Mooney discovered her visa had been revoked when she attempted to re-enter the United States.Mooney said she later returned to the Mexico border with a new job

''He asked why I had gone to the San Diego border the second time to apply. I explained that that was where my lawyer’s offices were, and that he had wanted to accompany me to ensure there were no issues.''

''I restarted the visa process and returned to the same immigration office at the San Diego border, since they had processed my visa before and I was familiar with it. Hours passed, with many confused opinions about my case. The officer I spoke to was kind but told me that, due to my previous issues, I needed to apply for my visa through the consulate. I told her I hadn’t been aware I needed to apply that way, but had no problem doing it.

Then she said something strange: “You didn’t do anything wrong. You are not in trouble, you are not a criminal.”

I remember thinking: Why would she say that? Of course I’m not a criminal!

She then told me they had to send me back to Canada. That didn’t concern me; I assumed I would simply book a flight home. But as I sat searching for flights, a man approached me.

“Come with me,” he said.

There was no explanation, no warning. He led me to a room, took my belongings from my hands and ordered me to put my hands against the wall. A woman immediately began patting me down. The commands came rapid-fire, one after another, too fast to process.''

Funny how context matters and how the writing seems to be different when they quote her word for word. This clearly wasn't someone trying to get into the US via Mexico illegally. It very explicitly states that that's where they process the work visa.

So no. 0 excuse for what happened to her and the fact a Canadian citizen wasn't just put on the very first flight back to Canada says it all.

Nonsense.

Lets try this one more time. Was she LEGALLY in the United States. The answer is NO. Once that is the case everything else that occurred while EXCESSIVE is perfectly legal. I understand it is upsetting to you as a Canadian and I can't say I blame you. But also realize the THE GUARDIAN is a left of center biased publication. Also realize that she is effectively getting a huge amount of free publicity for her "Holy water" product and she is an actress. Okay lemons from Lemonade maybe. But FOLLOW THE DARN LAW and none of this occurs.

Again - this is an unfortunate antidotal story and a bi product of the United States allowing +12 million illegal immigrants that last 4 years

You nincompoop, she didn't even enter the United States, she was stopped at the border crossing as she was trying to follow the process to enter legally.

Yeah it's hilarious he's being condescending ''trying this one more time'' whilst completely incapable of reading.

''I stayed in Canada for the next few months, and was eventually offered a similar position with a different health and wellness brand.

I restarted the visa process and returned to the same immigration office at the San Diego border, since they had processed my visa before and I was familiar with it.''

Moral of the story. Canadian woman follows THE DARN LAW. American border patrol agent is a clown and she ends up spending 2 weeks in a prison. Rather than sending a CANADIAN CITIZEN back the exact same day.

Also realize that she is effectively getting a huge amount of free publicity for her "Holy water" product and she is an actress

''Canadian woman was detained for 2 weeks by ICE because she wanted to promote herself and her product''.

Okay then.

Sorry to change the subject but I actually wouldn't mind if tourism in Vegas got wrecked a little, the prices are out of control. Something needs to change. This has been going on for a while now and I'm not just talking about simple inflation....I'm talking about a slice of pizza and a beer for example. The prices are 10x-15x what I pay in my state

Yea people keep paying so they keep raising prices. Hopefully there is finally some pushback.

I was walking through Venetian one day and saw them advertising 2 slices of pizza and a beer for 32 dollars on a giant sign.

I was thinking I'd be burying those rediculous prices on the menu not advertising them.

And I'd bet anything it was horrible pizza too.

Hilarious they advertise that as a deal, sadly it probably is a deal compared to other places lol

I remember when Vegas buffets were super cheap. Food wasn’t great by any means neither was it terrible but **** me the prices now.

Admitting you're wrong is hard. I get it. She wasn't in the US illegally. You can continue to try and weasel your way out of this one or just admit you're wrong and you're living in the United States of the Soviet Union where Canadian citizens are getting detained by ICE for following THE DARN LAW.

I think the problem is for anyone with a working visa or trying to get one. If you're simply a tourist, aka a poker player, from another country, there shouldn't be any issues at all.

I have friends that have working visas in USA.. Wouldn't say I'm particularly worried for them, but ya if they return to Canada to visit family or whatever, and then go back to States, maybe some border agent with his panties in a knot causes a situation.

Just a normal person, with a valid passport, travelling there for a few days/weeks, no problems.

I really have tried to be nice, I truly understand to a degree your frustration but GD it buddy I am NOT wrong. She WAS in the UNITED STATES, She WAS detained at the border ON UNITED STATES SOIL. She DID NOT have a VALID VISA because it had previously been revoked. She therefore was entering the country illegally by the letter of the law even if it was with pure intent. You get a VALID VISA before you try to come into the United States in this situation. She no longer was just someone flying into the country to play in a poker tournament or driving to play poker in Detroit it was an entirely different situation. Now I already said a half dozen times the response was in my opinion excessive. GOT IT NOW. As to the rest of your slamming of the United States okay fine Your right to your uninformed opinion so be as much of a dxck as this site allows. Don't come to the WSOP now or until Hxll freezes over for all I care. I told you very nicely and respectfully in an earlier post I hope you changed your mind but I respected your opinion and understood why you might choose to stay home. So play the Canadian open or perhaps Fly to Europe for the WSOP events there. I may miss your dead money or be grateful that a top flight player has improved my own EV. Again don't know don't care but I am somewhat familiar with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) since MY FAMILY were / are immigrants and I am currently a legal sponsor of a legal immigrant. It's an over detailed bureaucracy and you better be dotting your "i's" and crossing your "ts" as the saying goes carefully to navigate it successfully. CBP (U.S. Customs and Border Protection) has done a 180 degree flip in the last 2 months and we are trying to reverse the damage of the last 4 years ... and YES on specific occasions they are over reaching and over reacting. But I also know what a cluster F the Canadian system is and how frigging difficult it is to even be allowed entry into Canada from many countries and how extremely difficult it is to ever be even considered for Canadian Citizenship. That's cool with me Your country, YOUR rules, that were put in place to meet YOUR goals for immigration. So fine stay home as your protest of current United States policies. Oh and yes we have issues in the the United States but at least we aren't throwing our truckers in jail and haven't failed to meet our international military financial commitments for the last decade. Enjoy the summer and hopefully the games are profitable for you.

All those words, no paragraphs and STILL wrong. She was detained at the US border trying to get in. She wasn't IN.

You moron.

You are hilariously stupid. Just a weasel trying to get of on some bs technicality ''she was on US soil at the border''.

They did not cross into Canada, snatch a Canadian citizen, and detain her in America.

The whole story sucks, and she was unnecessariky detained, as far as I know, but let's no pretend she wasn't 'IN'.

You upset if the US detains a person at their border that has a truck full of explosives? Or just a sorry, can't come in, go back to Canada please.

She wasn’t in the US illegally. She was trying to get in the US. Not pretending anything. It’s literally her story.

Flew to Mexico, went to the San Diego border, thought she could get in the same way she did previous time(s) and got detained.

It’s shocking you people don’t seem to get this and even more shocking we now need to use truck full of explosives examples.

Yes. They should’ve sent her back.

I'm just trying to understand when border officials can detain people. Not about whether they should or not in various circumstances, as I agree, the reasoning for this one seems very excessive.

But if the answer is never, because they "aren't in the US" that's weird too.

This is 100% false. She was trying to get in the US, via Mexico, like she had done before. Nothing more nothing less. Not my problem McCoy can't read but insists he's correct.

Anyways. Time to move on. Sorry for the derail. I should know better than to debate anything US with Americans.

This post reads like she wasn't IN, and if people aren't IN, US border officials shouldn't be able to detain them. That's a weird take to me.

I mean, it's a border. There's a line between two countries. You cross the line to go meet the border agent who is like a few feet inwards so you can apply for legal entry. He says that's not the proper way to do it, which is fine. But then they throw her in prison for two weeks like she's some criminal.

Then people come here to justify it by saying she was illegally in the US. Well, if that helps them sleep at night... But to the rest of us, the behavior by the CBP is thuggish and the rationalizations absurd.
