So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

With how fast the Conservatives are falling in the polls I think Trudeau probably would have won again.

Watching Poilievre's concession speech is going to be so satisfying

Don't think so. No small part of this is the fact that Carney is so many things Trudeau wasn't. And wears very few of Trudeau's failures (in the eyes of the electorate). I think Carney is also very clearly far more centrist, and its working.

Obviously it's hard to say how much is the unity aspect of this Liberal campaign, which the conservative campaign has ZERO of. But each is playing a part.

The conservatives also have very little sticking to Carney. And now they're going after his wife and kids, which is backfiring.

No I am a realistic knowing that nothing but technology or an extreme pandemic solves that problem. So why destroy our economy for China and India

Neutral cost = destroy .

Again been through that many times u just don’t care .
“Necessity is the mother of all innovation/invention “.
Doesn’t come from thin air …
That is why you put tax , to force people to actually do something by themselves and corporations to actually find better innovative way to do business .

Let’s say for a second that climate change is real and so represent a very bad outcomes that could almost eliminated billions of people and our solution
isn’t just to be sure technology will find a way , it’s about u betting technology will find a way in the right amount of time , not too late ….

So we risk couple billions of life , on the premise technology will find away quickly to remedy it (tho no solution been found yet for the last 40-50 years) just to protect couple % of gdp that actually could be tamper by new jobs becoming profitable du to higher cost -> need to be more environmentally friendly cost money , maybe new business could emerge .
I mean how bad is it for the earth to actually live in a better environment … it’s so bad right ?

You have such a small perspective about things its mind blowing….

Ps: the country that will invest and find long lasting solution will become rich very quickly , with lozen Canada as absolutely no chance to be that country 100% .
Let’s do nothing , someone else will do it for us .
U don’t do it for China or India , we do it for us ….

detail here is you are accounting for costs that aren't caused by Canadian fossil fuel consumption, and that doesn't damage Canada at all (a warmer world is obviously beneficial to you massively).so you are internalizing costs paid elsewhere by others to which maybe Canada contributes in a slight manner, and I ternalizing utility functions of non Canadians to justify utilitaria

God the confidence with which you walk into areas so deeply outside of your understanding is incredible.

quick fact check: No, a warmer world doesn't help Canada. It causes an incredible amount of expensive climate disasters for us. Sure Canada might be in the most livable zone of whatever shitshow is left but to say it helps us shows you know nothing about climate change, science, or Canada. If anything, it helps ensure the US invades us for our water.

Breaking the social contract is doing nothing while the world falls apart around you. I can't really follow why a pigovian tax is so deeply immoral to you. Also wtf are you doing talking about the social contract when you are so committed to having an antisocial take on every single issue.

PP just committed to axing the industry carbon tax as well which I believe will cause some issues with the EU market's regulations. That one, or something similar, probably has to stay if we are going that direction.

I agree that Canada has an incredible opportunity to capitalize on resource and energy potential and absolutely needs to do so. We probably need to force more resource extraction through and encourage those industries although I think the oil & gas opportunities have partially passed us by. It makes sense to still have policies focused on forward looking "renewable" energy. I would really like to see Canada go all into Nuclear as we have some of the world's best fuel sources and some of the leading research, design & higher end tech around nuclear. Mineral extraction and nuclear should be the blue print IMO.

No it isn’t but thx for proving u know **** about Canada .
Let me explain a simple concept to you , Infrastructure ( ever heard of sewer for example ) made for winter , nature , economy , etc cannot change in 2 years without massive damages to deal with extreme climate changes like massive amount of water coming in more and more from the North !

https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/75-0...

Flooding, triggered by heavy rainfall, coastal storm surges and other weather events, has become a growing reality for many Canadians. Costing $2 billion in structural damages to homes per year, flooding is the number one natural disaster in Canada – more common than earthquakes, tornadoes and even wildfires. Furthermore, the risk of flooding is expected to continue to grow in the coming decades, largely due to the effects of climate change.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change explains that climate change can intensify the water cycle, resulting in increased heavy rainfall and associated flooding.Note 1 Indeed, rising sea levels and heavier precipitation mean a larger area of land in Canada is now at risk of flooding. In 2024, 80% of Canadian cities were located on flood plains.

But since you know $h!t about 50% of what you talk about and don’t change your mind I will leave it at that …

Ps: Canada is one of the highest gas emitter per capita in the world for your information ….higher than the U.S.
we are around 13th ..

If only it was that topic he was like that ….

You know luciom , maybe you should stop writing 100+ post a day and start reading more or inform yourself better on a lot of $h!t ….

You've admitted climate change is your number one concern when voting. You have argued for the carbon tax to be higher, that we need to do more, any policy that keeps more oil in the ground is a new one, you cheered gleefully when a hardcore climate activist was named minister of environment. Your argument was we have a moral responsibility to fight climate change and change co

What on earth are you talking about? I think dropping the consumer carbon tax is really unfortunate. We should keep it. Unfortunately, the political reality is that it has become too unpopular and hard to imagine Carney winning while keeping it, so his move is understandable. Regardless, the consumer carbon tax was always (as I’ve said many times) but one plank in the total carbon reduction budget and significant differences remain between parties on the more impactful industrial carbon tax and other policies.

Is that simple reality “mental gymnastics” in your do-nothing worldview?

Its not neutral even if you believe 80% of consumers get more back than they pay. You still have 20% that do not and than factor in BC and Quebec and you have a ton more individuals and yes I understand Quebec is cap and trade .
Also small businesses and big businesses get nothing back and pass those costs on to the consumer

Also no need to say lets say climate change is real I have never denied it wasn't

And no we don't do it for us we do it for the Ukes and Montrealers of the country

sad to see disinformation being spread even after it’s over. The taxes laid by businesses (outside the separate large emitter program which is totally different) ARE still rebating the money back to consumers. So yes they may or may not pass costs to consumers, but then the rebates are larger benefiting people more. And the 20% who pay more are mostly rich people.

"UNLV's Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) projects a decrease in visitor traffic by 5.8% in 2025 and 6.9% in 2026"

I say that's hopelessly optimistic. I expect much worse.

That is a number they will notice. Though Vegas is already reeling from drops in revenue. The city has become so expensive and I think folks are looking elsewhere

Let me explain something simple to you. Climate change is a global problem. In order to tackle a global problem it helps that the two biggest polluters are part of the solution to fix it . Without them your fighting a losing battle

by jchristo

Oh man if you think that is a moral imperative then you must REALLY like foreign aid programs. Big advocate for increasing those right?

Great argument and comparison.

by jchristo

A carbon tax is a market-based approach to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by putting a price on carbon pollution (yes, pollution!). The point of a carbon tax is not to make energy more expensive, but to price in the future environmental costs of emissions while incentivizing businesses and consumers to shift toward cleaner energy sources, increase energy efficiency, an

Man, you've really drank the cool-aid, using words like cleaner. Has shifting towards "cleaner energy sources" made reliable energy more efficient? How do you account for future costs, what's the number? How do you incentivize consumers to shift without making one more expensive?

by jchristo

Global access to energy and production levels have actually been steadily increasing with all these stupid progressives ruining the world btw.

In spite of these stupid policies, thanks to the most innovative industry ever, the fossil fuel industry. We still don't produce nearly enough energy.

I could have missed it as I've often skimmed through your carbon tax rhetoric. But I don't ever remember you saying the industrial carbon tax is more important than the consumer carbon tax for our moral obligations to stop climate change. I don't recall you ever separating the 2 until your fearless leader did.

If Pierre gets desperate and says he'll reinstate all carbon tax would you vote for him?

by MSchu18

He probably would be Prime Minister right now if he hadn't of narrowly lost the leadership race for the Conservative party a few years back.

You're a single issue rabid dog for the fossil fuel lobby but think I drank the cool-aid? I don't have strong feelings about the carbon tax but I do believe in the need to build policy that steers industrial and consumer behaviours towards the public good and ensures that the real costs and benefits are accounted for. No one thinks the future is oil and gas so why are you pushing it so hard? This cool-aid tastes a little wild rose flavored to me.

You can criticize policy all you want but miss me with that Randian "unshackle industry and those great men will carry humanity to the promise land" bullshit. We tried it and it's not how the story ends. We do agree on the need for energy production though and that the feds need to push it now. Hydro, geothermal, nuclear now.

Real talk, have we ever seen a worse national campaign in the last 25 years than this conservative one now? It's unreal

Going after Carney's family is imploding on them
Hiding Pierre from the media will do the same
Trying to split hairs on axing the tax is not playing with the public
Pierre not getting his security clearance after Carney got it in 2 weeks looks putrid

This is going to be taught in political science classes one day. What a disaster for the party.

Doug Ford can see his future as party leader clear as day

Nothing the conservatives could have done really.

Mark Carney is extremely well qualified. All the voters can google his pedigree and its spotless. He immediately pivoted the liberal party towards the center which is what we needed.

Canadians also had Carney as our BoC governor and Canada did very well during financial crisis vs other G7 nations. So we already have seen Carney as a 'steward' of sorts for Canadians.

Also Trump attacked Canada very hard and the Liberals did a good job responding. Tough enough to stand up to the bully but didn't go off the cliff like Doug Ford almost did (still a very good thing Doug did).

We also got rid of Trudeau, which satisfied a lot the bloodlust amongst Canadian casual voters like me. I was gonna vote conservatives 100% but then Mark Carney came along and I have to vote for him now.

If Freeland had won the leadership, I'd be first in line to vote conservative and throw that useless "Masters in Russian languages or whatever education she had" immediately out.

If Carney wins the next election, my God is Trudeau going to be happy. He effectively saves his legacy.

We'll also get to see Uke_Master write the longest "I told you so" diatribe on this forum.... Now that I am a liberal voter I'll look forward to it!
