Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis
I woke up in the middle of choking to death again; though to be accurate, it was towards the end of the process--woke up
I enjoyed it for a while (the first 2 seasons to be precise), but it gets sloppy henceforth - or henceback... 😉. The GOAT time travel series, imho, are Dark and 1899. Russian Doll was fine.
I have Dark and Russian Doll on the long list. 1899 could be problematic, as for some reason subtitles are glitchy on the dark streamers; sometimes they work, sometimes they work partially, or they're misaligned with the video by several seconds, and sometimes they won't play even when the original broadcast ran them. I don't pretend to understand how that works, I just know that it doesn't always.
I'm also really enjoying the first season of Severance. If the quality keeps up, it may end up being in the top 10 tier.
Hey SJ any update on the grind front?
Poker 6 hours: +$111. Slots 4 hours, +$270.
I feel as if I made a mental game breakthrough at the poker table today, stemming from some ideas I'd had in planning my new exercise routine. As always, time will tell. I'll write a post at some point soon with the details, but here's the gist of it...
Spoiler
recommend resisting urges to reach out grasping at hot streaks
one alternative is extending a simple finger perch for migratory birds to flock
Exercise routine, really!?! I can state that since I religiously exercise 30-45 minutes each day before playing live MTTs, my focus stays all day, I am rarely tired (even after 12-15h of play) and my mind remains fresh at the wee hours in the morning yo
Am curious about this new routine of yours...

I'm treating the mini winning streak as a life preserver that's being thrown to me in very rough waters. I won't take it for granted.
+$148 on the slots this morning. Today I have to shop for a shirt for my nephew's wedding, so no poker.

You're probably the only one who's curious about it, but I will dish...eventually.
None of the stuff about the various women is relevant, unfortunately. I imagine those boys got some serious trim back in the day.
Having all the ladies in a hostess bar in Taichung singing along with me when I did Desperado for karaoke is as close as I'll ever get to that.

Also thinking of booking over/under bets as to when sj figures out that poker is exactly the same as slots -- you wait for games to be ready to pay off then you sit down. He's almost there, I can feel it coming.

reminds me of the bay area beast thread asking about what time to login to the pokersites to ensure you hit the good side of the rng
You kind of hinted. Wonder if your breakthrough is "I don't have to win every hand I'm in." Something I'm struggling with; just because I was good early, get away when it turns bad.
Nice. This is nice.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I remember logging on to pre-moneymaker paradise poker to play Omaha when the European bars were closing. Magnificent games.
sir, you give a beast too much credit, i can't find it now but under one of his many accounts, he started a thread talking about whether he should login at 5:35 or 5:36 or even dare he suggest login at 5:33 - because in his mind, the moment you login is what determines whether the rng is going to favor you later on when you join tables
it's a beauty of a train wreck to watch

I vaguely remember this. I believe he had software that could peek under his opponent's cards as they were being dealt. Now I'm going to have to look for that thread...

I just know that it becomes exponentially harder by the street. A great starting hand is trivial to dump on certain rivers, but a hand that was great on the turn always has a hundred voices speaking up on its behalf when things go south on the river.

Thanks for the kind words about the reviews, Phat Mack!
As far as the slot/poker analogy goes: it's fortunate that I don't have to inspect thirty or more $1/$2 tables before I find a good one, and then having that table stay good for only a few hands, but I get your gist.
I not shy about transferring away from tables that aren't good. I do it often enough that I sometimes expect the floor person to sigh and ask "transfer?" when I walk up, but they don't...probably because I haven't been playing often enough.

I've read about video games where you create a save point at an exact time in order to catch rare loot at a spawn point governed by their pseudo RNG. And online poker is also a video game, hopefully with a more robust RNG.

On an unrelated note: if AI algorithms end up destroying our species, I don't think we'll be the first to go out that way, like not even the first in this galaxy.
You're welcome 😀

You are closest to guessing my potential mental game breakthrough.
Take It Easy
If you go back to this post you will find a detailed history about the only time I put together a long and successful exercise routine. But you can skip that for the cliffs below.
Spoiler
Cliffs: in high school, I worked out almost every day for a year as an excuse to hang out and smoke cigarettes with my like-minded friend Bill. This actually helped me to secure a starting position on our school football (American football) team. But it wasn't the exercise or its benefits that kept me coming back, it was the camaraderie and the nicotine addiction.
Compare that to the mindset of Muhammad Ali in his prime, who said that he didn't start counting his pushups until they started hurting.
Which leads to the followup post, which you can again skip for the cliffs below.
Cliffs: I'm very different in many ways compared to Ali, but pushups are a part of my short stretching and exercise routine. I have quit them every time because, after some success, I have always pushed myself to add reps too quickly, and then I always start to dread the routine, and then I stop.
On that last exercise stint four years ago, I made it up to 45 pushups, which was not bad for a chubby guy in his 50s. But I pushed it too hard, and I stopped. Here's the thing: while 45 pushups was rough, I could have instead done 40 pushups easily. 40 pushups is still a lot. Why not have an easy day of it, and still get a good workout, and insure that I show up the next day to do 40 again? (As a side note, I'm back to starting with 6 again.)
Take it easy. That's the gist of it. I have installed safeguard rules this time around to limit premature increases in reps and thus prevent irrational exercise exuberance.
So, on to the poker. The question struck me out of the blue at the beginning my last session: am I also pushing too hard, physically, at the poker table? Reflexively, I brushed the thought away.
What do you mean, physically? I'm just sitting here, relaxing, getting no exercise beyond the trifles of handling cards and chips.
I mean, what state are you in? Are you actually relaxed?
Yeah I'm...wait a second: no. I'm not. I'm tense. I'm keyed up. I'm in fight or flight mode, and I'm not even in a hand. What the hell?
And there it was: I was so used to being tense at the poker table that I had ceased to notice it, if I'd ever indeed noticed it. Thanks to my high school football background, I had conflated competing against people with getting keyed up to do so.
No wonder that I felt drained and demoralized after just 3 or 4 hours at the table. I couldn't stay in fight or flight for that long without consequences.
I used to drink at the table, and that would knock the physical edge off, at the expense of my intellectual and strategic edge. The drinking was solving a mental game leak that I hadn't noticed, then creating a different leak.
So, during that last session, no longer having the drink option, I centered myself. I did some breathing exercises, and I relaxed my muscles wherever I found tension. Ohmmmmmmmmmmm.
And damn if that didn't work like a charm. I played a 6 hour session, keeping myself relaxed, and I came out of it feeling great. It's still something new that I'll have to work on, but I believe that I've made a breakthrough, simple and obvious and silly in retrospect as it seems.
Great poast, Suited. I also enjoyed rereading those two old poasts about exercising.
I still do push-ups myself every morning, more or less alternating between just a few and a lot (actually not that many, but enough that it hurts at the end). I cannot bear the thought of having skipped my push-ups even once, which is likely the main reason why I've been able to maintain the routine.
