I told this tale in another Physical Media Film Group to which I belong...This was my first 'Optical' purchase ever... more than 35 years ago (even though Laser Disc is an Analog, not digital, format).I bought this Japanese import Laser Disc of 'Akira' (+150$ in 1990 dollars) from a underground comic book store even before I had a way to display it on my crappy cathode-ray TV..

I've seen this movie at least a dozen times in theaters, and my opinion of it has gone up with every viewing.

Edit: Upon reflection, I think it's because the characters flesh out and become more real. At first, they seemed cartoonish. Maybe for a reason.

Is it still possible to get a LD player?

Surviving Black Hawk Down doc on Netflix is good...told from both sides of the story. I then watched the movie the next day, which I probably haven't seen for well over a decade. Just as good as I remembered it, and it is an extremely faithful adaptation of the events that took place.

English dub or Japanese Language with subtitles?

It even has more gravitas to me personally after I had read the graphic novel and learned more deeply about the characters and just how much Kaneda and Tetsuo meant to each other from the time they met in the orphanage...

Seeing as the characters are all VERY young teenagers (from 13-15, the eldest being 17 years old) in the original text makes the story even more grounded.

it is still possible on the used market... but really, the 4k uhd disc is just superior in every way.

Scarecrow Pacino and Hackman are drifters that become friends. Each has a personal mission, Hackman to open a car wash and Pacino to see a child he's never seen. They make their way to their destinations, mostly by hopping trains, stopping along the way for various reasons.OK I guess. I always like watching actors in their earlier roles. Pacino especially, before he became

I really enjoyed this movie back when I watched it a couple of decades ago. I love any road movie a la Easy Rider, given that I was also a nomadic drifter for a decade+ and can relate to the road.

I am probably the only one with the opinion, but I felt that OUATIH was fairly weak for Tarantino... despite the beautiful construction of the Film.
perhaps his weakest work, by far.

You’re not the only one. Beautifully shot but it’s complete garbage otherwise, as bad as any ‘serious mainstream’ movie ever done by a HOF in their prime director. Has Pitt ever been worse? This made his work in Ocean’s Twelve look like Pacino’s work in Godfather II.

There probably is a 45 minute cut that would look really cool with the sound off and the right playlist on.

The Rock is definitely the peak of whatever genre you want to call it. My birthplace SF also looking good in it (but when doesn’t she?) tho What’s Up Doc was probably her peak.

this feels like a horror film

It's the Single White Female for this generation.

Finally watched The Proposition yesterday. Now that is one hardcore Western. The word "harrowing" kept coming to mind as I watched. I think I'd still prefer something like Stagecoach or Fort Apache, but this is good too. Different times...

Reminded me a little of Peckinpah's Straw Dogs.

I've only seen the subtitled version. Please, I beg of you, don't get me started on dubbed anime.

I've read most of the American flipped version of Akira. Please, I beg of you, don't get me started...

I was able to see a 35mm film presentation of Akira in the theaters... nothing has ever looked so impressive.

Fincher has a problem...

I was watching the new 4k uhd release of Paris, Texas again last night and I decided to put together all the versions I have of it... four total.

the new remastered release is absolutely mind blowing in how good it looks. Superb color saturation and de-noise without any hint of over-processing unlike the stuff that James Cameron puts out... which is horrific.

nice

I remember watching Paris, Texas on VHS back in the day and loving it...and then going to the Nuart in L.A. to see a 35mm print of it. So gloriously sad and beautiful. Wim Wenders is one of my favorites.

I sometimes put on the 5 hour version of Until the End Of the World to just play in the background as I clean the house or something lol.

Nuart was a fantastic intimate place to see hard to find Films... I spent many a nights there.

Fincher: four sigmas out

I was there when they showed the work print of Blade Runner - which was without the narration, had temp music, and a completely different opening credits.

It has played at SF Nuart when they did not know what it was - they were sent the work print by accident! And it became a sensation and seems Ridley Scott to make his "directors cut" that was rushed...and then later to the Final Cut.

Watching it with an audience of BR fans and film freaks was amazing. I think it played for weeks lol. People were literally screaming the title sequence.

So this was long after Blade Runner had been released?

My wife went to visit her sister which always means I get to watch a horror movie or two. I don't get many chances so I'm always hoping I pick one that I won't be disappointed in. OOPPSSS... Picked the wrong one. Watched hagazussa. Ugh. I kept waiting for something to happen but nothing really did. A little too artsy for me. I should have turned it off when it appeared it was all mood and nothing much else.

Yes, 1991. BR was released in 1982.

I enjoyed The Gorge quite a bit. Fun mashup of a romance/sci-fi/monster movie. Anya Taylor Joy and Miles Taylor were both quite charming and romantic...talk about a unique "meet cute!" And some cool action and good and yucky monsters. Entertaining as hell.

Old school trailers, while misleading, were pretty awesome. Any fans of The Postman? One of my favorite, er, bad movies. "In a world where Tom Petty plays his future self..."

Same here.. Charming acting saved this one. Fun watch even though the underlying premise was silly.
