He is humanized by the two main protagonists for more than an hour and a half before he is hunted down and killed like a rabid dog by the totality of Humanity, which happens to include his best friend.

Companion was great. It's not horror at all, it's a thriller that easily could have been an episode of Black Mirror.

To echo the previous poster: don't watch the trailer and definitely don't read the one sentence synopsis on Google. It's terrible how much is spoiled.

Bullet Train was on FXM last night. Being on FXM meant commercial interruptions, so I'd watch a few minutes, then flip to something else.

Seemed like mindless fun of a very violent sort.

Pure trash that I'll still watch for whatever reason.

I am DONE with Dinosaurs and I was NEVER on board with a militant Scarlet Johannson... she's better than that cash grab and completely unbelievable as an operative.

The Fantastic Four trailer is better than that garbage... and I hate the MCU.
at least the F4 has much better color grading and period design. and that score is not really all that bad and very well put together

yeah... I wont be watching this either, but I might buy that soundtrack

here is a small example of the 'anchoring' of scenes from The Third Man that use The Dutch Angle...

Agree the F4 trailer looks better and I'm way more of a JP fan than I am of F4, even though I enjoy the MCU.

What irks me the most is it's been 32 years since the original JP and we still can't get dinosaurs that look remotely as good as they did back then.

Retro futurism will always be cool.

I attribute that view less to the fact that they can't get the illustration and color grading correct and more to the way that the animated characters move.

movement based in a Newtonian world is MUCH DIFFERENT than the way that they move in a modern commercial movie... and subconsciously our brain knows the difference.

if anyone thinks a 100 ton mass of flesh can jump like a fluffy kitty cat, I have a bridge to nowhere I would like to sell you.

it's the same with modern fight sequences and the incessant need to montage every punch with camera cuts that kills any feeling of continuity.

by John Cole

And who would that be?

In a related matter to usage of overly frequent camera cutting and the fact that it kills continuity... I posted this clip by Steven Spielberg from his very first film.

this 'Single' tracking shot is actually a good 20-30 seconds longer than in the video here...

It's a truly magnificent shot with amazing colors on screen.
for some reason the sound was lowered... probably my new phone case killed the cell microphone.

Kill Bill Vol 1 - What can I say that hasn't been said already? I wanted to watch a clip from Vol 2 then I was like welp, guess I gotta watch 'em both all the way through. Kinda boggles my mind this is Tarantino's 4th film. I love the chapter format and love the way it moves. One of my takeaways of watching early QT films is there's a rhythm and pace I can't put my finger on, but it feels like Sally Menke allows the viewer just the right amount of time to draw maximum emotions in every scene.

I have only seen a tiny bit of that film.

I always use canted frame rather than Dutch angle. I don't know why but I like it better. Those are nice shots from The Third Man. Even though it's not named after the film, a popular misconception, The Third Man cologne was my choice last night. In French, it's Le 3e Homme by Caron. It was Caron's third man's cologne.

The only cologne I know of that's named after a film is Mr. Hulot's Holiday.

I have the Midnight in Paris cologne but it's not named after the Woody Allen film.

I just rewatched them both also because they were just released by Lionsgate in 4k uhd...

QT is the master of pacing... and frankly, modern action sequences.
The Hannah and Thurman mobile home fight is one for the ages... just pure brilliance. Tasteful Montage, strategic pauses, building musical crescendo and ultimately the surprise 'kill shot' ending.

I hate cell phone typing... it makes it very difficult to get complete thoughts out with any coherence.

definitely think Menke had a huge influence of Tarantino and how his films are put together. The Kill Bill movies are probably my favorite of his films. They are so "rewatchable."

Just saw this. I thought is was good until the final 30 minutes where the it seems to abandon its premises. IMO, Iris shouldn't be able to do what she did at the end. Still worth a watch considering what's available among new releases.

I thought Nr. 24 (2025, Netflix) was excellent. It is thrilling and is based on a true heroic story of the anti-Nazi underground.

Kill Bills are total masterpieces in my opinion, 2 of my most memorable theater experiences

A few of these seem really odd when you think about it. If the frame is tilted but the actor's head is not, does that mean they were leaning over?
The one with the woman in the window is really weird.

I also noticed The Rza was the composer for Kill Bill Vol 1 only, and not Vol 2. I wonder why that is. I really enjoyed his work here and he did a terrific job with The Man With the Iron Fists.

There are so many subtle things that are oddly satisfying, like this shot with Nikki coming home directly in the middle between Black Mamba and Copperhead, framed perfectly with the window pane.

Uma Thurman is absolutely stunning throughout.

I love the visual storytelling of The Bride meeting Hattori Hanzo for the first time. Their initial shots on a long lens, then as she reveals her intentions, we get these deeply intimate shots where they see eye to eye and he realizes he can speak Japanese and she can meet him at that level. Just stunning stuff. (Cropping may not be perfect, but you get the idea)

Oh wow! I'll have to add them to my wishlist. Went on a bit of a physical media spree recently.

Retro futurism will always be cool.

This is a wonderful point. Whereas modernism is born trite and remains trite, futurism is the gift that keeps on giving.

Marvel filmmakers and their kin don't know how to shoot and edit fight scenes. There's an Every Frame a Painting on Jackie Chan which highlights this. They cut just as the strike connects, which makes it look like people flailing.

COMPANION (2024) Thumbs up!

I inherently dislike any film that is set over a weekend at a lakeside Estate...

by John Cole

I have only seen a tiny bit of The Sugarland Express...

I might suggest you take the time if you have any fondness for 70's cinema... it's a Brutal film that leaves a hand mark on the face of the Naive after being slapped with worldly realities.

Goldie Hawn was the perfect choice for the roll of the Naive...

The new remastered 4k uhd release is superb...
