Obviously logic dictates they are bad rather than bribed and I expect that few bribery ~allegations are serious.
But I would personally claim that larger clubs and countries benefit more often as a result of a subconscious bias of the collective referee.
The problem is that your logic might tell you that refs aren't corrupt but they have in fact been found guilty of match fixing before and even this very referee was involved in keeping match fixing quiet, admitted it and received a ban for it.
So while I'm not wholly on the England win was a fix side, it is a possibility. The big question is why England when UEFA hates them so much due to the behaviour of their fans over the years. Maybe it just wanted them in the final to maximise global audiences.
yeah for these tournaments where all these countries send 1 ref, theoretically their best, and the hosts name this guy who has already been involved in match fixing ... certainly a bold move. i used to watch a lot of bundesliga, and they seem to have a lot of competent refs based on how many games would come and go without incident ..... is this guy supposed to be their best these days? i would have erred on the side of picking someone with a clean record ... or maybe they don't have one of those? lol
I think it was probably his reward for grassing up the match fixers decades ago, and to encourage others in a similar position to do the same.

Players have been found guilty of match fixing as well, but whenever a player makes a crucial mistake i dont assume its because of match fixing, i assume its because of a slip-up/incomptetence. And in 99% of the cases in serious football that is the case. The same for referees, of course there have been corrupt cases but in the big mistakes this is a big minority.
When it comes to assigning the refs im sure there is a lot of cronyism and playing favorites by UEFA/FIFA. The assignment of this particular ref that was found guilty of match fixing as an assistant and the history with Bellingham's quote about his reputation was of course a huge mistake by the UEFA and they could have foreseen the commotion whenever he made an error.
Btw, he also refereed the match of the Netherlands vs Romania and nobody here in the Netherlands thought twice about it. It was only when we drawed England. Orsata was a way safer pick from the UEFA.
If England luckboxes a goal in extra time, this would probably be the least impressive tournament win I can remember since Greece
