Random side question but does anyone know if the slots/video poker will still be VLTs or if they will put in all new slots and video poker machines?

by All-inMcLovin

I heard tworooks' basement casino spreads 1-2.

for those that didn't get the reference, it was a classic thread in 2005.

They have a tooooon of slots and so much room in that casino that its not an either or situation. Both will fit easily

1/2 is going extinct. 1/3 is typically the live small stakes game in today's casinos. I'd personally like to see 2/5 (200-500) replace 1/3 as the smallest game soon.

There should be something between 2/5 and 5/10 if that’s the case. 3/6 or 4/8

by All-inMcLovin

how many slots don't actually generate much revenue anyway? That's my argument for them having a bigger room. 1. Brings people to the casino, okay you play poker but your wife/girlfriend/friends might not and go gamble elsewhere in RW. 2. Generates rake and there Will be a demand for poker.3. Poker players also like to gamble. Even "pros" go on tilt and head to the pit on occas

1) More people coming to the casino for slots than poker, by several hundred percent. This saddens me as a poker player who hates slots, but it's the truth. A 20 table poker room can conceivably make room for 160-200 poker players who came with non-poker players, and to most all casinos, that is plenty. Again, makes me sad because I'd also rather see a 40-50 table room but realism and mathematics dictate the casinos see poker as a breakeven at best vs a surefire way to essentially print their own money with slot machines.

2) Yes it generates rake, and yes there will be a demand for poker, but the rake generated is nowhere near the amount of revenue generated by a slot machine, not to mention 99% of slot machines take up way less space than a poker table and do not need a human dealer to run it, so less in payroll to run a slot machine. A slot machine that automatically generates a losing spin can bring in the same amount of money in 3 seconds that a poker table can rake in one hand that lasts 2-3 minutes. Multiply that over one hour of hands vs spins and you'll see why casinos prefer using their square footage for slots vs poker.

3) Exactly my point - you said "on occasion" - a casino has no reason to make a 40 table room when a 20 table room does the same job for them and makes room for more profitable games. Look - I love to play craps, but I don't play after being "on tilt" in the poker room. Craps is fun, but it is also my second preferred game to poker, and I play it in order to earn comps and free rooms at casinos because you can't get the same value perks at the poker table. Like many of its competitors, RW does a terrible job rating their table games players correctly for average bet and length of play. I'll be happy to give them my craps play when they have fixed this, but until I see changes, RW is in the same category for me as Caesar's and Hard Rock when it comes to table games rating: in the sh*tter.

Look, I'm not TRYING to pessimistic here - I would love to see this yet-to-open room be like Maryland Live, Parx, or National Harbor where you know any day of the week there will be 20+ tables running at all time, but I don't see that happening until the decision makers at RW see physical evidence of 200-300 people wanting poker seats at all times, and that, my friend, will take some time, hence, tempered expectations between now and the opening of a giant (30+ tables) NYC poker room.

There's two of these that are/used to be in existence:

5/5 NL - used to be played at Dania Jai Alai in Hollywood Florida (along with 1/1NL for the Octogenarians on a budget), before they deleted Jai Alai and converted the building into The Casino at Dania Beach. 5/5 is a fun game, but not enough demand for it unless you make it as such once the new room opens and the gaming control board green lights it.

Then there is the roller coaster that is 5/5 or 10/10 Double Board Bomb Pot - while it's not TRUE hold-em, the stakes run in between 2/5 and 5/10, and **** always goes down at those table if you've ever played it at Borgata.

With just the initial opening of 250 gaming tables total, it’s bigger than Borgata. Everything you’re saying makes sense I just think you’re underestimating the scale of this project and the size of the New York market. I would be astonished if their final poker room is less than 30 tables, and tbh 50 is probably closer to the minimum.

As to what’s running, Parx runs 10/10 every day of the week, with a player pool that’s over half New Yorkers. 5/10+ is going to run every day.

Splitting hairs here but the double board bomb pot games where they only do bomb pots don’t run at 5/10 or higher, and most the 5/10+ games never do bomb pots because they’re only needed to generate action if the game is nitty. 5-10 minute hands that almost always chop are kind of silly

I only played it on a dealer change, not the game where every hand is a bomb pot

Youre underestimating how huge RW is. Its damn near an airport but a casino lol

I’m sorry I had to come back to this, it is going to take zero time to prove that 200-300 people want seats at all times. They’re gonna have twice that on lists off the rip

Plenty of people just won't play 2-5, in order to replace the smallest game effectively they would need to put a 500 cap on it I think.

I personally play like 75% 2-5 23% 1-3 and then the very rare shot take at 5-10 when game is right, but 2-5 1k cap plays ENORMOUS compared to 1-3 500 cap and a lot of people dont want that.

Dilly I HOPE I am wrong, believe me. I want a robust poker room in NYC. I know RW NYC is large in square footage, but square footage does not automatically equal large poker room with 40-50+ tables. I just feel like there's a lot of expectations from NYC poker players who are jumping to the conclusion that "since there is no room here, the room will be huge". 200-300 on waiting lists will be great to see if in fact that is how this goes down, but even Tropicana AC had to expand their poker room pre-poker boom due to demand, which leads me to think that IF the demand is there (again, which I hope it is), RW will start with a small room, and then expand if the demand is undeniable and there for a prolonged period of time.

It's an incredible rush - lots of chaos. Next time you're at Borgata give it a shot for a little while, they have a table running almost every day (listed as 1/3 Bomb but its a $10 ante per hand per person).

The problem, though, is that if they start small and get overwhelmed, some people won't go and bad word of mouth will spread. Once they get a reputation as the place where you have to wait hours for a game, it'll be hard to shake with an expansion.

I know I won't go if the waits are insane...why drive 30–40 minutes to wait around for a seat if I can drive an hour more and be playing at the end of it? (Yes, yes, the action will be insane, Borgata and Parx will have died off, think of the whales, the whales...but if I'm going somewhere because I want to play poker, I'd like to actually play poker when I get there.)

No it won't. People will hear about the expansion. I'm not going either if wait lists are crazy long. But if i then hear about an expansion I'll go.

they will get overwhelmed even if they open a 70 table room

there's roughly 120 live games going on right now in LA, now double the population - that's the demand

16 hour timeframe in the city that never sleeps is a slap in the face.

NYC rebranded as the city that gets a solid 8 hours even on the weekends!!

not having the room be 24 hours on the weekend seems so wrong and I wouldn't be surprised at all if they changed their hours before opening.

Dealer school at RW starts Jan 5 and I think it’s not looking great for poker.

Nothing in the application allows you to specify what game you want to deal, and it uses the phrasing “table games” fairly often.

Dealer schools in general run for 4-12 weeks, with poker generally being longer than table games.

Part time v full time obviously influences school length and it looks like the application implies there will be sessions each day of 4 hours.

At this point I’m pretty skeptical they open in March, and near positive poker won’t be a part of it. I think July is our earliest hope for poker opening.

For poker (at least initially) theyre gonna prolly bring in outside talent. Thats what mgm was saying while they were planning on bringing table games to yonkers

The school they have listed on their website is for table games only. I believe when RWC started, they made people take the table games class before taking the poker class. They wanted to make sure table games were staffed first, then let people move to poker when they had dealers to spare. Poker is not the priority.

As for bringing in outside talent, there won't be enough. Let's say it's just 40 tables. They will need 150+ dealers to fully staff them. There simply aren't 150 experienced dealers ready to drop everything and move to Queens the day they open the room, especially when it's likely to be delayed. It's not like opening a room in Las Vegas where there's hundreds of underworked dealers waiting and cheap temporary housing for anyone moving there.

I talked to a RWC pit boss a week ago and he didn't think they'd even picked a room manager yet. They may try to have someone run poker and pit games like they do at RWC.

I really hope Hard Rock gets construction going fast. They actually understand poker.

HR is 5 years away, even if RW has the highest rake worst floors and dealers of all time I'll still play there
