I'm sure we can find a trillion examples of Hollywood stealing some foreign story and making the main character white. Or inserting the white savior into some foreign crisis.

Think of Tom Cruise as The Last Samurai

She was probably told by Disney to say what she said and she was 22, you tend to shoot from the hip more at that age. I don't have a problem with race swapping in principal when it's not relevant- Denzel kicked ass as the Equaliser, Morgan Freeman was great in Shawshank and Michael Clarke Duncan wasn't bad as Kingpin in that Daredevil flick- but that said I would agree re forc

it's understandable dinklage was like "hey that's offensive" as the only dwarf to ever have success as an actor outside of typical dwarf roles

for all the others that's their bread and butter - they were probably upset that they lost the jobs than anything else

that doesn’t count, only anti-white racism is bad.

honestly though yeah hollywood movies that are race swapped kinda suck a lot of the time. but it’s normally because of bad writing, not race swapping.

and the people that get mad at race swapping don’t just get mad at that, they also get mad about any movie with a trans person, or a gay person, or a non-traditionally presenting female character, or when they make the booba smaller in the vidya.

it’s exhausting.

This reminds me of Netflix making Cleopatra black. You can't tell me they don't do this stuff on purpose, and that's really what people have a problem with. You're intentionally ****ing with us to see how far you can push people.

the worst part about cleopatra was it wasn't an artistic choice but rather a historical docu drama where they directly said "of course she was black she was african"

reminds me of the meme of a few people complaining about white people playing egyptians only to hear "no that actor is egyptian"

The example that jumps to mind immediately for me is Argo, but if you know anything about Batman, The Dark Knight Rises white washed Bane and Talia pretty hard.

Another one that makes me smile is Lawrence of Arabia with Alec Guinness playing an Arab prince. I just love him so much I couldn't possibly be annoyed by it.

Not sure if you're approving or disapproving. 😮

The frothing irony of you guys having a wank over "black" cleopatra is that she was played by a woman with a black dad and a white mother and while its widely accepted that Cleopatra was of Macedonian heritage, she was likely of mixed race.

And I'm not saying that to insult you guys. It should make you think for a second or do some googling or something

Here’s the real problem.

People are convinced that the issue is the race swapping.

The issue actually is that we don’t have Tarantinos, Cohen Bros, Kubricks, etc anymore because Hollywood just wants remakes and the next marvel movie.

That’s why people enjoy Nolan and Bong Joon Ho, they make movies that have a point and aren’t derivative of 200 other movies.

After 20 years of this slop, somethings gotta give.

The Last Samurai got a ton of flack iirc. But the controversay can also sell

In the Last Samurai you don't have a racial swap. You have a foreigner who learns about japanese culture. And doesn't save it, no matter how much he tried.

There are examples of obscene racism is older hollywood movies and defiling of other ethnicities but the Last Samurai blatantly isn't one of them at all.

Now if you go with "westerns" moves , those have plenty of inanities attributed to natives to justify their genocides, for sure.

The reason is the form of entertainment is kinda stale compared to alternatives. Videogames surpassed box offices a while ago, tv shows stole the scene for a while as well. Then you have China to comply with (a major market these days for the blockbusters) and their tastes shape what movies get funded, to our detriment (just because we don't have identical tastes to them).

Movies will be made for a long while yet and some occasional gem might happen here or there but we are fairly done with the era of generation-defining movies for simple economical reasons.

Which, btw, is why defiling old movies is even worse

Wasn't Tom's character based on the French guy who deserted to Japan and was basically adopted by the locals and fought for their cause? That was a thing that actually happened.

Sooooo you do understand why they make the swaps then, right? They are doing it for economic reasons?

So you privilege your own anger of what’s changed over other people’s anger.

And I don’t buy at all that they can’t give 10-20 million dollars to make domestic movies that are slightly experimental/for good writing. I think it’s laziness. People love Oppenheimer and Interstellar.

You’ve bought into the lazy slop narrative.

Yes. They are. I will not be continuing this discussion further, because you are intentionally avoiding the entire point and I have no interest in driving repeatedly into that brick wall. Enjoy yourself.

No I'm not and have provided the definition of barbarian. At no point does that text say anything about purpose or lack thereof with regards to the term- you just basically added that yourself. The key point of the text is that we shouldn't "stigmatise" suicide bombers. **** that. It's apologist bullshit and seems to be attempting to rationalise and give such acts a superficial veneer of legitimacy and again **** that noise. Suicide bombers are scumbags. Hopefully that term doesn't hurt their feelings the way barbarian seems to. I have zero problem regarding their actions as barbaric, instead of stroking my chin and engaging in armchair pseudo intellectualism to attempt to make their action somehow more palatable or accepted in the mainstream.

Not to be pedantic but he wasn't. Phil Fondacaro often played villains in horror films such as Land of the Dead and Bordello of Blood. Danny Woodburn played a prison kingpin in Watchmen and Tony Cox was the villain in Bad Santa and a genius in Me Myself & Irene. 😉
Dinklage just seems to see himself as Lord of the Dwarf community. He reminds me of a dwarf version of Bono, in terms of pontification.

loosely based off a couple of people

Oldboy, The Departed, the upcoming Fincher remake of Squid Game. That said, Japan did the same thing with Cube. 😀

Or The Seven Samurai being remade as The Magnificent Seven, though nobody minds that, and the Japanese master filmed King Lear as Ran.

The Matrix was American Ghost in the Shell. Westerns were based on Samurai movies and often stole them shot for shot.

Turns out people steal stuff and rework it to the time period!

Not everytime no. Which is why snow white tanked badly.

You know a racial swap i deeply hated done for economic reasons? the movie 21.

People who didn't read the book don't know that the protagonist was supposed to be the asian guy not the white one. Instead they made the asian guy the smart but kleptomaniac one (it was the white one in the book). That's blatant racism against asians
