Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis

I woke up in the middle of choking to death again; though to be accurate, it was towards the end of the process--woke up

The older I get; the more I like The Cure. I know that at my age I can be a fan but not feel obligated to wear the makeup, so that's nice.

Thank you, golddog! The standard football promo is in place. We had snow and the roads aren't great, so I stayed home and played some freeroll and cheaproll satties, and won a couple of decent tickets...

The Beast Phil's Thrill satty cost me 25c; the Moneymaker Mystery Bounty to day 1 was free, and got me to day 2.

Mango N00b

I bought two mangos (also mangoes) a few days ago on a whim after realizing that I've never had them outside of a heavily processed fruit salad.

You can see where I tried to just take a bite out of one, as if it were a pear. Yes, I'm a mango n00b.

I had to Google how to eat a mango. The skin is way too tough; you have to cut it or peel it. Also, apparently these are not ripe; although some variants are ripe with green skin, most need to have yellow or orange skin. I haven't yet figured out which variant I own.

Ripe ones are supposed to be "a little soft within their skin," and what does that mean when I have no comparison vs a little hard within their skin?

I will update the mango journey if anyone cares.

I'm an idiot immigrant, I don't really know how to peel them either, but you can buy them ready dried or fresh in Asia everywhere, I can send you images when I get to it. Yes, the edible part is orange and very sweet. As for softness they are not a banana but they are fairly easy to eat, some consistency but won't take you long, in dried form it takes a bit longer to digest. You can also make a juice, many peoples favorite, I believe just the crushed/grinded fruit and water. I think in India they are considered the king of fruits, disrepecting them is offensive.

It's just like an american pear. It needs to give when you push it.

You can peel them with a potato peeler. I use a paring knife. Then I just slice pieces off and eat them with the juice dribbling down my beard, or pop them into the blender for smoothies.

The core is tough and not eaten.

put em on ice cream

Mango juice is one of my favorites! Now if you want to really explore and get creative the mango potential, a mango-fennel seed dressing (and fresh herbs with lemon juice and whatnot) for a summer spinach goat cheese salad is the way to go

Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemen! I can't find my damn peeler, so I'll have to pick one up on my next shopping trip. I suppose I could just cut them and eat them like melons, but my nice knife set fell by the wayside during my last move, so I'll get a peeler.

The movie Gothic is next on my media bucket list. And it just hit me that it was a favorite of another old girlfriend of mine, and just like What About Bob, I couldn't be arsed to watch it in spite of fervent reccomendations.

And this girl was cool; she watched Hellraiser with me without a peep, or even a wry look. I had seen Hellraiser II first, and had liked it a lot. So I figured that the original must have been better than the sequel, but it wasn't. The sequel is much better in this case.

One more great remix I'd forgotten about...

Lo these many years I awaited an extended dance version of Man Of Constant Sorrow.

A+

I have to brush up on some Caesar Chavez, and I like your meet cute story; death and hell in the movies, life and life in life.

I finished Gothic last night, and it was a hell of a wild ride. Is it a good movie? I would mark it more as a startling and spectacular failure, like a space shuttle disaster, but one where no one real was hurt, at least physically.

There are five principle actors, and all 5 of them chew through their roles in every scene without relenting; so that must have been exactly how director Ken Russell (Tommy, Altered States) wanted it. It's exhausting, but the film comes in under 90 minutes, so the constant hysterical mayhem is endurable.

Gabriel Byrne (Miller's Crossing, The Usual Suspects) plays pansexual sociopath artiste Lord Byron, and Julian Sands (Warlock, Naked Lunch) is his best friend, Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who brings his mistress Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (later Mary Shelley), played by Natasha Richardson (Patty Hearst) to Byron's gothic estate. Along with them comes Mary's stepsister Claire Clairmont, one of Byron's many lovers, including his personal physician Dr. Polidori, who is living with Byron.

The five of them proceed to spend a drunk, heavily-opiated night alternating between screwing and nearly killing each other, and they also seem to create a destructive supernatural presence that terrifies them all night, alone or in groups...or it may be that they were just really, really high.

From this vengeful creation (or mass imaginary figment), Mary Shelley gets the idea to write the great novel Frankenstein in 1818.

Gothic was a little too hysterical (in the old sense of the word) and over the top for me to recommend it, but it was never boring, and I had some fun watching it.

I've been sick the past 3 days, and all the phlegm in my lungs has been blocking a few small passages and producing eerie noises whenever lay down and exhale, so in the light of that distraction I haven't been able to get to sleep much.

I peeled a mango yesterday, and cut myself with the peeler—it's been a long time since I've last done that job, having never been in the military, and I generally eat potatoes with the skins on.

The mango was delicious. The pit inside is about the size and shape of an excellent skipping rock, so I may have had trouble trying to cut the fruit into melon-like sections; peeling seems to be the way.

After I had a few bites of the mango, I absentmindedly put my wounded finger in my mouth, and from that I was able to gauge the citric acid level of the fruit: moderate to high.

I remember 3 decades ago when food importation wasn't at the extensive level that we have come to know in Europe and Americas where just about every product can be found in most grocery stores and hence several items were very foreign to me. Like avocados. Mangos. Hell even sushi, that I tried for the first time 29 years ago and initially found weird - when nowadays it would be my go-to food every single night 🙄 One was limited to his own gastronomical culture at the time, unless he set out to travel, of course.

When I first set foot in English Canada/away from the French gastronomical culture, a couple of distinctions shocked : the lack of cheese options in grocery stores (like about 8-10 at the time and mostly mozzarella, basic Swiss cheese and cheddar (without barely choices of even aged cheddar!!!) and the lack of coffee shops!!! Since then, the diversification of cheeses can be found even in small towns and Starbucks at least gives you a cafe option.

Wait, you're using a peeler on a mango?

Funny about mangoes. I grew up never eating mangoes in western NY. When I moved to Texas they had imported cheap Mexico mangoes, plus my wife buying them I started eating mangoes all the time. My kid also loves them.

Sorry I’m late to the party. I’ve peeled mangoes but found it way more difficult than cutting them this way which I’ve been doing for over 10 years.

Yeah there's a lot of exotic (to us) fruit in our supermarkets, and most of it is not terribly expensive.

I've often been tempted to buy some of it, so I just pulled the trigger on the last trip. I may get something different the next time. None of that durian chit; though, I don't want the neighbors calling the authorities.

Wait, you're using a peeler on a mango?

The skin was really tough. Maybe due to it not being ripe when I bit into it? Do you eat them with the skin on?

The YouTube algorithm has been letting me down, lately: a lot of repeats of stuff I didn't want to watch the first time they put it on my list. I'm starting to wonder if they're mad about my adbl***er.

As far as mango souls go: mangos are dead. If you believe in monads, then I would venture that they have a standard inanimate object soul filled with dull intransigence and resistance to having their physical form being manipulated by an untalented n00b like me.

Unless you have a natural talent for something, you have to suck at it first before you can get good.

I had trouble with the pit, obviously. It makes a giant divot in the fruit. But I notice that the YouTube guy didn't show what he did with his pit-side half. I peeled mine.

He visits my town once a year.
He fills my mouth with kisses and nectar.
I spend all my money on him.
Who, girl, your man?
No, a mango.

My dad patiently tried to teach me basic small and medium-sized vehicle maintenance and repair, and I spent the time in every lesson mentally squirming, instead of learning. I'm lucky to have YouTube when I need to do something basic with my Jeep.

Yup, I feel you bro : I wish I had paid attention also when my dad taught me a bunch of manual stuff (he comes from a family that all worked in construction) back in the day... It would certainly be helpful nowadays!!! Thankfully though, he is still around And I now pay attention 😉
