Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
thing about star wars is the magic of the original trilogy is completely lost if you watch it for the first time as an adult
and while the prequels are quite cheesy at times, they hold up as decent popcorn action films
would definitely say watch them from 1-6 that way the prequels are less fan service and more unspoiled and then feel free to stop completely or just treat everything after as a parallel universe
Always in release order. Watching chronologically would spoil the biggest twist in the franchise.
Loved him in Igby Goes Down, which is generally underrated. I guess it’s been like 20 years so I should probably rewatch since I own it.
He’s good in a few Wes Anderson movies too. And Portlandia.

There's also something that doesn't feel quite right about watching movies that were made in the 2000s and then jumping back to 1977.

IMO watch the first one, preferably on an original VHS tape, then get on with the rest of your life.

The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008)
Interesting and quite well directed docudrama account of the loopy escapades of the 70s terrorist group, from the director of Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989) & Christiane F (1981), it charts their rise in the late 60s/early 70s, to their eventual imprisonment. The trailer comes across as glorifying them, but the film itself is actually a rather grimy and unflinching account.
The Passenger (2023)
A meek, bullied fast food employee becomes the unwitting passenger of his addled co-worker who goes on a killing spree, in this surprisingly meandering and somewhat uneventful road film that comes across more as a drama than a thriller, despite sporadic bouts of brutality. Considering its premise, I would have preferred something more exploitative actually.

Undemanding but passable Belgian splatter flick regarding a zombie outbreak at an Eastern European cosmetic surgery clinic
I really liked Baader Meinhof but it might drag for a lot of people. Last Exit To Brooklyn & especially Christiane F are fantastic though you need the original unedited undubbed version of the latter obviously.

I saw Christiane F years ago in German with subtitles and found it quite good. I don't know if it was censored or not though. Last Exit to Brooklyn is indeed great, although not a film I'm in a hurry to revisit any time soon. I agree that Baader could have been a bit tighter.
Sing Sing - Wow wow wow. I've always appreciated Colman Domingo. The choices he makes in this film are brave and so bloody naked. There's a bit where he's telling the parole board about his theater group. He's so proud and beaming, until one of the board members asks if his parole hearing is a performance for him. Watched this a few nights ago. It is streaming on Max for those interested. Really good movie that should have been a Best Picture nominee.
If you like Sing Sing, check out Ghostlight. Similar movie in that the theater is the backdrop, but I thought Ghostlight was the better movie and the best movie of the year.

One of Kurosawa's best. I appreciate how directors can work in confined spaces, the way Kurosawa does in the first part of the film.

I have to admit, I had never seen this prior to making this blind buy... and I am so glad I did because it is an amazing Film Work.
Confined spaces is one of my personal favorite Film structures, Hateful Eight... Reservoir Dogs... Snow Trail and Runaway Train(Written by Kurosawa)... 12 Angry Men... and so on.
Watching this Film, I did take note of two opportunities for further story depth that were ignored by Kurosawa.
I felt that if the master kidnapper had been in some way related to the chauffeur, it would have added a level of hitchcockian intrigue to the story because it would have moved the father of the kidnapped boy further forward in the story and given him ammunition for beiung torn between the love of his son and the Japanese Heritage of the sense of duty to his employer and honor... and it would have answered a nagging question on how the kidnapper would have possibly known about the timing of the 30 million yen being available from our main character/Mifune.
I also feel that in desperation if the kidnapper, as a medical practitioner, had done the crime in order to gain funding to try and help mitigate the suffering of those souls that were wrapped in the effects of unending addiction would have added yet another layer of significant emotional weight to the story.
Jim Jarmusch suffers from the same problem... Life Imitates Art.

A lot of Jarmush's work is just so masterful and revelatory. Just an astounding filmmaker. He's what people claim Spike Lee is. Lee has made maybe one truly greet film. Jarmusch has made at least 5.

I have fairly limited exposure to Jarmush's films. Wife and I enjoy watching Only Lovers Left Alive on Valentine's Day. It's one of our favorite romantic, sexy films. It may be the biggest influence on why we finally picked up a turntable last year.
