Bump

Im happy to dive in with the definitely legal p4?

Please do

Pyro

Probably just fire

pyro/pyromania/pyromaniac

L4 lava
B4 burn

No B7 brigade though

I have the same thought, except that I bet pyro means fire in latin or greek.

Yeah it's Greek

L5/L7 light/lighter
P5 place

You can bold fire if you like, maybe fire brigade is a UK thing

fire

Yes

The root is Greek, but I couldn’t find anywhere that the word/prefix “pyro” is Greek for “fire,” otherwise I would’ve fought for it being illegal.

Pyro

Let’s not capitalize clues that don’t need capitalizing.

I was going for Pyro the xmen character

lol...says this and then jumps in with the exact word we were debating if legal or not

The Greek word is πῦρ (pŷr), with the genitive form πυρός (pyros).

to me, saying pyro for fire is like saying agua for water

if we don't allow agua, shouldn't allow pyro

it is a little bit iffy because the main word is pyr, not pyro, but pyros is the genitive form and pyr seems close enough anyway that we shouldn't be cluing it if foreign words aren't allowed

Round 9:

Cards used: 10
Guessers: pog/insanity

The Board:

B | A | RG | C | IH | UNKQ | DL

The target word:
I've pmed it to amazingervin, ibedrummin, doctor zeus, bolt2112 and d1iabol1cal

b3 is decent but maybe shadowfax?

d4 is a good confirmer but takes them down wrong path as a clue

don't have a banger yet

k8 seems pretty good if we end up needing 2
n6 also; may not know it but can deduce what we were really going for if clued

Yeah, looking into it more I agree that it’s too close and shouldn’t be allowed in the future.

What about something like pyre? That was my initial p4. It’s the same root, but it doesn’t directly translate to fire.

I think aqua for water should be OK. Similar to pyro, it's used so often, in so many words, there are characters like DZ's actual literal clue. Like yea it's close and easy but sometimes you have a banger letter available. Something like Rojo for Red I'd say no, but this seems different

there's a l8 which is a similar idea to the k8, i'm sure there's some more stuff with the letters we have available - just thought of b10 when typing next thing

there's a B9 which...if you know you know, but could also shadowfax hard lol

i think l8 is probably fine and they can figure out what it is even if they don't immediately know

We should target k8

B9 is a really good one...thats very shadowfaxy

agua, not aqua

the spanish word for water

agua, not aqua

the spanish word for water

Also, aqua is Latin for water.

Agua I vote no cause it's basically just only a translation from another language

Aqua I vote yes since it's a root for a million words, aquatic, aquamarine, aquarium etc, is more than just a translation, and is even a legendary band!

I like Erv’s stance here. Because so many words come from Greek and Latin, maybe it’s okay for us to loosen up. We just shouldn’t abuse it - and I think we’re all reasonable and smart enough to know when it crosses the line into intellectual dishonest. There are words that have entered the common lexicon, whereas words like agua that are just the Spanish word for water should clearly be illegal.

English speakers who use “pyro-“ as a prefix aren’t actively thinking “this comes from the Greek word πῦρ (pŷr).” We don’t say “fire enthusiast,” we say “pyromaniac,” (which is a compound word containing both Greek and Latin words). When someone decides to call water “agua” instead of “water,” they know they’re using a Spanish word.

For example, a long time ago D1iab clued “one-horned” to get the target unicorn (it was the shadowfax round!). Unicorn literally means “one-horned,” but no one objected because no one thinks about the literal translation of unicorn when talking about it. Not so with words like agua or apfel (the codenames example).
