The "LOLCANADA" thread...again

So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

why did Carney come straight out poking the bear?

that isn't the tact you want to take w DJT, no?

All parties in Canada (but for the PPC who endlessly sucks up to Trump) have strongly criticized Trump for launching economic warfare against Canada. That makes sense as Canadians are rightfully angry. Doug Ford just got a sweeping majority off the back of similar comments. His comments are just a reflection of reality and Canadian sentiment.

all of this makes sense in a vacuum

however, back in the real world Canadians should be alarmed w this posture. now i'll grant you that there's a fine line bt your own countries interest and being pushed around

all that said, it's potentially very reckless -- depending on the timing and if/how far the USA slips into autocracy. history informs us that an autocrat eventually needs a war early on. i wouldn't mindlessly train the crosshairs on my country if i were a CAN politician

Because Canadians and majority of their politicians are idiots. Politicians want to stay in power, rather than admit they made mistakes to put Canada in the position where a stroke of the pen can destroy the entire economy. They just act hysterical and scream Trump bad, while stupid Canadian voters lap it up like the sheep that they are.

lol buddy Canada is always going to be highly highly economically (and politically/socially/culturally/militarily) linked to the US because of basic geography and history etc. A complete madman taking over the US and enacting insane 25% across the board tariffs was always going to be very damaging. The kind of minor bandaids like oh we should standardize first aid kits requirements to have more interprovincial trade BS it's like fine, do that, do all of that, drill baby drill and pipe it whereever you want, it is STILL going to be super painful. This idea that the problem was just the last 100 years of politicians of all stripes building an economy integrated with the US is ridiculous.

mirror mirror on the wall, whose the stupidest of them all?

Shifty, it's pretty obvious from your posts that you belong to a wing of Canada that has been pushing for more US market integration and tearing down economic and regulatory barriers for years. That would truly have put Canada in a place where we are fully at the mercy of US actors. Saying everyone is an idiot without having once demonstrated an ounce of knowledge or insight yourself is a strange disease.

That is entirely false. I think Shifty is on the side of having more options for getting our resources to market. The current liberals have passed bills to hinder that .

The current liberal leadership election had candidates copying the conservative policies

The current liberal government has done nothing to remove provincial trade barriers or do anything other than impose tariffs.

I think Trudeau being gone can help Canada as Trump rightfully hated the man

The funny thing is that I work in this space and the federal government has been going after provincial trade barriers the entire time. A lot of sources of hate that gets directed at the federal government here belongs to provincial and even municipal levels of government. The provincial fiefdoms and municipal NIMBYism are constant barriers to national policies. A ton of the goverment criticism and hate I see is misdirected federally.

I was surprised that Carney came out as aggressive as he did. Sure, he can say all the rights things about tariffs remaining, acting in the best interests of Canada, not backing down, etc. But I did expect to hear at least a hint of an objective to foster a different type of dialogue and relationship with Trump, without overtly throwing Trudeau under the bus. He could have framed it as chance to start a new dialogue, if Trump is receptive .

I think if Trump wants to backtrack on certain things then giving him a "I think I can work with this new Canadian leader" would give Trump an out. I thought Carney would signal that tone.

Sometimes punching the bully works, but sometimes the bully is just too unpredictable to chance it. We have already seen Trump harm his own people in order to punish others.. He'd have no problem smacking Canada hard and then thinking or worrying about the ramifications in the US later.

Shifty has also repeated all the trump talking points about canadian banking, about canadian telecoms, canadian dairy, canadian public news media, etc. Him and the PPC folks are 100% aligned with complete free market reregulation so that american corporations can come into canada and dominate every major sector of our company.

That's the "free market" approach. And like...sure...fine....ok....whatever. But now the Trumpkins have gone further. They don't want a free market. They want an asymetrical free market where you can put on massive crippling tariffs against Canada to cripple Canadian companies AND demand completely deregulation so American companies can take over Canadian market share.

Liberals get my vote in the next election. Thank God almighty Freeland was no where close to being elected, faith in humanity restored.

Scrapping the increase in capital gains tax for good was such a needed thing for Canada.

The Liberals erased a 25 point conservative lead by talking tough on Trump, Ford just swept a massive majority in Ontario. Now even Poilievre and Smith are copying the rhetoric. The polls are overwhelmingly clear. There isn't a political strategist in the world who would advocate for sucking up to Trump now. And that is even assuming the Trump-ology is right and somehow it was possible to get him to back down with sucking up to him or whatever.

I don't understand Freeland.

She thought that she would be popular with the liberals / Canada in general because she "et tu, Brute" the unpopular Trudeau?

She didn't realize Canadians equally loathed her, and only applauded her bringing down Trudeau because we hated his leadership. But once that Trudeau was gone, we packed her bags for her and drove her to the airport ourselves.

So glad Canadians sent her down with Trudeau with a landslide vote for Carney.

Ya that was definitely a pretty big misread. And like, set aside regular voters. She could barely get anyone in cabinet to even endorse her, they all went Carney. Even what we gather are genuine friends like anita anand.

So over a year ago I noted that Poilievre never tells us about what kind of tax cut (if any?) he plans to do. Cut GST? Income tax? Corporate tax cuts? What? There were a few things we got like the carbon tax cut (revenue neutral), the GST on new homes (Revenue neutral when cancelling housing accelerator fund) and at the end the capital gain tax reversal.

A year later we are getting messaging for "Pass a Bring it Home Tax Cut on work, investment, homebuilding, energy and making stuff in Canada.".

But wtf is the "Bring it Home Tax Cut"? Like he is saying it all the time. But wtf is it? Is it just those previous policies? Is it something new? Like how ****ing hard is it to tell us the most basic details of the plan you've been working on for a year?

If I could have 1 bingo card for 2025 is a Liberal victory in the next election and Carney as our next PM for 5 years instead of a few months.

I wonder if Carney's credentials plus the anti-Trump factor will be enough. The more Trump attacks the Liberals and Canadians see Liberals fight back, the more support Liberals get.

Was not suggesting wavering or sucking up. Not sure how you got sucking up out of my post.

Trump hates Trudeau, and it is personal. I suggested that as a new leader, Carney could hint at a chance for new dialogue. Not a hint at concessions or Canada rolling over or Canada showing any weakness whatsoever.

This to me seems way better than giving Trump no opening to backtrack if he wants to, and then for us to be the spite victim of his next stupid idea.

And BTW, as we all know, there are lots of ways Carney can have signals sent to Trump by proxies that Carney is expected to be very tough, but also sees hope for renewed and productive discussions.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is exactly what he is planning. So I have zero issues with his acceptance speech repeating the general tough guy fighting back mantra that is clearly resonating politically and if I was his political advisor I'd advise him to do exactly that just as Jenni is presumably advised Poilievre to do the same. That isn't the same thing as signally complete obstinance and unwillingness to work together, but as you suggest those signals are the type of thing you might say in say your first phone call or whatever.

Not arguing that, I blamed all politicians not just federal. The fact that a province like Quebec can block a pipeline east which helps the country is wrong. I also believe if the federal government wants to they have levers to pull that can force provinces to do what they want. But politically that is not ideal and since politicians care about staying in power not what is best for the country that never happens.

Been trying explain that to lozen for a long time shrug .
And now he would like the federal to have more power to have even less power for provinces which go directly against Alberta principles….

Go figure .

U are 100%?right for shifty

Nah , you believe all Alberta interest is good for Canada which it isn’t ….
Alberta -> 12.5% population of Canada ….

Next round general election .

Can we just pause for a moment and give Trudeau some massive props for the Canada Free Trade Agreement and actually getting those thorny negotiations done and signed? THat fixed the biggest set of federal problems. It isn't perfect, but it sure helped prepare us for this moment.

NFK that provinces set their own trade barriers but the Federal Government can put pressure on provinces as well. We all know the biggest culprit is the welfare province of Quebec and BC is the other.

Freeland negotiated that for Justin and its basically the same deal
