President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump

I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?

So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at

Correct, which is yet even more evidence that the USA is finished.

Half of the country does not believe in the rule of law and thinks their OrangeGod can not only do no wrong, but can do whatever he wants.

Trump supporters voted for the end of America, and they’re getting it. Well done. Your parents would be so proud.

They believe in the rule of law , just the law they like and apply to the people they don’t like .
True American justice !

I never understood the presidential pardon thing. Surely the houses should be the one that can pardon, and only under miscarriages of justice. OR maybe only the judiciary should do that, not sure.

NOT the president.

It’s a check on the judiciary and on congress at the same time. Congress makes laws so if there’s a law the president finds unjust they can pardon the people who were found to be breaking it. If the judiciary has a rogue federal judge or the supreme court declines to hear an appeal for some reason the president can remedy that.

Most of the time the answer is going to be checks and balances.

It doesn't seem very balanced if the president could decide to pardon every single person charged with a federal crime.

NOT the president.

It comes from the historical right of the kings of England to pardon convicted criminals.

The revolutionary leaders in the US seemed to not want anyone to have royal powers, but they decided to give this one to the president for... Reasons?

There are plenty of times when the justice system just flat malfunctions and there's no way to correct it without an executive pardon.

Isn’t their crime that are both belonging to states and federal jurisdictions simultaneously ?
So they could escape a federal conviction but not a state conviction ?

It's so hard to think of anything that could go badly wrong with a system where absolute power of amnesty is invested in just one person.

there’s another check which is impeachment, which is a check on the president’s power.

there’s no one “check” in our system.

Got to hand it to Trump really. He's driven such a juggernaut through your laughable "checks and balances" that the only checks now are people paying him for favours and the only balances that matter are his bank accounts'.

It is possible that one can be of the opinion that almost everything appalling that Trump may do no longer is to fill a need for a much larger bank balance, without having to raise your opinion of the man in general.

The last President gave out pre-emptive pardons for family members for crimes they had committed they hadn't been charged for yet. Hard to beat that.

Are you at all familiar with Donald Trump? Stay tuned.

In its short history the US has actually had periods where the Executive assumed as much power as Trump. Eisenhower and Jackson two examples off the top of my head. The really unprecedented thing we are going through, where it is unknown whether the system can survive, is judicial activism to block democratic processes that judges dont agree with.

NOT the president.

Well, it's clear that Trump is going to hand out blanket pre-emptive pardons on his last day. This will likely force a look at changing the presidential pardon power, as any administration can come in and do whatever they want and just pardon everyone on the way out.

by diebitter

Not quite, though, right? It's still illegal, he's just immune from prosecution.

He's not immune from being charged with breaking international law though. (I realise in reality that will never happen, unless he starts a big enough war though)

That's my understanding.

The Trump administration said he was allowed to come to the US by Biden after the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Not that I believe much that comes from them, but it seems like it would be hard to officially backdate his arrival and if no records were changed then it should be very easy to show they're lying.

Biden gave a two-year temporary parole status to Afgans who assisted the US during the war, at which point they could apply for asylum, extension of the two years, or apply for visas. He came in the country in 2021 and applied for asylum in 2024 and was granted asylum in April of 2025 under the Trump administration.

Number one, there are plenty of things checking him right now. Of course he is doing damage to the system as I said every day before the election if you look at my post.

Number two, aren’t you one of the morons that said “hurr durr voting for camel-a is evul because of muh israeli genocideeee” despite all the evidence Trump would be a disaster?

What a moronic statement. Look at the people he didn’t give pardons to, like Comey and Leticia James.

Huh? Bro what the hell are you actually talking about? You realize all of the “judicial activism” can be overturned by the legion of idiot judges that Trump has appointed on the SC and in the appellate courts, right? So if there’s system is being ruined by activist judges, it’s Trump’s own judges ruining it.

Absolute dogshit post.

It is not, governors also have the right to pardon state convictions.

Donald Trump is ******ed.

The problem is I don’t think the damages are over .
It can get even much worse .

It’s almost a guarantee that the worst is yet to come, and it has already been horrible.

Of course it's going to get much worse. ICE will get more and more like... you know.... and we'll start the see the SC doing Trump's bidding when the various appeals etc etc get that far up.

You guys have a Russian asset with massive powers who is both corrupt and puppeteered by, basically, evil people.

The dems need to start lining up whatever they have to line up to clearly win the presidency back, and then reverse as much of this damage as possible, make sure the people that orchestrated this pay as much as possible, and put in proper controls to stop a bad faith actor ever getting in the WH again.

The best hope in the short term the USA has is that his senility becomes so obvious it can no longer be papered over, but long term, the dems need to get the presidency back, otherwise the USA is mostly done as a country other than as a friend of tyrants and fascists.

The other option is the Mussolini solution, of course.

I have no idea what you guys do about the endemic idiocy and educational shortfalls built into your system though. How do you solve a problem like MAGA?

It’s pretty pointless to worry about the presidency in 2028 when we still have midterms, and congress can be efficacious in stopping the president’s agenda.
