Anti-virus is basically adware/spyware. But then again so is Windows.
If you still want the granular control over your internet traffic of an anti-virus you can use a custom DNS resolver. I use
. The free account is fine for most people and it allows you to block specific things that look suspicious. There's preconfigured settings to block ads, trackers, sketchy domains, etc. It works on any device with any OS.
It’s a learning experience. I was modifying and building my own PCs at age 12, mostly by trial and error. Installing my first internal CD burner was eye opening.
If he somehow bricks it up, he can learn how to reformat the hard drive. This also teaches the importance of backups.
