Best/Worst Poker Movies.

Best/Worst Poker Movies.

I just read in Bluff magazine ranking poker movies. Ofcourse Rounders is #1.One the bottom end of the list was some pretty bad ones.I've never seen the Stu Unger movie, but I did see what I thought was so bad it even felt insulting to serious poker players : "All in".Yet this wast of time of a movie was completely left out of the list. What's the deal? Deal was pretty horrible too. Was I the only unfortunate sucker to watch "All in"?

I recently came across a blog listing some of the most authentic and entertaining poker movies, and I couldn’t agree more. Lucky You (2007), Casino Royale (2006), Shade (2003), and California Split (1974) each capture the thrill and psychology of the game in their own way. After watching a couple of them myself, I can confirm they’re absolute must-sees for anyone who loves poker films.

It’s a great way to see how GTO thinking applies to what happens on screen.

Casino Royale is one of the least authentic poker movies ever to be made. I'm a fan of James Bond films, and I liked Daniel Craig fine, but while many people seem to think that was the best of Craig's run, I found it to be the worst because the poker scenes were so bad.

The Grand is fun

Yeah, I watched All In too, honestly, it was pretty bad. They really missed the real feel of poker in that one.

Anyone who hasn't seen A Big Hand for a Little Lady needs to watch it...it's not only the best poker movie, but the best movie mentioned after The Sting...which has the best poker scene in movie history.

A couple of the rules are weird...but seem to be historically accurate (Western Rules).

And who didn't have a crush on Woodward after watching that film!

FWIW...though I'm old, I didn't see the movie till I was at least 40.

Does this refer to no table stakes rule?

There's really no way any poker game could work like that. The richest player would just win every hand.

And there's absolutely no way any poker game is going to be held up for hours or days for someone to go around borrowing money.

This is my first post, sorry if this is disjointed from the rest of the discussion.

I really enjoyed Molly's Game and a weird one from the 70s called California Split withe Elliot Gould. Rounders is a classic, purely for AC nostalgia but I also enjoy the roles everyone played in that one, really looked like a fun film to be a part of. High Roller with Imperioli was bad, but it was that Miramax/New Line Cinema/Sony Picture Classics-era of the 00s where they were giving every indie filmmaker money, which made it amateurish but also excusable for its low quality. The Maverick movie with Mel Gibson is also a classic, but thats silly and the poker aspects aren't great but the story was fun enough to make up for it.

The last movie about poker/gambling that was so frustratingly bad it left an impression on me was The Card Counter with Oscar Isaac and Wilem Dafoe. Not my cup of tea.

I liked Molly's Game.
I found it quite realistic.

I just watched the Cincinatti Kid for the first time, way better than Rounders.

Didn't it show someone folding the nuts?

Spoiler
Show

Yes in one scene dude folds the nuts to a raise on the river. He got totally confused because a famous actor was talking to him. I can imagine something like that happening.

+1 for mollys game

Both are my favorites but it's close. So close. Not sure if Teddy KGB is the difference.

i watched that movie with the Sopranos actor on Stu Ungar. That wasn't good. He didn't fit the role at all, as a character. And it just isn't good. i wanted it to be.
