Scott Matusow and Mike on occasion
Mike is known to have "borrowed" from Daniel
Why wasn’t the UB scandal mentioned in the documentary? I’ve heard, it destroyed Mike’s confidence and game. Although it’s also pretty clear that drugs played a big role in Mike’s downfall
Doesn't really have a HoF case if you just look at the poker achievements. The books I've read suggest that even at his peak he wasn't playing in the biggest cash games, but was instead more of an upper-middle stakes reg. Countless tournament players have achieved more. Danny Alaei won more bracelets in a decade of grinding poker than Matusow has in 25 years. Younger players ar
Not really. Posting threads are pretty dead in general. Some older guys like me posting in a relatively dead format doesn't really mean he's super well known these days.
Everyone who plays poker still knows who Moneymaker is. As another poster said Mike just has the trainwreck effect.
Mike had a few year run where he was pretty famous. That's it. At least Moneymaker is a great ambasador for poker. What's Mike ever really done for the game? Maybe brought in some views 20 years ago? Has he brought even one new player to the game since 2010? If anything he's probably turned people off from playing.
Now if they actually put in 4-5 guys a year you could make a case for him but until they do there are so many people who deserve it over him.
Mike and Tom could take half the HOF each.
Or they could be the famous players never getting in.
A win either way, and we thread people know it!
Too many great players turning 40 and only one spot a year. Don't think he has any chance.
Same song and dance every year. This is the year he's going to crush, this is the year he quiets all the haters etc. etc.
go mike!
Watched the documentary last night randomly and it's pretty sad. He clearly went through both physical and mental health challenges, some self inflicted, others not. I preferred his book to be honest, and the structure of the documentary was all over the place, bouncing back and forth in time in a non cohesive way.
For the PHOF, I will start with the disclaimer that I consider the whole PHOF to be an irrelevant joke until Isai Scheinberg is in, and every poker player voting for it should be embarrassed to vote for anyone but him. That said - I consider Matusow a HOFer. Was he a product of his time who struggles to compete, sure. But in the 2000-2010 range, he was (no matter what you might feel about it) an integral part of the poker boom, and had enough success during that time to earn it.
When Mike was 40 he had 3 bracelets, a ToC win, 2 ME final tables, and a long record of playing at high stakes and you could have made a decent argument he deserved it then. IMO he's being unfairly evaluated by what's happened to him since then, some of which weren't completely his fault.

This is actually a great point. A lot of the people who are now touted as "must includes" when they are hitting 40 have a few bracelets more than Mike at 40, sure. But theres also been 10 times as many bracelets to win in the 40 years they have lived compared to when Mike was 40.
If Mike isnt included because "theres a lot of guys hitting 40 now who are better" then surely you need to make an assessment of Mike when he was 40 compared to the field, compared to those guys hitting 40 now. Was Mike as big or bigger of a name in poker in 2008 as the players hitting now? Id argue strong yes. If youre not including Mike then you at least have to wait until these other guys hit 60 to see if they can stand the test of time better than Mike.
Mike should be in. There wasn't a single person playing poker in his heyday that didn't know who he was.
I play a lot of poker and I doubt that the people in my home game have the faintest clue who Josh Arieh or Jeremy Ausmus are. Everybody knew the name Mike Matusow back in the day when he was their age.

of course people gonna remember that piece of dogpoop not paying back his family duh
Mike should be in. There wasn't a single person playing poker in his heyday that didn't know who he was.
But there are tons playing now who don't have a clue.
Not many top players fell off as hard as he did so young.
I have a feeling these 40 year olds people are talking about in great shape who study the game will age poker wise a lot better than a degenerate junkie.
None of those players are as entertaining as Mike. He made the game entertaining and got people ro want to play. The game has no personality anymore.
No vlogs this year?
4th of 9 in seven card stud $10K.
There is a trend running on X where babies that like celebrities talk about current events and are pretty funny. I don’t have the skills to use AI to portray these conversations.
Perhaps someone here could create some of our favorite poker players saying stuff from this year’s WSOP? Bad beats, talking trash etc? The rail?
That would be comedy gold, IMO.
He's now last of 8. Lost a big pot. Limped split 4s and was raised by split Qs. Was betting his 4s trying to get a fold, but got called down by Qs up.
Sounds like a terrible play
Matusow's board was 4s8s5s7d against QdKcTh7c, so he probably had a draw and was trying to represent a straight or flush, not knowing his opponent really had split Qs, and thought his opponent maybe just had high cards. Matusow had a 4 in the hole and the other card may have given him a flush draw and maybe a better straight draw than what was showing. Probably at least a 4, 6, or spade would have won it for him.
Just saw the Mike documentary. I got the impression that his mom kind of hates him. She said a bunch of times that he will never make it in the WSOP hall of fame. She is probably right, but what does she even know about poker?
I felt pretty bad for Mike with his back issues. I was wondering why he was puttering around on that scooter.
I don't know enough about his poker game, but from what I do know, I get the sense that the game has passed him by. He might still be winning mixed games though.
